CORRAL

CORRAL We equip adolescent girls in high-risk situations through a long-term, holistic program.

The CORRAL Riding Academy is a non-profit organization operating out of Cary and Raleigh, North Carolina dedicated to bettering the lives of troubled teens and rescued horses. We do this by using horses as a vessel to promote healing, growth and lasting life change. The unique structure of CORRAL is based on five components: horseback riding, vocational training, academic support, equine-assisted

learning & Psychotherapy (EAL & EAP), and mentorship. The design of these components allows participants to not only gain equine knowledge and skills, but also develop the behaviors, attitudes, and skills necessary for success in life beyond horses. Participants are referred to CORRAL from agencies within their communities, including Human Services, local Police Departments, Juvenile Justice, and school administrators. We are a preventative diversion program and, therefore, strive to create an environment for lasting healing and freedom from risky behaviors. Candidates are selected through an application process which measures their levels of risk and commitment. Selected participants will demonstrate both a high level of risk and a high level of commitment. Once asked to join the program, participants must commit to a minimum of one year, however, the vision is to shepherd each girl through the remainder of her middle and high school years.

Meet Teddie, a Riding Academy graduate.

Teddie was initially reluctant to come to CORRAL, but the longer they stuck with it, the more they bloomed. The encouragement and support Teddie received at CORRAL started to change their perspective.

Kids thrive in an environment grounded in consistency and structure. CORRAL provides a safe community that promotes growth and healing. Time and time again, we see that healing leads to transformational life change.

Transformation doesnโ€™t happen overnight. It takes place over time, in moments big and small.

Did you know we had TWO FARMS?! We are building our and program space for our Campus in the Neuse River area and we need your help!

Thank you to all the CORRAL who helped us get this far. However, there's still much to do! We are working all to prepare the farm for the girls in the fall. There's plenty of time and lots of ways you can help.

CORRAL is putting down new roots in Raleigh - join them in building their barn and program space! Your support will help get the farm ready for students and horses in time for the 2024-25 program year. This is a dynamic project - depending on when you join in, you may be framing walls, installing insulation, setting posts, and more. Experience with construction is awesome, but not required.

"The supportive environment and the opportunity to work with horses helped me develop confidence and resilience."

DJ's childhood was tainted with instability and trauma, including constantly moving from home to home, bullying, and severe abuse. She was in desperate need of support and structure when she found CORRAL.

Now a rising sophomore at Appalachian State University majoring in social work, DJ has applied her lessons of resilience, determination, and perseverance to become a successful student.

DJ has a deep desire to return to CORRAL, either as a volunteer or an employee.

"I've also learned to recognize when I need to step back and take a breath, thanks to the lessons I learned at CORRAL."

Before CORRAL, Pressley was involved in unhealthy relationships, which led her to experience a few traumatic events, and she also struggled to navigate her emotions when feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

Now, Pressley has rebuilt her relationships with her family, is engaged, and is working towards her dreams.

She hopes to start her own organization, like CORRAL, but with dogs. She wants to create a safe and supportive environment for animals and humans to thrive and heal like she was able to do.
