One of the reasons that the RVAA exists today is because we wanted to be able to help Brenda Jarvis and her cats. Very proud to say we have helped Brenda's cats from 2009 till now and will always be helping them money from the Thorpe's or not!!!

Does anyone out there know Beverly Elward Glover from Dixfield? If so could you ask her to contact Becky Eastman McDonald @ 207-357-2666 as soon as possible. I believe she has some information that could help Brenda Jarvis from Dixfield and would like to contact her, again, as soon as possible to help Brenda.

Such a GREAT day yesterday at the 3rd Annual Mountain Valley Stomp!!! All the bands were SOOO TALENTED. Everyone was so friendly and just enjoying the really wonderful music all afternoon. Even the pouring rain and leaking roof couldn't keep people from enjoying the day!!! The River Valley Animal Advocates received over $500 in donations as well as a huge pile of cat food, litter, and toys. Thank you all so much for choosing us as this years local nonprofit to benefit from their generosity. The RVAA is also sharing our blessings with Brenda Jarvis and the "Dixfield kitties".

Sorry we haven't been on this site for awhile as things have been so crazy this year. I can be contacted at 357-2666 for spay neuter information for cats only. Unfortunately we have a LONG waiting list right now for females especially. We have been behind since March of last year and it seems to be getting worse with a lot of veterinarians not doing spay/neuter. We are trying really hard to take care of as many cats as possible and at this point are really only doing females that have a male in the house or ferals. Males are a little easier to fit in and we have also been doing more of them that have a female in the house. I know all of the females are going into heat as the days get longer and we are doing our best to take care of everyone. I am sorry for the waits & I wish we could do more. As always we are committed to helping the cats and their owners/caretakers so please have patience with us during this difficult time.

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH TO THE RUMFORD POLICE DEPT. & SUE MILLIGAN (ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER FOR THE TOWN OF RUMFORD) for their aid with this cat (Mike) on Fri. 2/28/20. We were bringing Mike home from our spay/neuter clinic when he escaped from his carrier and bolted at the information booth in Rumford. An officer and volunteer responded immediately until Sue Milligan could get there with more volunteers. The officer was able to locate Mike and when Sue & her volunteers came they were able to herd Mike to a safe area. He was so scared and led them on quite a chase. It was dark and cold as everyone worked so hard trudging through the ice & snow and keeping him from further harm! As he had been neutered and had anesthetic that day he was at high risk in the cold. His human Dad was able to call him and finally pick him up and bring him home. Without the help of the ANIMAL ANGELS Mike would certainly have died that night. He is doing well and being spoiled by his family that loves him very much. The RVAA is so grateful to all of the ANIMAL ANGELS that help us with the animals!!!!

This is a picture of Splash (on left) and Max at our 10 year anniversary Annual Meeting held in October. Splash was a rescue from out of state that moved 100 miles per person on his long ride up to Maine to go to live with Tony & Donna Rowe in his forever home. He was the CUTEST puppy ever!!! He has had a medical emergency and surgery for a very serious condition. He is still at the clinic in Sanford but seems to be doing very well. The RVAA is asking for donations toward his huge medical bills. RVAA, PO Box 628, Canton, Maine 04221 and please mention Splash as the receipient. Thank you all and thank God for the WONDERFUL veterinarians & hospitals that do so much for animals today.

It is ALWAYS so nice to hear that one of the rescues has found their forever home !!! Would never have been possible without the Animal Angels out there and you are appreciated!!!

Thank you SOOO MUCH to the employees Helping Hands fund at the Oxford Federal Credit Union (Mexico branch) for their $100.00 donation to the River Valley Animal Advocates!!! They have all been so supportive to our group and have donated to us often. We truely couldn't continue with our spay/neuter (for cats) program without the support of the Animal Angels in our communities..

We were introduced to Mr. Roberts by the Animal Control Officer (Annne Simmons-Edmonds) in Dixfield in 2010 as well. We ended up making another wonderful friend with this sweet older man living alone with way too many kitties. From summer 2010 to summer 2011 we ended up spaying/neutering 41 cats or kittens. 26 of them were females and 15 males. Many returned to Mr. Roberts but many more were adopted by loving families. It proved to us that it was possible to do large scale projects and to succeed. Many thanks to the Bangor Savings Bank (Dixfield branch) for giving us $1000. back then from their Community Matters Program. It enabled us to do this rescue as well as Brenda's kitties in the same year. Mr. Roberts passed away winter before last as a result of a fire at his home. At the time of his death there were no cats left as he had lost his last one (Precious) in the fall before his death.

