What is CANINE PARVOVIRUS?
Canine parvovirus, often referred to as "parvo," is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects dogs, especially puppies.
Transmission
- The virus is spread through direct contact with an infected dog or through contact with contaminated feces, surfaces, or objects (like food bowls, shoes, and clothing).
Symptoms
- Severe vomiting
- Bloody diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration
- Fever or low body temperature (hypothermia)
Risk Factors
- Puppies between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 months are at the highest risk.
- Dogs that are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated are more susceptible.
Prevention
- “Vaccination”is the most effective way to prevent parvovirus.
Because of its severity and contagious nature, canine parvovirus is a major concern for dog owners, breeders, and veterinarians.
