Recently we approached Northern Southland Junior Rugby and asked if we could support the Rippa and C-grade rugby teams with a player of the day package.
This grade is played by kids from the schools within our service area so was a great way to give back to our community! We are stoked to hear that the kids love their medals, with some still being proudly worn several weeks after receiving them - how good!

Update:
Who remembers our post on the Huntaway named Tonga a couple of weeks ago?
Tonga went home today, back on his feet and on the way to a full recovery (all going well). A great outcome following his initial injury and presentation, well done to all those involved in his recovery!

It was great to be part of the ‘Think Safe Brain’ day jointly held by the Riversdale, Balfour, Otama and Waikaia schools recently. Such a great initiative - full credit to everyone involved in putting this together for the kids in our community.

Meet Tonga: Here he is today enjoying some sun outside with the nurses who made a daisy chain neckless for him whilst he sunbathed and reflected on a tough few days…
Last Friday afternoon Tonga misjudged a jump in the yards and collided head first with the railing. The resulting spinal injury means that Tonga can’t currently walk unassisted, but he is making slow improvements and we have our fingers crossed for a full recovery. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Last week we were lucky enough to have Rebel come for a visit to our Riversdale clinic. Rebel is a 3.5yr old bulldog who had TPLO surgery to repair her cruciate 1.5 years ago, we were all so excited to see her doing so well!

We had the Department of Conservation call in to our Te Anau clinic today for a visit with a Southern Brown Kiwi!

(Can you tell how excited Tash was to demonstrate how you hold a kiwi properly to keep them calm 😆)

This kiwi is now over a year old and has been living on Rona island, Manapouri. He is being relocated over to the Haast area now that he is old enough.

Rona Island, area 60 ha, is used as a kiwi “creche” for Haast Southern Brown Kiwi. These kiwi spend up to a year on the island, growing big enough to be able to fight off stoats. They are then transferred back to the Haast tokoeka sanctuary.

KENNEL COUGH

Recently we have seen a few dogs with signs consistent with Kennel Cough. Although not fatal, Kennel Cough can lead to more complicated disease such as pneumonia. It can be an inconvenience with many farmers doing lots of stockwork at this time of year. A run of Kennel Cough through your team can stretch on for a month or longer, with clinical cases often taking weeks to recover and infections staggered.

Kennel Cough is not “one disease”, but the two most common causes are found in the Kennel Cough vaccine. Vaccination is recommended in an outbreak, however, is not recommended for dogs who already have clinical signs. Whole farm/team vaccination is available and strongly recommended, but we do need a few days’ notice to order in stock.

Things to look out for:
- Dry, hacking cough
- Foamy mucous
- Eye/nose discharge
- If your dog becomes lethargic/less hungry, further treatment may be warranted