Another trip back in the history of the RVAA. In our founding year (2009) we were only able to help 2 cats with spay/neuter. In 2010 (as soon as funds allowed) we started on our 1st large scale feral colony. Brenda Jarvis of Dixfield was one of our founding members and served as Vice President up until 2015. She remains a treasured friend to the RVAA!!! As most people probably know Brenda & her sister Caddy Smith have taken care of cats in Dixfield for as long as anyone can remember!! One of the goals of the RVAA was to help feral cat colonies with spay/neuter to stop the constant kittens EVERY YEAR and Brenda's kitties were our 1st priority. Brenda actually built an outside cage that summer and we started live trapping cats at a couple of her sites in Dixfield. We started out with all the females and ended up (much later) with 100% sterilization. 14 cats 8 female & 6 males. Brenda worked her butt off getting them trapped as well as their aftercare. We had quite a few adventures trying to get them into carriers. They were almost all tigers. Some are still alive today as they have their ANIMAL ANGEL BRENDA to care for them Pictures of some of Brenda's kitties from 2010.

Today is the day!!! 10 years ago we had our founding meeting at Rowes Afternoon Delite with quite a number of animal lovers present to help us start our own local rescue group. What a lot of people don't know is that this meeting would never have taken place had it not been for Caryl McIntire Edwards & the Voice For Animals group. I (Becky McDonald) had joined the Voice group in fall of 2001 and had put out change cans for the Voice group locally. I was able to help a small number of local cats and the people that loved them with food and spay/neuter thanks to the Voice group. As it became obvious that we had a HUGE need locally for spay/neuter of cats especially, we needed to form a more local rescue group. When we filed the papers for our own 501(c)(3) the bill was paid with the change from the Voice group cans. The Voice group was also responsible for introduucing us to our HERO Dr Don McLean. He has worked on all 1500 cats that have been cared for with the River Valley Animal Advoates and is truely our Animal Angel. Thank you to all that have believed in us & supported the RVAA from our beginnings to now. The RVAA has been able to do SOOOO MUCH more than we ever thought possible in the beginning.

WE DID IT! I should say Dr. Don & Martha did it, as we were able to do our 1500th cat at the spay/neuter 10/11/2019. And, we were able to do it in time for our 10th Anniversary (10/24/2009 founding meeting). 705 females spayed/rabies shots, 702 males neutered/rabies shots, & 93 cats with other medical needs from 27 local towns. We are calling Oliver our 1500th as he is the very special kitten that came back this time for his first surgery to repair some very serious medical issues that he is facing.

Our 10 year anniversary is coming up Oct. 24, 2019 (the date of our founding meeting was 10/24/2009). This last spay/neuter brought us up to 1487 cats so far helped with spay/neuter/shots & other medical issues. We will be having another spay neuter this week and I am so much hoping that we can reach 1500 local cats before our anniversary!!!! This is so much more than we ever thought would be possible when the RVAA was founded and thank you to all you animal angels out there that have put your trust in us to have your kitties cared for.

This cat was found near Penobscot St. in Rumford. He is very friendly but looks very underfed. If this could be your kitty or if you could give him a place to live the River Valley Animal Advocates will gladly have him neutered and get his rabies shot at our next spay/neuter at no cost. Please call Heather 418-7538 if you think you know this kitty or can find it in your heart to help him.

Landmark day for Dr. Don & Martha's spay/neuter clinic! It was 12/11/2015 the 1st time they came to Canton to hold clinics. In that short 3 years we have held 30 clinics. 177 females were fixed, 194 males fixed, and 34 other cats have been seen for shots or other medical needs!!! The cumlitive total of unborn kittens is 5430 in just these 3 years (fiiguring it at 15 kittens per female per year) with a yearly total of 2655 less kittens. Hopefully when there are less of them they will be appreciated enough to all have homes and people that love them!
