🦁Mountain lions are a vital part of the ecosystem and are considered a keystone species.
🌜While they are somewhat common in this region, daytime encounters are rare because they are primarily nocturnal and avoid humans. Mountain lions love to hunt deer and other smaller prey. We can coexist with these important, amazing creatures!
🐱If you encounter a mountain lion:
-Stay close together with the rest of your party
-Pick up children or pets
-Maintain as much distance from the animal as possible
-DO NOT run, as this can trigger a predatory instinct
-DO NOT turn your back, bend over, or crouch
-Speak calmly, loudly, and firmly while moving away
-Try to appear as large and formidable as possible
-If attacked, fight back using whatever is available

😎This coast horned lizard, spotted recently at Garland Ranch Regional Park, is a California Species of Special Concern and also has a very special defense mechanism!
🌈While rarely sighted horned lizards are relatively easy to observe because rather than fleeing predators, they rely on avoidance mechanisms including camouflage or defensive postures.
😱Of the California species, only the coast horned lizard is known to sq**rt blood from their eye sockets as a last resort defense mechanism! Another reason to give space and never touch wildlife in your regional parks.

🐢You may be used to seeing turtles near the water, but the Western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata) can be spotted more often on trails and upland areas in spring through early summer when they are in search of mates or egg laying sites!
🌈If you see a turtle, do NOT disturb them or move them to water, they are where they need to be during an important part of their life cycle.

🧐California's only native freshwater turtle, the Western pond turtle is a “species of special concern” and has experienced significant population reductions in its range. It is important to leave them undisturbed in both their aquatic and terrestrial habitats!
