Hands down-both our FAVORITE and LEAST FAVORITE animal on the ranch. They are the most entertaining to watch, curious, and adorable. They are also the most destructive, annoying, and difficult.

It’s a love hate relationship but today I was feeling the love so I got some good pics… and pork is delicious so that’s another reason we love our piggies!

Happy Father’s Day! Here’s a throwback to Paul’s first bow deer circa 2006. Good quality father son time is always spent hunting or fishing 🦌🎣

Now that we raise all our own livestock, deer hunting isn’t quite as enticing but there will always still be the annual fishing trips to enjoy.

The regenerative ag community is in mourning after the sudden loss of one of the humble leaders in the field.

David, your easy-going, kind, and caring personality will be deeply, deeply missed. We hope that you are now at peace with your wife and send our condolences to the rest of the family.

We are heartbroken to learn of SHA co-founder and first SHA President David Brandt's recent passing. David's passion for helping farmers learn about soil health and for just helping farmers in general was inspiring. We were so blessed to be able to call him a friend and mentor. He was a caring, compassionate man who would call out of the blue just to see how you are doing and catch up on life. I will miss those calls and miss the ability to pick up the phone and ask for advice. I'm comforted in knowing that he is reunited with his beloved Kendra and they are no longer burdened by earthly disease and pain. I wish I would have known that this was the last "ya' know" I would hear. Jay Brandt and family, David will live on in our hearts and in all the knowledge we will pass on from the lessons and stories he shared.

✔️Pullets (young hens) have arrived and are happily adjusting to the eggmobiles

✔️The 2023 Spring Great Chicken Roundup happened a couple of weeks ago which means all of our older hens have made it out on pasture.

(This usually involves a cold beverage or two as a warm-up 🤣🤣 )

Thankfully we were able to recruit some friends to help us gather the chickens at nighttime when they’re roosting!

✔️ Egg Shipping Bundles are now available for the summer season. (Link in bio)

For those of you who continuously buy eggs from us year round, you can look forward to brighter and deeper orange yolks as the hens enjoy their summer diet of insects, grasses and forbs!

Last week was a busy week! We’re grateful for getting the garden seeded, strawberry transplants planted, and waterline strung before the big ⛈️!

This is year two of seeding the main section of the garden with our no-till drill. We alternated with the peas, sweet corn, and beans from and a mix of oats, barley, hairy vetch, radish, sunflower, cucumber, buckwheat, a few watermelon and spaghetti squash for a cover crop (we basically threw in all of our old, unused seeds as an experiment- we’re curious to see what will come up!)

It’s a little tricky getting the spacing right but we’re hoping it’ll turn out decent. We’ll see 🤔

Happy Earth 🌎 Day everyone!!

Here’s a photo to remind you of the difference that good soil can make!

Some of our friends gave our soil probiotic a trial run and so far so good with the seed starts.

Both plants in the photo were planted on the same day in the same place with same amount of water and sunshine. The larger one took longer to sprout but once it did, it’s grown roughly 4 times as fast.

For all you up in the northern plains, seed starts are a great way to get your hands in the soil before it’s possible to start planting outside.

Dutch Baby Pancakes for Easter Brunch 🌻✨🐰

Gotta love those meals where you set out to make something “real quick” and then 3 hrs later you’re finally sitting down to eat your masterpiece!

These are a real simple combo of eggs, flour, salt, and butter for the baby plus some fresh herbs, garlic and Parmesan cheese on top— then whatever combo you want for the toppings. (Just look up a recipe online) Go hog wild!!

We did 3 savory variations:
1. Greek Baby (ft. lamb gyro meat and homemade basil cheese sauce)
2. Canadian Baby (ft. Canadian bacon and pasta sauce)
3. Mexican Baby (ft. Chorizo and chimichurri sauce)

Which one do you want to try??

04/01/2023

Well, as you all know by now, this winter’s been a long and tough one. (See our previous post about the challenges we’ve had with getting to our hay). A few days ago, we made the executive decision to sell our cows and trade them for the new and upcoming trend: Plant Based Meat!

See photo #1, our cattle leaving the yard
See photo #2, A semi load [of cattle] pulling back up into the yard.

April Fools! Funny thing is that our cattle actually ARE plant-based. They have a 100% vegetarian diet (thankfully, so we don’t have to be!) and thrive off of plants all year long.

Believe it or not, not all cattle are 100% plant-based. Products like blood and blood products (ie. blood meal), gelatin, and tallow are still legal to be fed in feedlots and are commonly used. So are feather and fish meal.

Bone meal also used to be allowed in ruminant feed until BSE became a public health issue in the US and it was banned by the FDA as a feed source.

These additives are also common in the dairy industry and fed to dairy cows to improve performance and milk production.

