Mules were grown in ancient times, and in medieval Europe, where the task of breeding horses was to obtain large animals capable of carrying heavily armed knights, clergy, as well as women and other civilians, rode mules. The special qualities of mules were appreciated by travelers. Christopher Columbus, setting out on his second expedition in 1495, took several mares and donkeys with him to get mules that would travel deep into the newly discovered continent.
