Leo will remain deep within my heart forever. I loved him more then I have ever loved anything or anyone. May Spirit allow us to keep shining his loving bright light so that I may help heal the health of other cats. No one should be murdered by the food they eat. Leo first got ill in February 2007. I took him to an emergency clinic and was told he was dying. I couldn't believe it. From there we we

nt to a specialty hospital where he was put on IV for several days. More in depth tests were done. No good news. I got an emergency call from the head vet at that hospital advising me to transport him to UC Davis hemodialysis unit in San Diego ASAP. I picked Leo up at 4:30 am and headed for San Diego. The two doctors at UCD, Dr Julie Fischer and Dr Sheri Ross explained to me that he would require dialysis at least twice a week for an unknown period of time to try and recover some kidney function. If he could recover some function he might survive. The plan was to do some minor tests that day and put Leo on the machine the next day. At approximately 8pm I got a call from Dr Fischer telling me that Leo had crashed. They couldn't wait until the next day to get him on the machine. She would call when he was off the machine. At 12:15 am Dr Fischer called to say that Leo was off the machine and resting well. He had been over hydrated which caused his heart to fill with fluid. They had removed an unbelievable amount of fluid. His heart went back to normal size and he was doing great. For the next 3 months I took him twice a week for dialysis. A 160 mile round trip. He did not recover any kidney function. He had a feeding tube inserted in an effort to get his weight back up and get him stabilized for the next step in this journey. A kidney transplant. An echo-cardiogram was done to clear him for surgery. He passed it. Now a surgeon and donor needed to be found. A surgeon was located. The search for a compatible donor was to begin. During this whole time, Leo continued to have twice weekly dialysis. The last several times weird things started happening. New twitches and unexplainable near seizures. All can be side effects of long term dialysis. About two weeks out from surgery, I went, on a Thursday afternoon after work, to pick up my beautiful boy. About half way home his breathing got shallow and fast. I called and talked to Dr Ross. The next morning Leo was back at UC Davis. X-rays were taken and meds given to ease his breathing. It didn't help him. Dr Ross came back to the exam room with tears streaming down her face. The x-ray showed the left side of Leo's heart was enlarged. Congestive heart failure. He was disqualified from surgery. He would not survive it even if we got the heart back to normal again. Leo the Lion Grrrr (Dr Ross's pet name for him) was allowed to go to his favorite spot. The laundry basket in the corner of the dialysis lab. He curled up there with his head in the palm of my hand. His purrs filled the room to spite the fact that he could barely breath. The shot was given and the room fell absolutely silent. My boy, my beautiful Leo man, passed from this life. He took the biggest part of my heart with him. I will never forget that commercial cat food companies killed the love of my life. It is because of that, that Leo Feline Foundation has come to be.

Coyote jumped a 10 foot fence to snatched Tommy Lee's little dog with Brittney sitting right there. Pup got lucky this time.

Animal cruelty and domestic violence are on my mind tonight. I've dealt with this crap literally my whole life. It's heartbreaking for everyone it touches. In this situation someone got mad and made the choice to do harm. As a result, one innocent life was lost and another hangs on the edge. It's not OK. If you are so pathetic and weak that the only thing you can do is hurt an animal then please stop and redirect your rage to where it belongs ... on you.

These two beautiful souls rejoined their Spirit tribe of cats today. They were together every single day of their lives for the past 16 years. Nicky was a gift to my friend Chris Hill when he was just a tiny baby. Abigail joined the family soon after. Nicky (bengal) developed inoperable cancer on the right side of his face in the past few months . As it progressed and neared the end, Abigail suddenly developed liver disease of an unknown origin. Guess she didn't want to be here without him. They were deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

I'm feeling really sick over all the posts I'm seeing about cats and dogs dying suddenly from eating a certain brand of commercial pet food. This is EXACTLY how it happened in 2007. Menu Foods who manufactured 150 different brands of pet food got wheat gluten that was tainted with melamine. Well over 10000 ( I'm sure there were many more that weren't reported) animals died before any recall was issued. It caused vomiting, diarrhea, and ultimately sudden and severe kidney failure.

This is what killed Leo at only 3 years old. May 15, 2007. Worst day of my life. That is why Leo Feline Foundation even exists.

I don't know what to even do right now but something had to happen and fast.

Two of my medically challenged friends.

Roscoe was an abandoned sick baby when he came here. He ended up with FIP at a very very young age. Treatment was hard for him because his tender baby skin could not tolerate the shots. He was paralyzed on his front legs for a while because it burned him so badly and deeply. He was switched to pills and slowly healed from FIP, lesions, and eventually paralysis. Today he is a big beautiful zoomie boy.

Johnny was a super sick kitten when he arrived also. He was found in the middle of a street walking in circles due to a severe ear infection. His eyes were wickedly infected and gooped shut too. And very scared. It has taken months to gain his trust as the infections left him deaf and 90% blind. He's finally coming out of his shell and learning to trust.

I am so happy to see these two boys thriving.

I'm undertaking a new venture to raise money for Leo Feline Foundation (LFF). I'm calling it "LFF Out Loud". We'll be offering handmade custom copper jewelry designed, created, and (so far) assembled by my most amazing VP. Everything is hand made by her so each piece is individual and unique.

She's trying to teach me the fine art of jewelry making. I'm not the most talented at this so we'll see how it goes. For today, we have 6 pair of Christmas dog earrings (pictures in comments). Yeah yeah I know it's a cat rescue. I'm working on those pics next and trying to figure out logistics and mailing options. Bare with me as I get this idea up and running.
