This is a great reminder from our friends at Equus. But do you know what the signs of foot soreness related to laminitis are?

Here are some things to look out for:

🍁A digital pulse, make sure you know how to check this.

🍁Standing with more weight on the heals to take weight of the sensitive toe are.

🍁Walking tentatively especially on hard ground.

🍁Spending more time lying down than normal.

🍁Hoof abscess. Horse's with low grade subclinical laminitis can develop pus pockets (abscesses) in their feet. If your horse gets an abscess when the grass is rich especially if they are older and it's the Fall consider that this might be the result of laminitis.

🍁Widening white line and/or white line disease. Have your farrier/trimmer keep an eye on the white line when your horse's feet are trimmed. When the laminae connection to the hoof wall is weak due to laminitis the white line will stretch.

Keep in mind that by the time the horse has obvious laminitis a lot of negative changes have occurred in the feet. Research has shown that subclinical laminitis is often missed so it is vital to watch for the subtle signs such as the stretching white line in order to stop it early.

If you have concerns about how to manage your horse's diet this fall Dr. Thunes has extensive experience working with insulin resistant, PPID and metabolic horses and is always happy to help.
