“Free Kitten”

If all goes right, and your free kitten never has a single thing wrong with them (that’s a dream), this is your baseline expense (for medical, I went off a local low-cost clinic) in just the first three months:

💉Vaccines:
They need 3 FVRCP, 2 FeLV, and 1 rabies.
$30 x 4 (because FVRCP + FeLV exist) = $120
But don’t forget the usually $50 exam fee!

Total: $170

✂️ Spay / Neuter
IF all goes right during surgery:
$195 spay
$95 male

Total: $195 or $95

🫙 Food
1 can, 4x a day at $1/can if you’re going cheap
$4 x 90

Total: $360

🦟 Flea/tick/heartworm preventatives
$20/month
$20 x 3

Total: $60

💻 Microchip
$30

🤯 FIRST THREE MONTHS TOTAL:
With spay: $815
With neuter: $715

Remember- that’s if you use a low cost clinic, get cheap food, and NOTHING goes wrong!

Other things to factor in:
- toys
- beds
- bowls
- deworming
- emergencies (generally start at $125 for just the exam)
- nail trims
- if your kitten has a complicated spay/neuter surgery, those added expenses
- optional pre-surgical bloodwork for spay/neuter
- I’m probably missing a lot but this is the minimum.

Things that don’t cost money, but cost you:
- no vacations
- no all day trips
- sleepless nights
- added stress
- disruption of the current household pets

🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🩶🤍🤎

This is not to persuade you to not get that free kitten. It’s just the reality you will face. If you are unprepared for any of these, I would strongly suggest just enjoying how cute that kitten is and letting someone else who IS prepared take them, or adopting a kitten who has already had all their vaccines, spay/neuter, and are healthy.

No kitten is truly free. And an adoption fee is simply to help offset the hundreds of dollars spent on the kitten already. Please never complain about an adoption fee!

These two are so cute together ♥️

Today, Gretchen learned how to scootch under the pen and get out. Imagine my thoughts and shock seeing her come into the living room!! So, the pen is gone and now they have free rein of the whole room. Our poor cats got their food moved into the bathroom again since now this door has to stay shut 😅
Guess they played hard! Knocked out 💤

It’s ACO appreciation week, and I can’t help myself- I’ve got to shout out this AMAZING lady!

Officer Witmer is an Animal Control Officer for the county of Prince Edward, VA. When we lived in the county, she was always hands on learning from us, volunteering, and making wonderful things happen for kitties in the shelter.

Prince Edward County Animal Shelter has 2 officers and (if they’re lucky) 1-2 volunteers. That’s IT. No staff. Their intake is HUGE and they work incredibly hard, long hours saving every life they can. They consistently attend trainings, stay up to date with the latest trends and opportunities, and have fantastic relationships with their rescues. They still contact us for ideas and resources!

Pictured is Officer Witmer holding a neonatal kitten that was brought into the shelter a few days ago. She had to foster this bottle baby all while working, until the rescue had room to intake him. (She did call one night worried because he wasn’t pooping, but she was able to get him to!) The precious kitten is now in rescue and healthy, all thanks to this caring ACO.

I hope you are as impressed as we are by her. We just had to share and brag!

We love and miss you Officer Witmer! Tell Sunbeam HI! (She adopted him from us last year)

I want to share a piece of homeowner advice that a lot of people forget about: changing your air filter.

We change ours every 30 days. On the dot. We have it on the calendar- it’s that important.

I’m allergic to cats and dogs.
We have 10 cats, a Husky, and a Great Pyrenees all inside.
You probably think our house is disgusting- but those of you that have been here, know it’s squeaky clean. (It has to be or I wouldn’t be able to breathe!)

We have a fairy large home. The roomba vacuums at 8am every morning. I vacuum before bed every night. We dust about once a week, and wash bedding/blankets the same. When people come over, they can’t believe we have all these animals and our house isn’t like they pictured in their heads. I’m a clean f r e a k.

So you would THINK. That the air filter would be clean. HA! Nope. Existing in a house is disgusting. Dust is made up of mostly dead skin cells floating around. Then you get dust mites. And everytime one of these hairy animals shakes or scratches, fur flies even if we don’t see it. Every time we walk around, open/close a door, the air stirs and gets sucked up into our vents. And it looks like tge pictures below.

This is what you breathe. This is what your animals breathe. My fellow kitten rescuers or human baby mamas out there- your babies with their delicate immune systems are breathing this in! The point of an air filter is to prevent all that nastiness from going through your vents and you breathing it in.

I wish I was getting paid to sell air filters, but.. I just pick mine up at Lowes. I’ve been told that if you have pets don’t go any lower than a MERV 11 (which you can find on the non-wiry side ends).

And just in case you were never taught, the side with the metal and X’s goes in towards the vent, and that ensures the filter fragments don’t get sucked in. The plain side faces out towards you.

Anyway. Idk why I chose to write this. Hopefully it helps someone.

Change your filters 🙂

Batcat also had an appointment yesterday!

We had Dr. Pringle at Countryside Animal Hospital take a look at his lip and did some research. He has what appears to be a lip aversion, meaning it was physically pulled down due to some kind of trauma.

There was a published article detailing a similar case, however in that case the lip ended up pulling down further and required surgery with a ladder stitch. Batcat’s lip has only improved in the weeks he has been here so having to have surgery is very unlikely to be the case. 😊

Dr. Pringle kept telling him “you are not vengeance. You are not the night” everytime he squeaked… as he is a very squeaky vocal little guy. (Batman reference for the cool kids) 😂😂

Gretchen-

Had a lovely visit with Dr. Pringle and Kelli at Countryside Animal Hospital !

Grade 2 murmur, common in kittens due to the flow of their blood through their developing heart. They usually go away with age! (This also can happen in human children!)

Here’s a great article about heart murmurs in cats/kittens that also goes over “flow murmers”.

If you guessed a f***l sample, you guessed right! We run these to check for many things! In this rescue, we commonly submit f***l samples for:
- roundworms
- hookworms
- giardia
- coccidia
- tapeworms
- panleukopenia

This is Batman’s stool, which has been very runny for a few days. He was dewormed, and the stool has little white specks in it so he definitely had worms! We are hoping that’s all that’s contributing to the runny stool, but submitting a full test will let us know whatever we need to do:)

Dropped this pretty lady off at the airport this morning to begin the first leg of her trek to Everest!

I want to extend a huge shout out to Arielle Riv for watching Gretchen and Batman this weekend so I can go out of town to a horse competition ♥️ She is one of about two people I trust to take care of kittens exactly (if not better!) like us. THANK YOU! Hope this doesn’t embarrass you!

With our most recent TNR operation, our community fund is depleted! We need your help to restock it! Here’s why:

When we were at Oak Park doing TNR, there was a very sick kitty with bilateral ear infections (to the point of deafness) + URI. We tried for two days to catch her without success, and ultimately left our card with her caretaker to call us if she got her hands on her (which she usually can). Today, we got a message saying they were going to spend most of the day trying to catch her. When they do, I told them to take her to CCVS. We really want to help out with this bill, because it is a low income individual trying to do the right thing.

You already know I will be all over the updates for you.
