Team Phoenix has grown again, we have recently welcomed a new vet and a new nurse to our amazing team. Here's a bit about them both:

Originally from Christchurch, Ju Young graduated Massey University in 2018 and worked for MPI for 4 years. This took her all over New Zealand from Invercargill to Dargaville, with the latest stint in Feilding. After seeing hundreds of thousands of cattle, she decided that cats and dogs and the occasional chicken might be a good shift. She worked in a busy clinic in Tauranga before moving up North to Kerikeri.

She thinks the best part of being a vet is being helpful. Whether that's for your new puppy's vaccination, a prickle in the foot or helping you say goodbye to your beloved pet, she thinks it's a privilege to make a difference.
Ju Young is new to Kerikeri and is keen to explore all that it has to offer. She's already found the baguettes at the Old Packhouse and chocolates at Makana, so it's off to a great start. She firmly believes in balance so she can also be found at Pilates and Yoga classes. You'll also find her walking her 9 year old Pug Honey - Honey loves humans but will bark at all other animals.
Ju Young strives to be a friendly approachable veterinarian and is looking forward to meeting everyone.

Toni is a Northland girl born and raised, having spent most of her life in Kaeo. Ever since she was young Toni knew she wanted to pursue a career in the veterinary industry, and so at the end of 2017 she graduated with a Diploma in Veterinary nursing. Toni is an enthusiastic nurse who is crazy about cats and has a special interest in orthopedic procedures. Outside of work Toni enjoys participating in running events with her mum and collecting indoor plants. Toni also loves fostering kittens and has a special place in her heart for any feline needing a loving temporary home (especially gingers), 3 out of 6 of her personal cats are ginger and white.

Welcome to Team Phoenix, we are excited to have you on board!

Who knew making ham sandwiches could be so dangerous? Talk about freak accident!
If your fur babies are around your feet when you are making your lunch, just don't drop the ham knife...this little poppit jumped in fright when the knife hit the floor and somehow the knife took one of her toes clean off!!! It was a very sharp knife. Luckily a bit of pad was left attached to her foot allowing us to reconstruct the toe, but there will be one less nail to clip on that foot from now on!

This is Leo, he had a very nasty ulcer on his eye that despite treatment was getting deeper and looked like it was going to perforate. We performed a conjunctival pedicle graft, taking a section of the tissue next to the eye and stitching it "carefully" with very fine thread to the eyeball to bring a blood supply to the ulcer and act as a bandage. 6 weeks later and it has all healed up, he will be left with a small scar on the front of his eye but his vision will not be impaired. Leo can get tree climbing again.

Bladder stones are weird things! How do they get there? How do they get so big? Bladder stones form when the acidity of the urine is too high or too low causing crystallisation of minerals from the urine, female dogs can pass small stones but when they get this big they are stuck! Thanks to Donna Doolittle's Animal Rescue for making this surgery possible for Daisy's owners.

This is a particularly impressive case of Epulis, an over growth of the gums that we see mainly in Boxers. Luckily these growths were soft and could be cut away carefully with a fine cautery tool. Left unchecked the epulis will grow over the teeth, collect food and trap infection. The teeth that emerged from under the gums, in this dog, were actually in pretty great condition and now he has MUCH sweeter smelling breath.

Maddie the old Boxer had a problem with her eyes. She has a nasty corneal ulcer on her good eye, but has chronic scarring to the other eye. This means we couldn't use a third eyelid flap to cover the ulcer because she wouldn't be able to see. Luckily we have just imported some canine bandage contact lenses from Australia. These are bigger that a normal contact lens and don't affect eyesight, just protect the eyeball from damage and act as a bandage so the ulcer can heal underneath. This way the ulcer is protected and Maddie can still see. We will leave it in place for a couple of weeks until the ulcer has gone.

Here's Frankie having his first session on our Accell Therapy Mat. He has just had cruciate surgery and is enjoying the relaxation and gentle massage that is provided by this therapy. We now have this service available at Phoenix Animal Wellness which can be used for injuries, arthritis, anxiety, pre and post surgery and much more. Just 20 minutes on the mat can help sooth pain, repair damage and relax tension, and yes of course the staff have had a go too! If you think your pet would benefit from this completely safe and non-invasive treatment, contact our clinic and book a session.

It was The New Zealand Veterinary Conference in Wellington last week. Team Phoenix stepped up so that Practice Principal Paula, Practice Manager Sam and Head Nurse Donna could all attend. It was an awesome experience for learning, networking and bonding as a team. We learnt lots of new clinical skills from bandaging to anaesthetics of pets with heart conditions, we had leadership workshops and discussions on management issues like after hours and vet shortages. It was a great opportunity to see the new products and services available to the profession, so that we can continue to offer our clients and their pets a 'state of the art' service.

This little pig dog, didn't look little when she arrived, she had torn her windpipe and the air was escaping out and under her skin, so she had blown up like a balloon all over. We had to cut a section out of her trachea and join it back together again, pretty tricky as the trachea wants to spring away from you in both directions, once it is cut. You can imagine how weird it feels to wake up from an anaesthetic with a shortened windpipe that has been stitched up. Not fun, but we kept her full of pain relief and mild sedation all night and stayed with her in the clinic to monitor her. It took her a few days to recover and deflate, but she is off home and off pig hunting for a few weeks.

