It is a combination of visual observation and heat detection aids. The most reliable sign of heat is when a cow stands to be mounted by another cow. Here are some heat detection methods:


An inexpensive and effective method that involves applying a strip of paint to the rear of each cow's backbone. When a cow is in heat, other cows or a bull will rub off the paint as they mount her.


These can include scratch cards, chin-ball markers, or other types of markers.


These use sensors or accelerometers placed on a cow's neck or foot to monitor her activity. Pedometers may be the most effective, but the quality of the data depends on several factors, including the activity threshold and upload frequency.

Automated heat detection systems
These use electronic sensors to record hormonal, physiological, or behavioral changes around the time of heat and ovulation. A computer algorithm then analyzes the data to identify cows that are likely to be in heat.


This is the most important method, and involves observing the herd at key times, such as early morning, midday, and late evening. Ideally, you should observe the cows for 15–20 minutes at a time, three times a day.

Fowl pox (FP) is a viral disease in hens, turkeys and many other birds, characterized by cutaneous lesions on the feather-less skin and/or diphtheritic lesions of mucous coats of the upper alimentary and respiratory tract. FP is encountered in either cutaneous or diphtheritic form or in both. In most outbreaks, the cutaneous form is prevailing. The lesions vary according to the stage of development: papules, vesicles, pustules or crusts. The lesions are usually in the region of the head, they maybe found on legs and toes.
