Looking for paid help here at the rescue (Acworth GA). Must be able to work weekends - anywhere from 3-6 hours each day. My current helper has baby sitter issues and is unable to definitely work on weekends any more.

Last week 7 1/2 year old Zane was put down. For three weeks I said it needs to be done. I did what I tell everyone not to do - waited until it was good for me and not the ferret.

I knew Zane was going downhill. He was still eating soup, but mainly slept and went potty when not eating. He would carry a toy to his bag. I knew his heart was wearing out. His teeth were bad, which was causing him discomfort.

The morning he was taken to the vet, he made a whimpering sound when urinating. When I picked him up, he made sounds of discomfort. I waited too long and he was in pain and now I feel guilt.

So many people do the same with a pet. They wait until the ferret's in actual pain, rather than noting the signs of discomfort along the way and putting the ferret down before it gets to the point of showing pain. We all know ferrets cover signs of pain very well and have been in pain for a while before actually showing it.

EUTHANIZATION - WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME?
One of the most difficult decisions we have to make is - when is it time to put our pets down? These are things I use to decide –
Is the animal in pain or discomfort that can't be controlled? No animal wants to live in pain or discomfort.

Is there any real quality of life left? Does the pet consistently play and interact with you still (for more than just a few minutes a day)? If the pet's just eating, sleeping, and pooping and maybe interacting just a little, it's time.

Is it probable the pet's going to have a seizure, pain or emergency during a time when you can't get to a vet? You don't want to have your ferret going through this when you're frantically calling around to find a vet or worse, let it die in pain because you couldn’t find a vet.

Is the ferret struggling with sickness that's worsening and can't get better? If the ferret's experiencing frequent discomfort, disorientation, inability to function, or lack of appetite from sickness that's not going to get better, please consider what it's having to live with. Sometimes the body gives out before the brain and you have to make the decision that it's too much for the ferret to continue to bear.

As humans, we have a tendency to postpone the inevitable because we can't bear the thought of putting our pet down. We have to go through the pain one way or the other. Sometimes we make our pet live longer than it wants or needs to because we can't make this tough decision. You’re making it difficult on yourself because you’re grieving for the days leading up to the decision, rather than just grieving once the pet is finally put to peace. Think of it in terms of the pet, not yourself.

(Update: Katie Terino has offered to donate fuel $ to driver(s))

New York 🚘 Transporter(s)/person(s) to make an adoption possible- kindly requested! If anyone wants to volunteer!
🚗 Flushing—> East Rochester 🚙
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is no short journey but it would be for 2 senior, lonely, female ferrets to become sisters(they’ve both lost their bonded buddies). This is a confirmed adoption between all three parties involved.
We as a community I believe can manifest joining together these two sweet creatures… anyone able?
The adoptable is stationed at Furever Ferrets Sanctuary and was “brought back to life” by its operator Dawn and adopter has a (safe)free-roaming, comfortable, and attentive home situation & very experienced and capable of caring for this senior. There are very few people looking for seniors but they(along with shelter) has their heart open for bringing these little ones to be a pair that they both trust to be compatible.
Anyone(s) interested in making this little meant-to-be uniting possible?!