This is why it’s important to know your farmer/rancher and get your protein from a trusted source. Ruminants were not meant to eat animal by-products and these are simply used as a cheaper way to fatten cattle as quickly as possible for economic gain. Even though our cattle take much longer to finish, they live a longer and healthier life and we will always guarantee to raise 100% plant based beef! !

Who’s ready to get their hands back into the soil ?? We can’t wait for this snow to melt so we can get on with spring already.

We would like to share the challenge we’ve had with bale grazing this year due to the outrageous amount of snow we’ve gotten.

So actually getting to the bales has been a real problem. We have about 100 bales sitting out on the pasture just south of our yard that we (or the cattle) haven’t been able to get to because of too much snow. (See photo that Ryan, our cattle manager, posted last week).

We are having to get creative so we don’t run out of hay while there’s still too much snow for the cattle to graze without any supplementation.

We’ve considered:
➡️renting an excavator (way too expensive)
➡️buying hay (not ideal for cash flow and we can’t get a semi up our driveway where the cows are bc of snow)
➡️ rent a snowmobile with packer attachment and pack the snow enough the cattle can walk on (not sure this would actually work)
➡️rent a snowblower to make a path to all the bales (one windy day could blow all the snow back into our paths)
➡️resurrect enough bales to feed our way to the bales. Going slow and steady to feed just enough that the cows and trample their way bit by bit to the remaining bales that are out there.

We’re trying the resurrection method! We’ll let you all know how it goes!

One of the conversations we recently had with another producer that we were looking for a potential partnership with.. needless to say the conversation ended here.

We’re not sure what to say about this other than it’s really unfortunate to know that there are people out there totally bastardizing the word “regenerative”, specifically related to ag.

I’ve come up with my own definition of regenerative agriculture over the years and this is what I usually tell people:

“Regenerative agriculture uses the principles of nature to create an ecosystem within all the different enterprises on your farm or ranch.”

It’s cool that the new Tier 5 certification we’ve received uses many of the same concepts for their certification process.

The Regenified certification is a comprehensive system that guarantees each member of its program is making progress on:

🌱 6 Principles [of soil health]
🌱 3 Rules of [Compounding, Diversity, and Disruption]
🌱 4 Processes [of Ecosystems]

To learn more about the Regenified certification, you can follow the link in our bio!

The amount of snow out there this winter has made it difficult to maneuver at times.

Needless to say our poly wire fences are easy to string with the right tools in even the harshest conditions.

This year’s favorite new tool: SHOWSHOES! 🎿

No more falling through snow banks with these bad boys. Job well done!

PRO-TIP: set your temporary posts in the fall, before the ground freezes. That way in the middle of winter, all you have to do is string the wire.

Collecting samples for a research trial and the cattle wanted to know what Paul was up to!

Out on the native rangeland this time of year (after the frost), the cattle were mainly interested in blue grama, green needle grass, Kentucky blue, and the tippy tops of Russian olive branches!

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born and raised in Bismarck and moved to our present location just east of Bismarck in 1983.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I farm and ranch and am owner of a regenerative agriculture consulting company. I also founded a non-profit that focuses on educating farmers and ranchers as to regenerative agriculture.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU'VE FACED IN YOUR JOURNEY, SO FAR?
From 1995-1998 we lost our crops to hail (3 years) and drought (one year). It was extremely difficult to continue farming but it ended up being absolutely the best thing that could have happened to us as it forced me to learn how to farm and ranch regeneratively.

WHAT IST HE MOST GRATIFYING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?
I get the most gratification when I hear from others as to how much more enjoyable and profitable it is for them to farm and ranch with nature instead of against her.

WHY BISMARCK-MANDAN?
I now travel extensively, spending over 275 days a year traveling around the world and there is absolutely no better place than Bismarck-Mandan. The people and the 4 seasons cannot be beat!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE THEIR MARK HERE?
If you have the work ethic that is common amongst North Dakotans, there is absolutely nothing that you cannot accomplish in this state.

We’re happy to share about the research teams that have come out so far this summer to gather samples of data for results that will help move the regenerative ag movement forward.
🔬
Dr. Stephan Van Vliet and his team are working on a project that will further show the correlations between soil health, plant health, and animal health resulting in better meat quality.
🔬
Dr. Jonathan Lungren and his team are looking at soil health and the outcomes of various perennial wheat varieties throughout the growing season.
🔬
We’re excited about the work that they’re doing and are always happy to invite them onto our ranch!
🔬
To some of us, using the principles of nature to grow nutrient dense food just makes sense. To others, it takes numerous studies PROVING the benefits and years of convincing that this is a viable way of producing food for future generations.

Yes, PERENNIAL. While out checking fields this weekend, we stopped and got some photos of the aggregates on the perennial wheat roots.
