The puppies are 6 days old today and are thriving! We did lose one black male on day 2, but everyone else is happy and healthy. Raven has been an incredible and attentive mama.

We're anxiously waiting for Raven's puppies to arrive. In the meantime, we've got her whelping box all ready for her and the pups. We'll put in more layers over the blue tarp for comfort and warmth.

We place our whelping box in our dining room. There's enough privacy for our dams to comfortably whelp, but also enough social interaction going on in there the weeks after whelping to socialize pups. It also provides easy access to the back door to take the dam outside to potty and to take puppies out for exploring time once they're old enough.

For those that aren't familiar with whelping boxes, here are some of the benefits.

1. Your dog will have a safe zone to bring them comfort throughout the birthing process.
Your dog will be able to go to their whelping box in the time leading up to labor, and realize it as the desired area to have her puppies.

2. A secure area to give birth will promote a healthy birthing process and help to eliminate stress.

3. A whelping box can keep the puppies safe in the weeks following birth, as they will be unable to crawl away from mom.

4. Having an enclosed area means that you can modify the area for comfort, warmth, and any other necessities.

5. A whelping box can allow you to offer a temperature controlled area for when mom ventures away from her puppies, as puppies can’t often regulate their temperature without their mother’s help.

Raven has exciting news for everybody. Not only did she get a "Good" rating for her OFA hip test and "Normal" for her OFA elbow test, she has a little more of a secret she wants to tell you.

Raven went to the vet again today and had a puppy count xray. You heard us right, we have puppies on board and she's due approximately October 20th. Her xray revealed at least 7 puppies. We're still taking deposits for this litter if you're interested.

Raven had her OFA hip and elbow films taken last week and we're patiently waiting on the results.

After her appointment, Raven enjoyed an outing to Home Depot with her tiny human.

Hey all, I know we've been super quiet on here lately and I wanted to give you all an update.

We recently acquired a new stud from Russia. Registered name Balinor Band Malcolm. He's a gorgeous bench bred chocolate Lab. He's adjusting to his new life in the states and doing well. We're working on transferring his registration to AKC and finishing up his health testing.

One of the females we added to the crew in 2019 just turned two in May. Fly had her OFA hip and elbow films taken in June. She scored good on her hips and normal on her elbows. She's been working on getting started in Rally and is a curious and smart girl.

Raven has completed her genetic testing and is almost ready for OFA hip and elbow rads. She'll be two next month. We've also been working with her on obedience and rally. She's a quick learner and loves to please.

We also started making custom totes for when we send puppies home, so our next litters will go home with some sweet goodie bags!

We just have a couple pups left from our last litters we'd like to introduce you all to.

Meet Blitzen - Blitzen is your average good ol' pal. He loves retrieving, cuddling, and playing in his water bowl. He's your average Lab in that he wants to be doing whatever you're doing.

Meet Cupid - Just like his name implies, he'll make you fall in love. He wants to be with you getting scratched and petted. When he's not being the center of attention, he enjoys a nice walk or run.

Meet Comet - Comet is your every day athlete. He loves to run and is always on the move. He's the type that could be in the field all day hunting, then go home and play ball with you or your kiddos.

Meet Donner - Donner is a super spunky, happy-go-lucky guy. He wants to be your center of attention and your number one. He wants to please and loves learning new things. He's very inquisitive and interested in everything you're doing.

While he's a phenomenal working dog with a lot of try, he is also great in the house and has a wonderful off switch.

Just wanted to update everyone on all we've had going on here at Blue Badger Labs.

Nitro competed in dock diving, obedience and rally last weekend. He earned legs towards obedience and rally titles. He also earned his Dock Master Advanced title and earned invites to the Eukanuba National Championships for dock diving for Air Retrieve and Distance jumping.

We hope to finish up Nitro's Intermediate Rally and Novice B Obedience titles in the next couple of months.

AKC Labrador Retriever puppies available out of titled and health tested parents. Puppies were born 10/29 and are ready to go home on Christmas eve.

I have two black females still available.

Sire is Blue Badgers Fast Car RN RATO AM DM CGC CGCA. Nitro's hips are OFA Good, his elbows are OFA normal, and he's clear for EIC, CNM, HNPK, PRA, and he doesn't carry dilute. Nitro is a very versatile dog and competes in a variety of dog sports. He's an all around athlete.

