Do you know that there are worms that can live in the esophagus (lalamunan in tagalog) of your dog?
Meet the Esophageal worm (Spirocerca lupi). This worm is perhaps mostly underdiagnosed since its eggs are seldom seen on regular f***l examination procedures in clinics. We have been encountering this worm since 2003, although cases are not as high as hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms and heartworms.
There is a published case in Baybay City. That's just about 2 1/2 hours away from Tacloban. Which simply means that Spirocerca lupi is present in our islands and elsewhere in the country.

Where do our dog gets the worms?
Dogs become infected when they consume or injest the intermediate host like the "Dung Beetles" or transport host like, chicken offal, reptiles and rodents.

Can Spirocerca lupi infestation kill my pet?
Any severe worm infestation can kill a pet. In spirocerca cases, a complication due to the worms migrations in the aorta, causing aortic aneurysms that may rupture leading to thoracic hemorrhages and sudden death. Nodules caused by the worm infestations in the esophagus and other digestive tract parts may become malignant and progress to a sarcoma or other associated neaplastic (cancer) growths.

What are the clinical signs of the infestation?
Typical signs are regurgitation, coughing with retching-like about to vomit (sometimes mucous to vomitus and sometimes with blood are expelled), and dyspnea (shortness of breath), weight loss, and melena (black stool)can be observed.

Is there a treatment or can it be done at home (or DIY)?
Treatment is best done after a diagnosis from your Veterinarian. The initial treatment should be initiated by your Vet., and to include the treatment of other co-infections due to the infestation. After the series of treatment, preventive dewormings can be done at home with guidance from your Vet.