"Chicken" came to see us today for BOAS surgery. Her main issues with this condition were vomiting water and snoring. We could see her nostrils needed enlarging but her soft palate was very long and dangling into her airway. She was put on medication for a few days before the surgery, then positioned to enable good access to the back of the throat. After assessing her palate, special long, curved instruments are used to shorten the soft palate and remove any pr*****ed vocal folds. Chicken is quite young, so her vocal folds were fine, but we removed about 1.5cm of soft palate; quite a lot for a little dog. She recovered in our oxygen cage and has gone home happily this afternoon.

Last week we were lucky to have specialist surgeon, Helen Milner from Milner Consulting come and assist us with some very complex surgeries. These 2 adorable pedigree golden retrievers were born with the congenital abnormality, ectopic ureters. This is when the tiny tube from the kidney to the bladder, misses the bladder and ends up with the pups dribbling urine continually. Of course our amazing local rescues stepped in; Doolittle's Animal Rescue Kaitaia and , had the puppies surrendered to them. Here at Phoenix Animal Wellness we did the x-ray work up to discover where those fiddly little tubes were going astray and then with the generous help of Helen Milner we spent all day in surgery replumbing the pups back to normal. Both puppies are doing really well, can both squat and p*e and no longer have horrid, dribbly, smelly bums. Thanks to everyone involved for a lovely happy outcome for these gorgeous pups.

Phoenix Animal Wellness in Kerikeri, is searching for a graduate with a few years experience for a full time position. We are a companion animal practice, seeing the odd lifestyle pet, and our aim is to bring new skills and services to the Far North. Our independent clinic was established less than 2 years ago, and we already offer a range of referral and specialist services in the Bay of Islands, as well as first opinion general practice. We also work alongside many local animal charities assisting them with desexing campaigns and shelter work. All our 4 vets are pursuing their own passions and developing new services for the clinic. We already offer; Referral orthopaedics, Advanced reproduction work including TCI, Acupuncture, Hip & Elbow scoring, BOAS surgery and other referral soft tissue surgeries. We have all the usual equipment you would expect to find in a modern clinic plus a few extras such as Imagyst and Phovia.
The role is for a full time veterinarian, working a 1 in 4 rota with a vet nurse, generous salary and CPD allowance, private health care and a fantastic, highly skilled, supportive team. This is a new position to help us expand with demand and would suit someone with ambition and a desire to grow professionally.

For more information or just a chat about the role, please call or email Paula; 021 035 4361 - [email protected]

Specialist Surgery at Phoenix Animal Wellness. Lots of dogs suffer from ear conditions but this poor fellow had a serious infection that had defied veterinary treatment for 5 years before he came to us. Due to the chronic nature of the problem and the nasty bacteria that were involved, we decided the best option was a Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA), this means the entire ear, up to the level of the skull is removed, along with all the infected tissues. It is a long and tricky surgery and Vet Annie did a fantastic job, because now for the first time in 5 years this lovely old chap has no pain in his ear and has a new lease of life.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a condition that affects the breathing of some of our most popular breeds, such as French bulldogs, Pugs etc. Paula has now completed a course that qualifies her to perform the surgery required to alleviate some of the symptoms, such as soft palate shortening, widening of the nose and removal of pr*****ed larynx tissues. This surgery can bring enormous relief to many dogs; improving their breathing, ability to exercise and enable them to cope with the Northland heat. If your dog suffers from any of these issues, book a consultation with us to discuss the options available.

Go go Gomez...NOOO stop. A couple of weeks before Xmas Gomez did a handbrake turn and hit a fence, well his eyeball did, and oops it popped out! We pushed it back in and stitched his eye closed, which can settle things down if there is not too much damage, but wow there was a great big ulcer on his eye where he had hit the fence. Now pugs don't like having eyedrops put in and the ulcer got deeper and nastier. It was now the day before Xmas eve and we couldn't refer him to the eye specialist, so we bit the bullet, and decided we could do a corneal graft. This is where you get a piece of tissue from the side of the eyeball and stitch it onto the damaged part of the eyeball. Very delicate suturing and quite scary. He managed to pull it all apart after a couple of weeks but enough stayed in place to kick start the healing process, and look, Gomez can see again! It took a few weeks but he is back to his usual chubby, chirpy self, and he has learnt to have eyedrops put in now too.

You Dirty Rat!! Lexie's owner saw her wolf down a dead rat in the garden. When she tried to stop her Lexie swallowed faster. We were worried a dead rat might be a poisoned rat, and most rat baits can still affect a dog if it eats a poisoned rat. So we had to make Lexie vomit it back up again, and WOW she definitely swallowed it whole! Unfortunately the drug we use to induce vomiting causes drowsiness so Lexie had to go home and sleep it off.

We are closed today for the public holiday but are always available for emergencies. You will have seen Louie here before when he ate some old bones, yesterday he ate karaka berries! Luckily we got to him quickly and managed to make him vomit them back up again. Karaka berries are very toxic to dogs causing vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness and seizures and unfortunately can be fatal. The wet and windy weather has knocked a lot of berries off the trees.
If your dog has eaten a karaka berry/seed, seek veterinary assistance immediately. Usually we can induce vomiting to bring the berry/seed up and avoid the karakin toxin being absorbed. Dogs that develop symptoms of karaka berry toxicity can be treated, but depending on the severity of the symptoms may not always recover. Prevention is always best!
If you are braving the weather and taking your dog for a walk, be on the look out for these fallen seeds.
