Did you know? September is Happy Cat Month! Hooray! 😻 Happy Cat Month was established by the CATalyst Council (a feline focused non-profit) to highlight the unique needs cats have, and to promote the overall health and wellbeing of our feline friends🐈💕

Even though every month is a happy month when you have cats, be sure to celebrate by taking a little extra time this month to make sure everyone is up-to-date, has plenty of enrichment and stimulation... and of course, give them a little extra love 💖

Once again, for the 🍎6th year🍎 running, our Greater Augusta Back to School Program school supply drive was a great success! Staff and friends worked hard and collected ~$1600 in supplies (plus a generous monetary donation from Dr. Davis) this year for families in need📚📓✏️ We are so happy to be able to participate in this program and help our community! 🥰

If you know any families that have children that attend school in the Greater Augusta Area school district, the event is THIS WEEKEND on Sunday, August 18th from 1:00pm-3:00pm. They'll have the backpacks stuffed with supplies and ready to go... but they'll also have fun events such as haircuts, karate demo, face-painting, games and more! Check it out! 🚌

It's that time of year again! Greater Augusta Back to School Program is gearing up for their annual Back to School event! 🚌🍎 For the 6th year, we here at Pine Tree will be collecting school supplies to help benefit children in the Greater Augusta school district ✏️📚 If you want to help lend a hand, we will be accepting donations at our office through August 8th! (And as always, even a share of this post will help too!)

Today is a big day! 🫨 Today... is Mr. Dai Yu's 🎊17th BIRTHDAY!🎊 An integral part of Pine Tree since puppyhood, Dai has always been there to greet staff with a smile and patrol the halls with a stoic devotion. These days, he spends his well-earned "retirement" soaking up love and attention from everyone he meets 🥰 He has befriended many staff members, doctors, and their pets over the years- he's a little guy, but he's got a huge heart & personality!

Mr. Dai's mom also wants to thank all the doctors that have worked at Pine Tree over the years for their great care. Dr. Celeste Forgeron, Dr. Ami Sawtelle, Dr. Marie Barengo, Dr. Lisa Morin, and (currently) Dr. Amber Hathaway- Dai Yu couldn't have reached such a venerable age without you all! And thanks to Shannon, Caitlyn and Desiree for providing his regular laser sessions to keep him comfort in his golden years 💛

We know a fair amount of our patients boarded at White Willow when it was formerly known as Willow Run. If you were looking to familiarize yourself with the new owners & staff and reacquaint yourself with the facility, they are having an Open House this Saturday from Noon-3:00pm with lots of fun to be had! In our last post, we mentioned monitoring for signs of heatstroke in pets as a heat-safety tip. But what are the signs? Our friends at AAHA have a helpful, brief article with information on signs, prevention, and more! With heatwaves on the horizon this week, it might be helpful to review and arm yourself with knowledge!

**If you suspect your dog might have heatstroke (or even heat exhaustion), please contact your regular veterinarian (or emergency clinic if after hours) IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait! Even up here in Maine the heat can be deadly! 🥵🌡️

We're bracing for a heatwave this coming week, so let's refresh on some basic hot-weather tips. Some key reminders:

🚗 NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A CAR. Not even with the windows cracked. Not even if you're parked in the shade. Not even if you'll "only be a few minutes." We're staring down 90+ degree weather and in only 10 minutes, the inside of a car can hit 109-114 degrees in that weather! DON'T gamble that you'll be in and out quick enough!
💧 Make sure you have plenty of fresh, cool water down for your pets, even if they're indoor-only!
🐾 Keep pets off the asphalt- at these temperatures, the pavement can burn pawpads quickly!
🌾 Keep outdoor visits to a minimum, and make sure there's plenty of shade available
🏊 Never leave pets unsupervised around pools or other bodies of water
😎 Take it easy (reduce exercise/activity) and watch for signs of heat stroke!

It's that time of year again! Easter is coming up fast this year, and many people are already decorating and picking out flowers. But when picking out arrangements for homes with cats, remember to ‼️ AVOID LILIES ‼️

Though beautiful, lilies can be deadly to kitties. All parts of the plant (including the pollen, and even the water the flowers are soaking in) are highly toxic if ingested! ☠️ And it only takes a small amount to have devastating results. So if you or the person you are buying for has cats, be safe and choose a lily-free arrangement 💐 There are many lovely choices out there that are much safer for our feline friends 😻🐾

Pine Tree's Christmas elves have been busy the last few weeks collecting food and supplies for our annual holiday donation basket 🧑‍🎄 This is a community service project that is very near and dear to our hearts- this is the 🎄NINTH YEAR🎄 we have contributed a holiday bounty to a family in need (and we look forward to many more)!

Staff was able to collect ~$500.00 in food and supplies, and Dr. Davis generously donated a $150.00 gift card for Shaw's on top of it! Thanks to our staff for all the work they put in, and thanks to our friends at South Parish Congregational Church UCC, Augusta, ME and The Amy Buxton Pet Pantry for connecting us a with a family to spoil this holiday season 🥰 We are happy to be able to help our community, and provide a family in need with a little extra holiday cheer 🎁💕✨

And the second half of donations are in to close out our pet food drive! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our food drive, whether it was through donations or even just spreading the word! 🤗 Through all of our efforts, we were able to collect a ✨grand total✨ of 570 pounds of dry food, 154 pounds of cat litter, and multiple cases of canned/soft food and treats for the folks over at the The Amy Buxton Pet Pantry 🥰🎉

Thank you so much for your generosity- this will be a big help to families and their furry friends in need this winter. We are so lucky to have such a caring community to help one another- you folks are rockstars! 🤩
