Okay! Round 2 with “Jackson” and his fence fighting and how we handle it.

08/22/2024

We’re in Methuen, MA helping “Jackson” (Aruba Cunucu) who struggles with reactivity and recently had some major fights with his brother “Murphy” (Aruba Cunucu)

We’re starting this LIVE with Jackson off - leash because he’s newly e-collar trained and he has a habit of being aggressive at the fence. We’re going to help change that today!

“Never Surrender”
A brief advocation for your dog.

This isn’t an individual abuse problem. This is a cultural abuse problem. And it didn’t start with dogs being abandoned on the side of the highway. It’s started with the romanticizing of dog ownership and the lacking responsibility and commitment to match.

Many will see this picture of a young GSD chained to the side of the highway here in Connecticut and immediately rage about the person who did this. Never looking at the bigger issue. And no. It’s not neutering and spaying. I can assure you this young pure bred GSD came from a breeder.

Anyone who’s ever dropped off their dog to the local pound, animal shelter, or even in certain scenarios, re-homes their dog unnecessarily is almost as bad as this person.

Let me explain.

We live in a world of narcissists obsessed with consumerism. Dogs have become a victim to this addiction. Dog were never meant to be companions. Dogs came from the woods and we took them to work beside us. We’ve since taken away the work part and there’s a hole in their existence.

Compannionship. That word has been used to romanticize what we’ve done but the truth is that the idea the dogs best life is as our comfort thing is a harsh reality for dogs. We aren’t the best thing they could possible have. Peace and well-being are far more important.

Imagine the empty soda cans thrown everywhere in the world. Someone who loves their Coca-Cola would surely not throw away a full can of their favorite sugar and caffeine concoction. But what about after the fix has been fixed and the soda is gone, or if it had a hole and spoiled, or if it was flat or warm and a bug flew in it? Get rid of it obviously.

If you threw your empty can by the river at a state park, everyone who saw it would scoff at the person who must have done that (all while walking by not helping to pick it up) in an effort to remind themselves how good they are and would never do such a thing. But there are state employees that clean state parks and the can will likely be picked up. The chances that can will disintegrate into the soil (which would mean it sat there for years and years) is very small. So what’s the issue? It’s a lack of responsibility. The fact is that if you throw you can into garbage at a gas station but miss and walk away leaving the can next to the garbage, you’re as bad as the person who dropped the can next to the river. But we don’t look at those the same do we?

What’s the point? Don’t exemplify the photo above as to deem yourself better but not take an honest look at yourself as a dog owner.

The owner of the GSD puppy gave up. I’ll tell you exactly what happened.

The owner got a German Shepherd puppy from a breeder. They didn’t use a crate or work with the dog or help the dog adjust to human life.

The puppy barked at night, peed on the floor, chewed the couch and nipped at the kids. This went on for 4-6 weeks. The soda got flat and the owners threw the can by the river.

3.9 MILLION owners “responsibly” surrender, re-home or find a rescue or shelter for their dog per year in the US. That’s 3.8999 million who would NEVER tie their dog to the guard rail on RT8 but the fact is that they’re all the same. The fate of these dogs gets dramatically more dim when you toss them away and onto someone else, even worst - no one else.

When you give up on your puppy that you failed, and drop them at the shelter, you threw your can near the garbage. When you tied your puppy to the side of the route 8 in CT, you threw your can by the river. I don’t look at those much different. One just makes for a more dramatic photo for a news story.

What’s the solution? Stop ROMANTICIZING dog ownership. Dogs aren’t for everyone. Every breed isn’t for every home. Every dog isn’t for kids. Every dog isn’t for apartments. Every dog isn’t for busy households. Every dog isn’t easy or quiet or clean or healthy or genetically stable. Every dog doesn’t want to make friends with other dogs. Every dog isn’t going to fit your idealistic imagine of what a dog is.

To say “Dogs are a responsibility” is a gross understatement. Dogs are a living creature deserving of a quality of life only found/created when they have a chance to grow and develop in the place they start their journey with humans and have consistency, structure, causation, peace, expectations, trust and health.

THE WAY OUT IS THROUGH.
Work through your issues with your dog. Don’t go around the problem until you can’t anymore and convince yourself the only way out is to surrender and throw in the towel.

I know the puppy is waking up the baby.

I know the puppy chewed your wife’s favorite shoes.

I know the puppy chewed the leash in half.

I know the puppy is hell on wheels once you go for a walk.

I know the puppy nipped your 1 year old daughter.

I know the puppy dug up your garden.

The way out of these struggles is to get through them. There’s trainers for that. Online resources. YouTube. Not euthanasia. Not surrender. Not medication.

Effort and patience and commitment.

I’m headed to a session in New Jersey and when I called my first client to ask them to put the dogs in the crate she said “I can’t guarantee that they will go in it”. There’s a lot of information in that.
