Cavalettis is an essential element of physiotherapy.
It’s a mode of physiotherapy that is used to identify coordination and proprioception efficiency in animals, while working on the flexor muscle groups on all limbs.
We have seen how our patients who practiced these exercises consistently benefited in their movements. It’s a simple exercise that challenges both the mind and body 🧠🐕
There are countless of cavalettis variations we can do to target specific conditions of individual animals.
We have summarised the fundamentals of cavalettis into this simple video for you to try them at home! This is recommended for animals with no medical condition.
Please drop us a DM if you are not sure if your dog/cat is suitable for this exercise ☺️

Happy National Day Everyone!
We will be closed for National Day on the 9 Aug 2022
Wobble Cushion Tutorial
Wobble cushion exercise is a simple exercise that challenges the patient by removing the stability the ground provides and forces the postural muscles along the limbs to provide that stability.
Over time this helps to build a stronger postural muscle support that can help prevent injuries in the future.
Poor posture is also very common in our dogs due to micro structural deformities.
Wobble cushion exercise can also help correct these postures.
More complicated posture correction may require more detailed guidance from a trained rehab therapist.
But for those who are reasonably healthy, do try out this simple wobble cushion exercise at home with your pets at home!

Home based Passive Range of Motion(PROM) Exercised for your pets.
It is when a movement is created without the animals engaging their own muscles that they would usually engage to start the movement.
PROM is one of the most common technique used by physical therapists.
PROM are good for keeping the animal's joints flexible and preventing contractures(severely tightened joints and muscles)
Range of motion of the animal often decreases with age and this causes a viscious cycle where the animal moves less, causing joints and muscles to be stiffer, which makes it even more uncomfortable for the animal to move, causing the animals to move less and the cycle continues.
PROM is a good way to help the animal break out of this viscious cycle by manually improving their flexibility and joint range of movement.
We've broken down this technique into simple steps so that you can start practicing it with your pet at home today ☺️

🧧Happy Chinese New Year!
新年快乐!🧧
Rehab Journey with Uncle
We're celebrating the year of the tiger with a post on Uncle the Ginger Cat 🐯
Uncle met with an unfortunate accident and fractured his hip some time in Feb 2020 when he was still a stray cat. He eventually got rescued and received his surgery in Feb 2021.
Uncle was still limping very badly 3 months post-op as the recovery was not as smooth as expected. The pain was overwhelming that he had to take a sit every few steps he make.
Within 7 months of rehab, Uncle was able to be back walking on 4 and capable of performing his daily activities :)
The question of whether to go for the surgery route or not is often a tough one to answer.
Cases of the same condition can have very different success rate for surgery depending on many factors such as the severity of each condition, environment and the animal's body. Surgery is an invasive procedure hence it definitely comes with a certain level of risk.
However that doesn't mean we should never consider surgery. There are cases that can do very well with surgery and may be catastrophic in the long term if no surgery is done.
A proper discussion with the surgeon, general practitioner and therapists can offer a more wholistic and unbias perspective on which route should be taken ☺️
Although Uncle was limping more after the surgery, the rehab progress of Uncle may potentially not be as smooth if no surgery was done!
When it comes to healthcare, we do not believe one always works better than the other, every discipline needs to work together in harmony to optimise the result we are working towards.
Remember that rehabilitation shouldn't be an alternative medicine, but an complementary one!
We're glad that Uncle is now living his best life! 🥰

Ace is a 10 years old German Shepherd that is with us to work on his hind legs paresis/weakness
Visually, symptoms of hind legs paresis and weakness are very similar;
Paresis is the reduced ability to activate the motor neurons and are often signs of myelopathy(spinal cord disease) or encephalopathy(brain disease) in the central nervous system.
Weakness is the decreased in strength for one or more muscles. It's a sign of neuropathy(nerve disease) or myopathy(muscle disease) in the peripheral nervous system.
Both problems are highly common in older large breeds, especially evident in the German Shepherds we see in Singapore due to the genetic make up.
For Ace, rehabilitation program is targeted at building muscle groups essential in supporting daily activities such as walking and toileting and also putting him in an environment that allows him to work on his muscles and range of motion without putting too much strain on his back and joints.
We're blessed to live in an age where hydro treadmill is available for dogs like Ace to work on!

Thunder's Rehab Journey
Meet Thunder, 3 years old Boston Terrier diagnosed with grade 2/3 patella luxation managed by Cynthia!
A condition where the patella is dislocated out of position. Patella luxation may affect different animals differently. Some patella luxation conditions may not affect the movement at the moment, but may eventually lead to secondary issues such as earlier onset of arthritis or increased risk of various ligament injuries.
Some cases needs to go through surgery if the animal's quality of life is directly affected. Do consult with your vet or rehab therapist if you have any doubts!
Rehabilitation for most patella luxation cases are aimed to reduce the risk of secondary issues by building muscle mass and a better posture.
Building the muscle mass and a better posture can go a long way especially if the dog is young and active.
The best way to manage the condition is definitely to forbid all running and fooling around, but where is the quality of life if we take away everything that brings joy to the animal?
We believe in managing instead of forbidding.
We believe in optimising instead of maximising 😉

Hugo's rehab journey
Hugo the bro is a 15 years old Golden Retriever, not bad at all for an old lad ☺️
Hugo has what we call a lower motor neuron Lesion symptom, which is a damage on the axons leaving the spinal cord or the ventral gray matter of the spinal cord.
This may be caused by autoimmune conditions such as polymyositis or neuromuscular junction disease. It can also be caused by other infection or poisoning but it is unlikely the case in Singapore as poisonous animals are not a very common encounter for our companion animals.
Our rehab is targeted on increasing the range of function of Hugo's muscles on the hinds through strength and proprioception training while managing the compensating muscles and joints on the back and front limbs with deep tissue release, PROM and laser. Hugo is also doing swimming and Hydrotreadmill at @thenakedpetsg ☺️
The condition is a progressive one hence all these efforts are for maintenance and slowing down of the degeneration. With that, we extend the possibility for mobility independence and tolerance for daily activity. On a whole, this helps Hugo the bro to continue living his best life 🥰❤️
