Leakage in Ayam Cemanis
Or
Hormonal Flushing?

Many people are quick to cull or rehome their Ayams at the first sign of leakage. While true leakage is a reason to cull, you might want to wait a bit to see if your Ayam Roo is simply experiencing hormonal flushing.
Here’s what folks at Sage Acres Farm have to say about the topic.

A caveat to Mulberry is hormonal flushing. A two copy rooster can display a hormonal flushing in the upper neck and lower waddles when experiencing their first higher rush of adult hormones typically around 6-8 months old. The coloration should fade back into a dark black after the hormones regulate. If they don’t go dark you may be looking at a single copy bird (cull). Hens do not display any type of hormonal flushing and should never be anything but black as they display the easiest. Cull any hens that show any red.

Additionally, although many backyard breeders do not like the idea of culling, it is important to know that it is necessary to keep the integrity of the breed pure.

This breed is extraordinary in appearance and temperament. Adult hens are excellent egg layers. Our birds are hatched and raised indoors.
Hatchlings are almost always a fluffy yellow, but as they age and their white feathers grow out and their spots begin to show. By 3-4 weeks old you will know if their beaks, combs, and legs will be dark.

We are blessed with access to a vet who sees chickens and we also have a access to a chicken whisperer, but most folks do not want to pay for OR maybe you cannot afford vet care OR maybe you choose to not take a farm animal to a vet. Whatever your situation, having a First Aid Kit on hand can be a lifesaver for your flock.
