No hoof, no horse! Thank you to all of the farriers that work tirelessly at perfecting their craft.

It's National Farriers Week! Let's celebrate the hard work that our farriers put in daily to partner with equine veterinarians and ensure the health and well-being of our horses. Proper hoof care is essential for a sound and happy horse, so it goes without saying that a skilled farrier is both a necessity and a tremendous asset.

Don't forget to give a shoutout to your farriers this week and show them your appreciation for their dedication to their craft!

Fireworks season is upon us! While it is fun for many of us to celebrate, we know it can be a stressful time for our horses. Here are some tips to keep your equine friends safe during the festivities:
• Be aware of scheduled fireworks in your area and kindly ask your neighbors to give you some notice if they are planning to use fireworks.
• If possible, keep your horses inside. If your horses are staying out, check their paddock or pasture for any hazards that could lead to injury if they spook or run.
• Drown out some of the loud noises with a radio or fans, and leave the lights on to help lessen the effect of the bright flashes.
• If you are really worried about your horse's safety or are unsure, contact us about calming agents and sedatives.

We want to write and let our clients in Long Island know that we will be sharing weekend emergency coverage with Miller & Associates. We do this to ensure a reliable, high standard of medical care across the island for our patients. This will be especially helpful as we enter the summer show season, and Long Island summer traffic!

Thank you for understanding that our Long Island veterinarians are 100% committed to your horses during the week, and this will allow doctors of both practices the time needed to rest and recharge.

As always, if you are ever in need of a veterinarian in the off hours, please dial 203-733-0789 ext 0 and you will be directed to the doctor on call.

One of the best parts of our School Horse Initiative is receiving the stories with each nomination. Our favorite one this year is for Deluxe Chex Account "Arnold":

If Arnold ran away and was a wanted man, this is what the poster would read:

WANTED for the high crime of stealing Minty Muffins:
20 year old chestnut gelding
Very handsome but slightly chunky
Has an attitude but tolerated children
Will come running for treats
Fugitive is dangerous - may bite other horses if you get too close

But seriously, Arnold has been teaching kids and adults to ride since he retired from showing. He’s the best combination of smart enough to make you learn, but safe enough to trust with new riders. Give any lesson kind their choice of who they want to ride at MCPH, and the answer is always “Arnold!”

What would your horse's WANTED poster say?

This is the last call for nominations, we will be drawing the names of the recipients tomorrow!

Congratulations to Dr. Nicole Zitzmann for earning her certification in equine chiropractic! To schedule a chiropractic appointment for your horse on Long Island contact us at 203-733-0789 or message us.

02/10/2024

We are accepting nominations for our annual school horse contest! National School Horse Day has been founded by Grand Prix Equine to honor horses in riding programs whose purpose is to develop and perfect a rider’s skill set. These special animals have the kindest hearts and take excellent care of their riders under the expertise of a trainer. School horses are the foundation of all riding programs; our industry would suffer greatly without them.

This year, we are gifting financial support to five notable school horses or ponies and are seeking nominations from you to make the best choice. We will provide $500 for each horse as a small token of our appreciation for these noble steeds. The winners will be selected in a live drawing on March 1st.

To nominate your favorite school horse, send a photo(s) to [email protected] with the following information:
• Horse’s name
• Name of farm or riding program and address (where would we mail/drop off the prize)
• Horse owner’s name, phone number and/or email (how can we contact them if their horse is a winner)
• A brief description of why you are nominating this horse or pony

Rules:
1. Horses nominated must be currently active in a school horse program.
2. All of the information above is required for a nomination to be accepted.
3. Only one horse per owner/riding program will be accepted. If multiple horses are nominated from the same program, we will enter the one with the most nominations or the one that was entered first.
4. Nominations will be accepted until 2/29/23.
5. Winners will be chosen by random selection on National School Horse Day March 1, 2023 and owners will be contacted to arrange prize distribution.

Please share and spread your love for your favorite school horses on March 1st using
