🐾 Case Highlight: Closed Pyometra in Dogs and Cats 🐾

Today, at Mitsuha Veterinary Clinic, we treated a case of Closed Pyometra in one of our patients. This condition can be life-threatening for both dogs and cats, and early detection is crucial. Here’s what every pet owner should know:

🩺 What is Pyometra?
Pyometra is a severe infection of the uterus that typically affects unspayed female dogs and cats. It occurs when bacteria invade the uterus, leading to pus accumulation. There are two types:

Open Pyometra: The cervix remains open, allowing pus to drain, often seen as discharge.
Closed Pyometra: The cervix is closed, trapping the infection inside the uterus, which makes it harder to detect and more dangerous.

⚠️ Symptoms to Watch For
In closed pyometra, symptoms can be subtle since there is no discharge. Watch out for:

✔️Lethargy
✔️Loss of appetite
✔️Increased thirst and urination
✔️Abdominal pain or swelling
✔️Vomiting
✔️Fever (occasionally)

🚑 Why It’s an Emergency
In closed pyometra cases, the infected uterus can rupture, leading to a potentially fatal infection in the abdomen. This is why immediate veterinary attention is critical.

🐶🐱 Treatment Options
The most effective treatment is surgical removal of the infected uterus and ovaries (spaying). In some cases, antibiotics and supportive care may be used initially, but surgery is the best option to prevent recurrence and save your pet’s life.

Spaying your dog or cat not only prevents pyometra but also reduces the risk of certain cancers, improving their overall health and lifespan.

Pre-registration is required. Please message us to secure a slot Rates: Male Cat – ₱1000 Female Cat – ₱1500 Male Dog – ₱1500 Female Dog – ₱2500 Important Notes: 1. An additional ₱200 will be charged for every kilogram exceeding 10kg. 2. Anti-rabies vaccination and deworming are REQUIRED before surgery. 3. CBC test is RECOMMENDED but is at the owner's discretion. 4.Inclusions: anesthesia, professional fee, and injectable medications. 5. Exclusions: take-home medications. 6. A pet cage is required on the day of surgery.

Here’s the story of our brave girl, Patty. Patty had been lethargic for the past few days and showed a noticeable loss of appetite before her vet visit. Although she only vomited once and there was no diarrhea, a parvo test was recommended by the veterinarian. Unfortunately, the result came back positive for parvovirus. Parvovirus is one of the most commonly diagnosed diseases in dogs, especially in puppies. The good news is that this disease is preventable. Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
