Dog of the Day: Cotton! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾
Cotton is a sweet little 25lb, pint-sized girl who is great with kids and dogs. At just around a year old, Cotton has loved everyone she meets, including strangers, the vet, and the groomer! We have no idea why she came to us as a stray and was never claimed. Although she pretends to acts tough in her kennel (a good watch dog), this girl is an incredible lover who just wants to be in your lap. Cotton rides fantastic in the car; listening to country music as she looks out the window watching life go by. She likes to have a good time and will entertain you with her sillyness. We recently found out she loves to wade in the water: maybe a boating pal? Cotton continues to work on her leash training. Thankfully she strives to please and is a totally manageable size. If you are looking for a sweet, endearing, lap dog, Cotton is for you!.......

Today was a big afternoon for us! The fantastic kids from the Children's Garden Learning Center came out for a field trip and we had SO much fun! These kids are very well behaved and ask really great questions to learn about all of the animals.

Of course, our kitties were a big deal but we didn't have any small puppies this time so we decided on letting them meet Piper and Chester. Needless to say, the dogs were having fun and the kids got a chance to walk them around and play with them.

The kicker for today was their surprise to us! You see, these amazing kids worked very hard on a bake sale and wanted to donate their proceeds to us! We were overwhelmed with happiness and received a check for $500!!! Yes, $500 from their hard work and generosity. These kids are our future and we couldn't be more proud of every single one of them. Thank you to ALL of these beautiful young ones and also to their teachers at Children's Garden who help shape them into really great humans! 💚

This Saturday Night: Fireworks at the Fairgrounds!!! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾
Fireworks can be VERY distressing for pets. 1 in 5 pets goes missing during this time of year. Their hearing is 10x more than ours! We always feel for our shelter pets and want to help your pets too!
1. Never allow your pets near fireworks as they can easily become injured.
2. Make sure your pet has an ID tag and microchip with up-to-date information.
3. Keep a current photo of your pet handy in case they do get lost.
4. Keep pets INSIDE and secure so they can’t run away.
5. If you are going out, consider boarding your pet or taking extra steps to keep them secure.
6. Walk your dog early in the day BEFORE the festivities start.
7. Give your pet distractions such as toys, treats, and soothing music to drown out the noise.
8. Give your pet a safe place to hide in the home.
9. Consider buying soothing items such as a thunder shirt, pheromone sprays, or CBD oil to help calm your pet.
10. AND Consult your veterinarian for medication if your pet gets particularly frightened by fireworks and loud noises. To them, its like the world is ending!

Kitty of the Day: Sunny! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾
"Hi there, I'm Sunny, a charming ginger boy who came here in October. Some of the littles who visited here said I look just like a stuffed animal...so cute! I'm great with little ones 'cuz I'm like a cuddly rag doll when you pick me up--making me perfect for kiddos OR grandma or grandpa. And I love toys...especially the toy mouse, batting it around like a looney-tune! I'm a bundle of fun and overflowing with love, all wrapped up in one special package. Since I don't have a mean bone in my big ole body, I was bullied as a stray and got FIV. Please--- most cats with FIV have long and happy lives. My FIV+ buddy Binx was adopted, so I hope I'm next! If you want a big guy full of cuddles, fun and cuteness, I'm your man!

We want to clarify our earlier post regarding the cats who will be trapped tomorrow morning. First, we apologize for not explaining the entire situation. We have been short-staffed today and it has been a very difficult and busy day. We hurriedly put the post together, and should have taken the appropriate time needed to be clear.
• The traps will be set in the vicinity of Taggart Woods at 6am tomorrow. This neighborhood has been notified door-to-door by the police a week ago, and again by our Animal Control Officer, to keep all pet cats inside tomorrow morning. Our county has a leash law for BOTH cats and dogs, although many county citizens are either not aware of this or choose to ignore it. Sadly, Animal Control does not have the budget or staff to enforce the leash law in all 863 square miles of our county.
• Any cats that are trapped that have collars on them will be released. We have no interest in taking pets but please make sure they are kept inside.
• The roaming/colony cats trapped tomorrow will be examined by our veterinarians, as we do with ALL animals in our care. Cats that are deemed to be healthy will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered and re-homed in adoptove homes or barn homes, as is our practice.
• While we understand that some rescue organization’s policy is to return vetted/fixed cats back to their colony, our county ordinance does not allow cat colonies. As Animal Control, we are governed by, and must operate according to the authority and laws of the county and its municipalities.
• Regarding euthanasia. We will not, under any circumstances, euthanize a healthy animal, even upon the owner’s request. Nor do we euthanize animals to free up space. However, with the consultation of a veterinarian, ending the suffering of a seriously sick or injured animal with no acceptable quality of life may be the most humane option. Euthanasia may also be pursued in cases of irreparable animal aggression. For example, when a dog in our care is deemed vicious, unadoptable, dangerous to the staff and public safety cannot be reasonably assured. These are the difficult decisions we must make in Animal Control.

