This seasons end becomes next seasons beginning.

Managed to get around to mulching some fruit tree prunings, which we'll use as mulch where it lays.

Bonus is the tropical vibes from the smell of the fig on this foggy morning.

The doco Six inches of Soil was a great way to have a local conversation about changing food production models.

We're stoked to be involved with the showing of the documentary Six Inches of Soil, supported by and on 1st May.

Farmer Dan will be facilitating a panel of local producers and retailers after the doco for a Q&A with the audience.

It's a great opportunity to learn more about the importance of caring for our soil, and get a wider understanding of the challenges with the "modern" food system.

Daylight savings 2024 update

We're furiously trying to get our final few autumn crops in before temps drop, and pulling out the final summer crops to free up more bed space.

Polycropping working well, especially autumn mix green crop and sunflowers.

Polycropping - delicious w**d management...

We're trialing a few different living mulches for under our longer-term crops (e.g., tomatoes, cucumbers).

One combo that has worked really well is rock melon under a bed of cherry tomatoes.

Rockmelon are a really good w**d suppressant (& dont tend to want to climb as aggressively as other melons), as well as a delicious treat while harvesting!

The downside is they need to be gently trained as they want to stray into paths, so we push the wannabe escapees back into the bed each time we thin our tomato plants.

The rockmelon aren't a prolific crop, but they went down a treat at the last Pirongia market and into vege boxes for the last few weeks.

And did we mention how delicious they are post harvest? 😁
