Know why white cats are special? Only about 5% of cats have solid white fur. Some people think white cats are prone to deafness...that's only partly true. Less than 20% of white cats are deaf - IF they don't have blue eyes. This beauty in the picture may be one of the 40% with one blue eye that is deaf. But white cats with two blue eyes are 65-80% likely to be deaf. And what about those different-colored eyes? That's called heterochromia. About 1 in 1000 cats have this - most of them are white. Many people perceive white cats as being more shy and quiet than other cats, though there is no actual proof of this. Although, remember if you're adopting one with blue eyes and they are timid...maybe it's because they can't hear! Have their hearing checked by your vet. With a little extra consideration, deaf cats can live long, happy, healthy lives!

Fun fact: Cats go into heat sooner than dogs. The age you spay your dog might be too late for your cat. Cats can go into heat as soon as four months vs. an average of 9 months for dogs.

Can you believe this is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day 2024 and this is the same post from last year of QTK's Bayshore? She wants to know why no one has appreciated her enough to adopt her. She is soooo sweet...we just don't understand why she hasn't found her FURever home yet. Bayshore is 3 years old, gentle, cuddly, and ok with other cats and even dogs. At what age should kittens be spayed and neutered? The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says no later than 5 months - and we agree!

We teach our vet students to spay and neuter at around 8 weeks/2 pounds. That assures they will never contribute to the overpopulation of cats,

The AVMA endorses the consensus document put forth by the Veterinary Task Force on Feline Sterilization for Age of Spay and Neuter Surgery, which recommends cats not intended for breeding be gonadectomized by five months of age. One of the things we hear most often is, "I could never foster, because I would end up keeping her!" Well, maybe or maybe not, depending on the bond you develop (or don't develop). We've all heard the term "foster fail." Here at QTK, we don't believe in foster fails - we believe in foster wins! If you develop that unbreakable bond, ADOPT! If you don't, you've helped that cat on their path to developing that bond with someone who will be their PURRfect match!

Luna is back at QTK for a THIRD time, through no fault of her own. Her previous humans fell on bad luck/bad times and had to give her up. She is the PURRfect cat! We have to tell you - she will be a hard one to give up! But we know you can do it! Or....not? 😸Either way, it's a win-win!

National Craft for Your Local Shelters Day is celebrated on July 21 every year. Calling all crafters, DIYers, and anybody searching for a low-cost method to help shelter (& RESCUE) pets on this day! This fun holiday idea is simple — to make some homemade pet toys and supplies and donate them to your local animal shelter or rescue. The animals receive the materials they require while also allowing individuals to contribute without having to spend a lot of money.
