🐾 Meet Miss Roxy! 🐾
Roxy visited us yesterday for her semi-annual health check-up. Her annual screening lab profile uncovered a mildly abnormal kidney marker. While this is hopefully just a temporary fluctuation, we may be catching kidney disease in a very early stage. Roxy's case highlights the importance of regular screening lab work, even when our patients are young and apparently healthy.
What's next for Roxy? We’ll be checking a urine sample to look for any additional signs of kidney dysfunction and plan to recheck her kidney values in 2-3 weeks to monitor her progress over time.
Routine screenings like these are crucial for catching potential issues early, when we can best address them! 🐶💕

🐾 Debunking Common Myths About Puppy Care 🐾
🐶 Myth 1: Puppies should not leave the house until they are fully vaccinated.
The critical socialization period for puppies occurs from about three weeks to 14 weeks of age. This is a time in a dog’s life when they learn what is safe in their environment. They are also learning “doggie” social skills and what it means to live in the human world. Vaccinations are administered every three to four weeks until at least 15-16 weeks of age, which marks the end of this critical timeframe. If you wait until your puppy has received all vaccinations before exposing them to the world, your puppy may become more fearful as an adult and lack the necessary coping skills to live in the human world.
🐶 Is Your Senior Dog Showing Signs of Aging? Here's What You Need to Know About Metabolic Dysfunction 🐾
As our furry friends grow older, their bodies undergo various changes that can impact their health. One important cause of aging in dogs is metabolic dysfunction, or changes in energy and fat metabolism, just like in humans.
Here’s a quick rundown on what happens:
1. Insulin Resistance: Older dogs may have increasing insulin levels and reduced sensitivity to insulin, which may lead to muscle weakness, increased risk of cancer, worsened chronic inflammation, and fatty accumulations in sensitive tissues.
2. Adipose Tissue Dysfunction and Redistribution: In many species, aging is associated with fat shifting from a more benign layer under the skin to more problematic abdominal fat. Increased visceral fat is associated with increased blood lipids (fats), insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, muscle weakness, and several age-related diseases.
3. Dyslipidemia: Changes in blood lipids in older dogs are similar to changes seen in aging humans. In dogs, these changes appear to be associated with insulin resistance and disease with the pancreas, liver, and eyes.
We’re excited about advancing research into this important aspect of canine aging, which is why we've partnered with the biotech company Loyal for a clinical trial to see if a new medication can help slow these changes in our senior dogs. This 4-year long trial will provide a wealth of knowledge about metabolic changes in aging dogs, and hopefully will result in an FDA-approved medication that can extend livespan and healthspan in older dogs!

Let’s keep our senior pups happy and healthy! 🐕❤️

Ear mites! Gross!!!
We find ear mites on a lot of animals that are rescued from outdoors, indoor/outdoor pets that are not on parasite prevention, and feral cats as well. However, they can be shared with your indoor-only pets…and even you and your human family! 😵
Year-round parasite prevention for your furry family members is the best way to keep these nasty bugs out of your home. 😷