Please know we love animals. This is why we do what we do. We do not make the rules, but we must enforce them. Dog of the Day: Baxter! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾 Here 6 MONTHS!
Baxter came to us as a stray with his buddy Dodge back in January. Talk about a sweet guy! He is about one year old and has the most gorgeous brindle coat. Truly the best part of Baxter is his personality. When he arrived, this guy was happy and absolutely LOVED people. When in the play yard, all he wanted was to greet everyone and get as much lovin' as he can. Sadly, we've seen him decline in the last 6 months. He's in a funk. He needs more people time...volunteers to spend time with him and remind him that life can be fun and that people are good.
Baxter is gentle, playful and walks very well on a leash. AND, he seems to get along with other dogs---a meet and greet is always recommended with your own dogs. One caution: when this boy is left alone in our play yard, he IS escape artist, squeezing himself between the chainlink and boards at the bottom. The good news is he doesn't run away...instead he comes right to us OR to the door. Baxter will require a home that will train him to stay home and spend a lot of time with him. This is a dog who wants to be inside and part of the family. If you are looking for a sweet, young and smallish (40-45lb) pit, he is a perfect choice. You will have lots of fun and cuddles in your future!........

Ivan is available to be fostered right now, and then at 4 months of age he'll need to come back for his rabies vaccine that all the big kitties get At that time he will be able to be officially adoptable. Dog of the Day: Randi! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾
Randi is a gorgeous red retriever mix about 3 years old. She came to us as a stray on June 3, and surprisingly, even after her picture was seen by over 5,000 people, no one claimed her! She is sweet and loving, walks good on a leash, and knows sit, shake, and down. She's a little curious of cats but immediately redirects if you tell her "no"; so, she probably could be trained to live peacefully with a cat. Randi came in with another dog, so she most likely will be fine with other dogs, but we will require a meet and greet if you are interested. Overall, we think this beauty is a real prize! If you are looking for a well-mannered, kind girl to make your family complete, you really should take a look at Randi. She's a dandy!.......

We have some more great news from our little shelter! Today, we had a very kind Mother and son come in to look at dogs. The son knew what he was looking for so we got right to work. He was shown two great options and Nova was THE ONE! She has been with us since March so we definitely felt as though it was her time to shine and shine she did. We've already gotten an update where she was chasing a ball in the backyard and his Mother said they're getting along famously. He is Nova's person, no doubt! Thank you for considering us and making Nova feel right at home where she belongs! 💚

We have some big news that happened today! Our dog Snoop, got his very first adoption appt since we got him in Feb. Feb was a very long time ago but today was his day. This really nice couple came in specifically to meet him and no one else. It went off without a hitch and Snoop went to his new, very own home! We cannot be more excited for this really great boy that has made big strides since coming to us AND who will continue learning with this nice couple, their three children and another older dog sibling. Thank you for choosing us and more importantly giving this amazing boy the best home he could hope for! 💚

The folks here are nice, but its very loud. In my opinion, living in a home with a family is so much better! I'm kind, gentle, walk pretty good on a leash and know how to sit. I like other dog pals and I absolutely love kids! My dream would be to live with a young family with littles OR maybe with a grandpa and grandma whose kiddos come to visit. I'd also love to have my own blanket or dog bed, if its not too much to ask. More than anything, I want to be part of your life; not put on a chain in the back of the yard or left alone in a dog pen. Pearl is a beauty! She was relinquished to us months ago, along with her 5 kittens from two different litters. Pearl was single mom who had to pack her bags with her kids and move to the shelter; an all too common sad story. Her babies flourished and were adopted weeks ago. This beauty did not let all this drama get her down. Nope! Pearl is proud of her kids and is now very ready to find her own family that will love and dote on her...and she's ready to return that affection! Pearl is good with other kitties, and will be ok with a laid back dog and kind, respectful kids. (She can be shy meeting new people at times; which is understandable. When you are stunningly beautiful, you want to be sure of people's intentions!) Otherwise, she pretty easy going and truly is a dream girl.........

