Rhea was having a hard time settling indoors with other dogs around. Even though she does often like other dogs, inside was just too much for her. So we brought Abbey in for some practice, Rhea (& her mom!) absolutely nailed it with the right set up !

Abbey decided it was a fun idea to chase a squirrel in our backyard this week, so I decided to practice a bit of a made up recall game to help practice some set up redirection! Note: this was built up I did not just go out and throw a ball randomly and expect instant perfection, she has a good foundation & there were set up elements to this so she was set up for success while while practicing!!! Go Ab!

One outside perk of being a dog trainer?! You know how to teach your dog fun tricks! Abbey is going to be the flower girl at our wedding, so we’ve been working on carrying the flower basket! Sounds somewhat simple, but you have to teach taking the desired object, holding it, carrying, and instead of just retrieving- bringing to a different person and then giving it all on cue & together in the right order! Abbey didn’t even know to hold the basket when we started (I mean cmon how many times as a puppy did we tell her to not to chew up baskets and other similar things!), and now look at her progress! She is going to be a superstar and we still have plenty of practice time left. And no, she doesn’t chew up the other baskets in the house!

Miss Scarlett (left) has made some huge progress with her training! (and who said old dogs can’t learn new tricks!?) Scarlett was very anxious in her new home and was quite reactive when seeing neighbors and dogs on the street (a couple of bigger dogs have charged and attacked her in her past). Her anxiety has subsided quite a bit and now she can walk by neighbors and many neighbor dogs without issue. Here she is able to sit calmly and very close to Abbey at a recent lesson (a huge step for her!) her owners have put it so much hard work and dedication and it is showing. Go Scarlett!

What makes having five dogs at the house for the day no big deal?! Training!! Abbey was happy to have her friends over & we were able to help out family members with their dogs and still have productive days with other work with minimal chaos! Training is helpful & important for all dogs so they can fit into and adapt to your lifestyle smoothly. Hi everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself on this page. My name is Kim & I am heading Colonial Dog Training’s new Maine division. Colonial has been (and continues to be!) a successful Boston-based company for the past 12 years! I myself have worked with dogs in some capacity for the past 10 years, starting in animal shelters while getting a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. From there I began working with Colonial in Boston and went on to additionally get experience in canine rehabilitation & fitness training as well as a Master’s degree in canine life sciences. Really though, that’s all just fancy stuff that shows that I love dogs, I love teaching people about dogs, & I would love to help you better communicate with, educate, and train your dog in what can be a chaotic and confusing human-driven world!
