Did you know?

Here’s your yearly PSA about loose salt Vs salt blocks!!

Did you know that salt blocks were designed for cattle? Cattle have rough washcloth type tongues like a cat. They can lick those blocks and get enough salt. Especially in a herd situation there are enough cows to actually USE up the blocks.

Did you know that horses have a smooth tongue? Much like a dog or even us! Horses on average need 2-3 tablespoons of salt daily for all the bodily functions that require salt!!

It would take a horse hours on a salt block to get enough. Many horses have actually learned to give up on the blocks and will ignore them. Never even trying to get enough salt. You know what getting a salt burn on your tongue feels like right???

So consider choosing loose salt for your equine buddies! It’s SUPER cheap! I was at TSC yesterday and priced a 50 lbs bag for less than $10!

When everyone else gives up, it is the women who sings the songs of strength. She is the backbone of the people. So, to our women we say, sing your songs of strength; pray for your special powers; keep our people strong; be respectful, gentle, and modest."

The cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-sho-she), commonly known as the poinsettia, has a rich history deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of the Aztecs. The original Nahuatl name, cuetlaxochitl, carries profound meanings that encompass its significance to the Aztec civilization. Renowned for its vibrant red flame-like blossoms, the cuetlaxochitl represents renewal and the emergence of new life as it blooms during the winter solstice.

In Aztec society, the cuetlaxochitl held various purposes beyond its ornamental value. It was cultivated not only for its beauty but also for its practical uses. The plant's red and purple dyes were extracted to color textiles, while its milky sap found application in medicinal practices. The cuetlaxochitl played a crucial role in Aztec ceremonies and rituals, adorning temples and symbolizing the sacred power represented by Huitzilopochtli, the Left-Handed Hummingbird deity associated with the sun.

The introduction of the cuetlaxochitl to the United States occurred through Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico. However, Poinsett's tenure as ambassador was marred by his support for a social hierarchy favoring "white Creoles" in Mexican society. Today, Indigenous communities highlight the racist views of Poinsett and advocate for the reclamation of the flower's original Nahuatl name.

According to oral tradition, the cuetlaxochitl was initially white in color. However, after the Mexika killed the people of Taxco, the leaves of the cuetlaxochitl turned red during their subsequent blooming. This legend emphasizes the connection between the flower's transformation and the loss of lives, signifying the cyclical nature of existence and the endurance of life amidst adversity.

Aside from its cultural symbolism, the cuetlaxochitl possesses remarkable medicinal properties. It’s used in traditional remedies, such as increasing the production of breast milk in nursing mothers and as an important component of women's medicine. The milky sap of the plant is employed in poultices to treat skin diseases, and its red dye is utilized to color textiles and crafts. However, it is crucial to note that, like many medicinal plants, the cuetlaxochitl can be poisonous if not used correctly.

Given the growing movement to reclaim indigenous names and traditions, it is time to honor the beauty and significance of the cuetlaxochitl by using its Nahuatl name more widely. Just as indigenous peoples are reconnecting with their ancestral roots, it is essential to acknowledge and respect the plants true name and deep cultural and historical importance. By calling this iconic plant cuetlaxochitl, we can honor the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Aztec.
