It definitely felt like spring was in the air today! 🌻

The horses thought so too, dinner time became a race 🐎

In this bunch we have, 1 galloper, 2 trotters and 1 pacer. Who wants to have a go at guessing who is who 🤔

Something a little different for the stables today 🥰

I took 4 of the ponies to a local boys 4yr old birthday party!

It was cowboy themed so of course there had to be ponies there.

Everyone, ponies and children behaved superbly and had a lot of fun, Ash was chief pony ride pony and the others got lots of pats and carrots.

Might have to start a little side hustle 💵💵

Successful day at the trials for me today, also a busy one with 3 horses in! The most I’ve ever had of my own.

First up we had Lily (Poison Ivy), qualifying nicely well under time. Most of you know Lily’s back story and the fact she is now a qualified racehorse is a huge deal! She has been trouble from the day she was born 🙄.

Second we had Abbey (Abbeyrules), she is a new comer to my stable, and originally I thought I’d just use her as the galloping pacemaker but she’s been working well so thought I’d take her along, I also haven’t been using hopples on her but unfortunately that was costly today as she galloped while sprinting but was travelling nicely before then.

And lucky last we have Emma (Ruthless Emma), she’s pretty special being Lizzie’s little sister. First time off the place and she didn’t disappoint, doing everything right and running home really strongly.

Lily will now have a freshen up and then race over summer, the other two girls will keep going and look to qualify in the coming weeks.

Exciting times!

From L-R : Emma, Lily and Abbey :)

So after sharing the great news about one of the chestnuts in my life, I thought I better share the not so great news about the other one 😓

Unfortunately after his last race Beeps suffered an injury to his suspensory ligament (same as Lizzie) which means an end to his racing career as well.

Disappointed is an understatement, I felt like I had finally gotten him worked out and was looking forward to the racing we were going to do over the coming season!

The vet did find signs of an old injury to the ligament so the chance of him doing it again was high.

Sadly there will be no future as a broodmare for him 😅 so hopefully once he has healed someone will fall in love with his quirkiness and offer him a home as a hack!

It feels like I have been waiting forever for an answer but now I finally got the answer I wanted……Lizzie will officially be joining my broodmare team!!

I wish we could be back out on the racetrack together but having her staying with me and knowing I get to train her babies in the future is the next best thing.

I’m so over the moon and feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Now for the fun job of choosing a stallion!!

Another good run by Beeps today in trying conditions again!

Oh the joys of winter racing 🌧️🌧️

He had a nice trip until unfortunately we got pushed 3 wide down the back but he still stuck on for 5th.

Grit racing may not be his forte (much prefers the grass) but he loves what he does and he tries his hardest!

Onto next Sunday and hopefully we might actually get some sunshine to race in!!

One of my best friends Courtney and her horse Rocky need your help!

Courtney lost her horse and best friend Poppy not long ago. She wanted to give her love to another horse so bought Rocky . Rocky has had four years in a paddock untouched and uncared for so Courtney in a way saved him when she bought him. After four years with no care unfortunately he needs surgery for a tooth removal that's going to cost alot! Rocky deserves a chance at a happy pain-free life so we are doing everything we can to help that come true for him and for Courtney.

Please help Rocky!

I don’t normally post stuff like this but I’m quite pleased and thought I’d share it with you all!

Not all of you know but I actually do all the shoeing of my horses myself, I learnt about 6 years ago and I really enjoy it.

It’s bloody hard work and I still have so much to learn but I think I improve all the time.

This is a before and after photo of a new horse I got, I managed to get her down a shoe size and tidied up the angles quite nicely.

Really happy with the end results!

Also this is not a dig at her last farrier, everyone has different ideas and ways of shoeing, I prefer mine to have a shorter toe.

The 5 faces of the babies I have in for handling at the moment 🤗

All 5 of these are trotters, with 4 of them by Royal Aspirations!

1 is by new season sire Habibi Inta. Can you guess which one she is? (Hint, she is a madam!)

I still have spaces available if anyone is still looking for someone to wean their foals, don’t hesitate to send me a message 🤗

A super run by Beeps today at Addington!!

Getting stuck 3 wide for the trip and only narrowly beaten for 3rd.

He has been racing without much luck lately but fingers crossed that will change soon !

Off to the final grass meeting for the season on Sunday 14th, at one of my favourite tracks, Methven 🤗

Time to think about weaning your foal/s!!

Not sure where to go, don’t have time to do it yourself?
Let me help you, I have space available for weaning.

It’s my favourite part of my job.
Years of experience, I take a slow gentle approach with the foals and understand they are all different and advance at different stages.

Competitive prices. Can also offer grazing for the mare once baby has been taken off her.

All foals are hard fed while in the boxes, and get unlimited balage.

Located in Leeston, Canterbury.

Don’t hesitate to message if you have any questions and to hear my prices 😃

We have made the journey over to the West Coast for the weekend!

I was planning this trip for Lizzie but that plan didn’t work so I bought a different chestnut !

8yr old gelding Beeps joined the stable a few weeks ago, he had a race at Ashburton a couple of weeks ago where he ran a nice 6th.

He hasn’t got the best draw for today unfortunately but with any luck we should be running on well at the finish.

I have also picked up two more drives in the Ladies Teal races. Superfast Gorsey and Ultimate Counsel.

Hopefully might be in for a good weekend!

Photo taken at Ashburton with buddy Moose!

Who Am I?

I started Somerset Racing Stables and Equestrian a couple of years ago when I got the opportunity to train a trotter, I jumped at the chance and I haven’t looked back. While harness racing is my main focus, I used to show a retired standardbred and still have a keen interest in the equestrian side, I just no longer have the time to compete myself. Horses will always be first and foremost for me, I love nothing more than seeing them grown from wobbly foals into beautiful athletes. They really are amazing animals, every day I learn something new from a different horse. I never stop expanding my knowledge and I will never know everything about them because there is just so much to learn. Hope this helps you all to know a bit more about me.
