“Pet friendly” is not an aesthetic or trend. It is not just a marketing tool to exploit the bond between furparents and their pets. It should never result in discrimination.

Being truly pet friendly means embracing a holistic, inclusive love for all pets. Let’s ensure that your doors are open to every pet, regardless of breed. To be truly “pet friendly” is to foster genuine inclusivity and love.

Every dog, regardless of breed, deserves love, care, and respect. Filipino dogs are just as loyal, loving, and wonderful as any other breed. Let’s celebrate our amazing dogs and stand up against any form of unfair treatment. 💖🐾

While we appreciate declarations of spaces as pet-friendly, establishments should be thorough and clear with their guidelines before declaring themselves “pet-friendly” spaces.

Pet owners are also enjoined to ensure the facility fits their pet’s particulars and not rely on bare declarations.

Just like animal welfare, creating a pet-friendly space is a community effort.

Kabosu, the Doge meme dog, passed away Friday, May 24, 2024, her owner announced on social media.

"She went very peacefully without suffering as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her. Thank you all so much for loving Kabosu all these years. I am certain that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world. That makes me the happiest owner in the world."

Asoka makeup trend is inspired by the 2001 Bollywood film "Asoka." The film is about Asoka (also spelled as Ashoka), the noted emperor of the Maurya Empire who ruled India nearly 2400 years ago. It was during his time that a writing style called Brahmi was developed. Among its later forms reached the Philippines before the Spaniards came, like Baybayin of the Tagalogs, Kulitan of the Kapampangans, Surat Mangyan and Surat Tagbanwa, among others.

And by the way, 2024 is the 75th Anniversary of Philippine-India Diplomatic Relations. And one of the chapter in our book Dogs in Philippine History discusses about the introduction of three Spanish dogs brought to Madras (now Chennai) through a Galleon ship from Manila in 1705. Daud Khan, a feared general of India's Mughal Empire, loved the said dogs so much that he even dispatched his navy to accompany the Spanish ship back to Manila and to present his letter of friendship to the Philippine Governor-General.

On 20 April 2023, Princess, a 4-month-old Belgian Malinois, captured the hearts of the Filipino people for alerting her master that someone was left inside their burning home in General Santos City. Princess braved the fire by accompanying her master in saving the latter’s son. The dog caught fire but fortunately survived, with marks of heroism all over her body.

Thanks to Tita Doc Jacquiline Rufino Madi for contributing some photos of Princess to our book, Dogs in Philippine History. We need to document every dog's heroism in our country.

PAWS: Killua’s Body Tested Positive for Rabies, Criminal Complaint Will Still Be Filed Today

PAWS would like to inform the public that Killua’s body tested positive for rabies and urges those who may have been scratched or bitten by the dog to immediately get post-exposure shots. This includes pet owner Vina Arazas who hugged the bloodied body of her beloved dog when she found him at a known dog slaughter area in Sta Cruz, Bato, Camarines Sur. While the result of the testing may not be accurate due to the fact that the body had already been buried for five days prior to testing and may have been contaminated from being in an area where many stray dogs have already been slaughtered, PAWS is making this announcement to ensure that any bites or scratches will be reported promptly in the interest of public health and safety.

In the BAI’s Manual of Procedure for Rabies, the standard protocol for an animal suspected to be afflicted with rabies is for it to “be observed for fourteen (14) days or, in case of highly suspected rabies cases, be humanely euthanised with no damage to the head. “

PAWS is still set to file criminal charges against Anthony Solares for animal cruelty as CCTV footages show that he was the one who chased the dog and even poked Killua while the animal was hiding under a car in order to make it come out so he could beat Killua to death.

PAWS is also filing charges of Anti Rabies Act or RA 9482 violation for engaging in dog meat trade. After killing Killua, Solares brought the dog to a known slaughterhouse and dog meat cooking area. Solares owns a carinderia business which sells meat viands near the dog slaughter area.

PAWS also calls on any one who may have consumed dogs coming from the area where Killua’s body was found to get post exposure shots. “They are at great risk. Dog meat traders are not only cruel people but pose a serious threat to public health.”

Praying that justice will be served 🙏🏽

On reports of a dog named Killua having been beaten to death in Camarines Sur:

PAWS is as outraged as all the netizens who have tagged us on social media and assures the public that we are working on this and that we will file a case.

PAWS STATEMENT ON KILLUA

We condemn the brutal killing of this dog.

The animal offender claims that this was an act of self-defense but video evidence shows that Killua, the dog, was being chased by him and none of the elements of self-defense were present.

Further, there are humane ways of animal control. The City Veterinarian’s Office can be called in for this task. Clearly, there was no reason for Killua to be killed in this manner as he was not harming any one.

PAWS is an organization which has worked for 70 years speaking up for animals and promoting their kind and humane treatment. We are extremely upset and dismayed that this crime has happened and the organization would like to emphasize once more the importance of filing criminal cases.

Because the pet owner and witnesses have submitted affidavits, PAWS will be able to file charges of violation of the Animal Welfare Act and ensure that the person responsible for this crime will be held accountable.

We call on witnesses of other crimes against animals that have been posted on social media to step forward and cooperate with law enforcement agents and seek help, if needed, for the filing of the cases.

Tagging on social media will not result in punishment unless a criminal complaint is filed in Court.

The law is there and we all have a collective duty to protect animals by doing our part, especially witnesses and those with personal knowledge —by making sure that these cases are filed.

We can end the impunity of animal offenders by filing these cases and we cannot afford to delay nor remain silent.

The time to act is now because the animals depend on us.

Let us not let the animals down.