Lola has been with us for 6 months! Shw is a gorgeous little ginger girl, about 9 months old. She came to us as a very scared stray kitty and is blossoming into her own gentle, kind personality. Lola is in Kitty City right now so the little ones in Kitten Corral do not overwhelm her. She is gaining confidence as each day passes! Such a sweetie. Lola will do best in a quiet home with another young kind kitten or a teenager that is very respectful of her space. We want to make sure Lola continues on her journey to trust humans and other animals but slowly and on her own terms. She truly is a real beauty now. We can only imagine her when she's fully grown!........

Piper is a tall, long-legged girl who was found as a stray back in April. Piper is submissively sweet with people, and then runs and plays hard with any dog friends. About one year old, Piper loves to be loved on and is very affectionate in return. Plus, she is a strikingly pretty, tall beauty. She is an amazing girl and will make a all-around wonderful family dog. If you are looking for loving girl to be your (or your dog's) best buddy, Piper is a great option!..........

Kitty Update: Alice (the Calico) and Tiggie (the Tabby, formerly Kitty Girl)!
We recently got these pix from their Mama Robbi: "Update on the girls. Everyone is well. We changed Miss Kitty's name to Tigger or Tiggie. (Every time we called for her the whole crew came running.) She is really very sweet. She still isn't fond of being picked up and held, but she loves cuddles in the morning and before bed at night. I don't know why so many people overlooked her, but I am glad we brought her home 🤣 Alice is a mama's girl. Likes to curl up in the chair with me, hang out in the windows or on my desk. We have discovered she does not like storms. First crack of thunder she disappears. Alice has been home since before she got here. 💜 They are a perfect addition."

What a fun day we had today! Our first appt came in with THE cutest little girl looking for a companion kitty to grow up with. Her and her kind Mom looked through the entire shelter. They loved many but decided Johnson was her perfect fit. We think Johnson is probably just as sweet as his owner and are very excited for their many adventures together!

Next up was a really nice guy who was supposed to meet his wife here. However, yesterday she had a slight accident so she couldn't make it. They made it work so he videotaped his visit and they decided on handsome, loveable Ghost. Ghost hasn't been with us for a long time but he sure has grown on the staff in quick fashion. We know he'll do the same at his new home too!

Thanks to both families for allowing us to show you our sweet ones. We appreciate the chance to give any of our dogs and cats their fantastic, forever homes and today, two went home. We are blessed! 💚

pUpdate! 🐾🐾 We recently got this message from Sue and Randy about their puppy Yukon, who they adopted in May to become an emotional support dog for a young man with autism: "Yukon is settling in quite well. He is so playful and lively! He is a great addition to our family. When he first arrived, he checked out his new home and decided my stuffed Husky was going to be his new chew toy. He loves playing with the grandkids. Yukon is now 7-months old and is growing, playing, and going for walks. We love this beautiful baby. He's in his biting and chewing stage, but we are working with him and are going to put him through training. They will also train him as a service/emotional support dog for our autistic grandson. They have become very good friends. He's a sweet, loving little boy and we just wanted to update everyone on his progress with us."
🐾🐾 We love it when pets become so woven into a family...and even become crucial to the day-to-day life of those who need them! We are thankful to Sue, Randy and all our adopters who see the true potential of their pets and work to bring out their best!

Since we do first-come, first-serve adoptions, we highly recommend making an appointment asap if you want this pet. Dog of the Day: Rain! 🐾 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞! 🐾
"Hi there! I'm called Rain, cuz' when they found me at 9 months old, I was chained to a tree in the pouring rain, with only a plastic dog carrier for shelter. I was a bit scared when I got here, but I'm happy now! I absolutely adore belly rubs, treats, and lively games of tug of war with my favorite toy. I am very well behaved because I work with a trainer every week! I must say, I'm doing so well!!! She says I'm incredibly attentive and have learned so much already. These are her exact words: "Rain is VERY sweet and has a strong willingness to please. She is treat motivated, which is great for training. She loves to play fetch and enjoys a good scratch on her chest. She has come a long way and does really well with calm children, men and women. She will probably be good with other dogs, though we definitely need to do a meet-n-greet. She is curious about cats, so we will test her more if folks request that. She does bark when she gets excited, but she has been learning that barking once is enough. She will do best with a family that is willing to continue working with her puppy-like tendencies. There will be free ongoing training sessions from me to whoever adopts her."
"Isn't it nice she said all that? We get FREE training! I've already mastered the art of sitting, walk nicely on a leash, and know other manners as well! I'm determined to absorb every bit of love and training, so that I can be the very best little girl in a forever home of my own. Could you be that special family for me?"...........