Dam is Blue Badgers Always In Tow DN. Reese's hips are OFA good, her elbows are OFA normal, and she's clear for EIC, CNM, HNPK, PRA, and she doesn't carry dilute. Reese is a very sweet and loving dog. While she enjoys competing in dog sports, she's also more than happy to smuggle up next to you.

The candy babies are 3 weeks old today. I've added a litter pan to their whelping box to make cleaning easier and streamline the potty training process for when they go to their new homes in 5 weeks. They're all growing well and are adorable little mushballs. In the next day or two, they'll be introdto puppy gruel!

BUT I DON'T WANT A SHOW DOG!

Why do people recommend choosing a breeder who shows their dogs to folks who are just looking for a pet and have no interest in showing? Why should breeding to breed standard be important to a pet home? Does it seem excessive, or “snobby”?
It’s not, and here’s why.

Dog shows are a means of evaluating dogs against the breed standard, to evaluate soundness, movement/gait, type, and temperament.

Soundness: The state of physical and mental health when all organs and faculties are functioning properly, each in its rightful relation to each other.

Type: Breed type encompasses appearance, character, condition, bone structure, temperament, and movement; "breed type is all these things." Breed type also includes a character specific to each breed, a combination of behavior, temperament and carriage that demonstrate an essence of the breed.

Gait: The gait of a dog is its quality of movement. You want to see ease of movement, unimpaired by illness or poor structure.

Temperament: The general attitude a dog has towards other animals and people. From the Labrador Breed Standard "True Labrador Retriever temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the “otter” tail. The ideal disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog. Aggressiveness towards humans or other animals, or any evidence of shyness in an adult should be severely penalized."

So. That’s a very basic intro to what goes on at a show... why does this matter? You want a pet, a companion, not a show dog, right? Well, you chose a Labrador for a reason. You’ve done your research, and have read that they’re great with kids and other animals, they’re gentle, not aggressive, they make excellent companions and love spending time with their people. That their good and kind nature predisposes many Labradors to be excellent therapy dogs. Good, responsible breeders seek to preserve those definitive and positive characteristics.

What about type and structure? How the dog is put together, able to move freely and comfortably? Would you rather buy from someone who has proven publicly, over time, that the dog they’re breeding can move well, free of limp, or a structural problem? Or just trust someone who has no interest in proving their dogs? It’s your puppy’s quality of life and comfort (as well as your wallet) that’s at stake.

Not every dog in a well-bred litter is going to be show quality- there will ALWAYS be pet-quality puppies. Well-bred, but maybe with a slight imperfection, and those are the puppies placed in pet homes. You don’t have to want a show-quality puppy to get a well-bred puppy!

This is not about being snobby, being elitist, thinking that one dog is “better” than another, it’s about ensuring you get a puppy that acts and looks like the breed you fell in love with. It’s about ensuring that all puppies have the best start in life, and will grow into a loving family member. It’s about loving our breed enough to want to see everything that’s good about them preserved for future generations to enjoy. If you want a healthy dog, with a properly sweet temperament, choose your breeder wisely!

96 puppy nails trimmed, 6 puppies dewormed, 6 collars loosened, 1 whelping box cleaned, 1 whelping box expanded so mama has a getaway and pups have more room. In a day or two we'll add a litter pan to start potty training the pups. This morning was productive!

ATTENTION PREVIOUS PUPPY BUYERS!!!

I got a call from AKC Reunite that a puppy I microchipped has been found in Cheyenne. The microchip has never been registered in the new owner's name, so they called me. I'll be picking the pup up today and contacting the owners to return it.

It's super important you register your puppy's microchip in your name so the proper people can get a hold of you if your pup were to ever go missing! If you haven't registered yours yet, please do so!

Talk about a dog that isn't nervy! This is our pick that we're keeping from this litter. This was her first time at a livestock auction. Kids came to play with her, livestock came up to the rail, there were many smells, loud noises, scary things. She wasn't scared once and the parts of the day where people weren't loving all over her, she spent sitting next to me contently without a peep. I have five more just like her available!
