What is meant by ovariohysterectomy or spaying?
Spaying is the common term used to describe the surgical procedure known as an ovariohysterectomy. In this procedure, the ovaries and uterus are removed completely in order to sterilize a female cat.
Why should I have my cat spayed?
It is recommended that all non-breeding cats be sterilized.
Several health benefits are associated with spaying your cat.
First, spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers.
Second, breast cancer is the number one type of cancer diagnosed in intact (unspayed) female cats.
If your cat is spayed before her first heat cycle, there is less than ½ of 1% (0.5%) chance of developing breast cancer. With every subsequent heat cycle, the risk of developing breast cancer increases. After about 2½ years of age, ovariohysterectomy offers no protective benefit against developing breast cancer.
Unspayed female cats also carry the risk of developing pyometra – a fatal condition of the uterus that requires surgery to treat.

What is Caudectomy?
Caudectomy is a surgical procedure which involves amputating all or part of a cat’s tail. There are two types of caudectomy: partial and total. If a cat undergoes partial caudectomy, only part of the tail is removed. In total caudectomy, the entire tail is removed. There are several conditions that may warrant caudectomy in cats, particularly those caused by traumatic injury or infection that do not respond to conservative treatment.
Caudectomy should not be confused with “tail docking,” a common procedure in dogs performed for cosmetic reasons. Although both procedures involve removing part of the tail, caudectomy is performed by a veterinary surgeon for medical reasons.
Caudectomy Procedure in Cats
The exact procedural steps will vary based on how much of the tail needs to be removed and why. The general procedure is outlined below.
The cat will first be anesthetized.
An x-ray will be taken to visualize the extent of the injury, if present.
The tail will then be shaved prior to surgery.
The cat will be draped and prepped for surgery.
The surgeon will determine the best place to make the initial incision, usually between two intact vertebrae.
The skin will be separated from the tail bone.
The surgeon will then cut through the bone, completely removing the tail.
Cauterization may be used to stop bleeding.
The wound will then be sutured.
Efficacy of Caudectomy in Cats
Caudectomy is generally very effective at treating conditions and injuries to the tail that would be unable to heal on their own or do not respond to other types of treatment. Although cats will have to adjust to the absence of their tails following the procedure, caudectomy does not generally have any long-term effects on the cat’s behavior. A cat’s balance may be slightly offset by the removal of the tail at first. However, this does not typically have any detrimental consequences for a cat’s overall health.

Myiasis is a the term used to describe a maggot infestation. Maggots are fly larva that feed on necrotic and dying tissue. Especially prone are those pets confined to the outdoors with situations in which their skin remains moist. This includes pets with draining wounds, urine or fecal stained hair coats, or bacterial skin infections. Sustained skin moisture can cause damage, inflammation and infection setting up a favorable environment for maggots. This applies especially to weak and debilitated pets.
The majority of maggots found on pets are larva from blowflies (family Callliphoria). The blowfly lays many eggs on decaying, infected or inflamed tissue. In favorable weather (warm and moist) the eggs hatch within 24 hours. The cone shaped larva uses its specialized mouth parts, including hooks, to lap up liquids and pierce the skin. After feeding and maturing for 5-7 days, the maggots leave the animal and enter the soil. Adult flies then emerge a few weeks later. Some maggots only invade dead or dying tissue. Unfortunately, some do not know when to stop and leave the decaying tissue to start feeding on healthy tissue.
Diagnosis of Myiasis in Cats
Diagnosis of myiasis is based on visualizing the maggots on the skin or in the wounds. Fly eggs can sometimes be found. Eggs (also called fly blow) are small white and sticky. They usually can only be removed by shaving the hair.
Treatment of Maggots in Cats
Treatment of myiasis in cats is to remove the maggots physically. Maggots are quite hardy and can be difficult to kill safely.
Shaving the hair from the affected area is the first step. After hair removal, the extent of the maggot infestation can now be seen. Frequently, the maggots hide under the hair coat and extend a lot further than initially suspected.
