We love our And-Hof Animals and that includes having fun with them — personally and on social media! — but often, they come to us from very un-fun situations. It's important to talk about them and promote understanding of what they go through, and why we do what we do here at the Sanctuary.

*WARNING: GRAPHIC INFORMATION AHEAD*

These are so-called Broiler Chickens, or rather Chicks. Broilers are being raised for their meat, and they grow and put on weight very fast; after 42 days, they get slaughtered.

Their lives are absolute horror from beginning to end. An overwhelming ammonia stench causes severe upper respiratory burns as the large industrial buildings they're raised in have no daylight or cleanliness. They are fed antibiotics from Day 1 to prevent against infections and bird flu, and many of them die — mostly suffocating or heart attacks.

For slaughtering they are put on a conveyor belt, a knife drops down to cut off their heads and then they fall into boiling water for de-feathering. In about 40% of cases the knife misses the head, and the Chicken falls into the boiling water alive!

To consider how regular this is: Americans alone consume 8 B-I-L-L-I-O-N Chickens every year.

Dorothee the Donkey is Mom to Mirko and Nutmeg, and they came to And-Hof together after their owner passed away.

Greta the Goat, unbeknownst to us at the time, was pregnant upon arrival. Just after 5am on March 10, 2022, in the midst of a brutal snowstorm, Ella was born in our founder Kurt's kitchen! As Greta's other Kids were taken away from her, she and Ella are very close. (Mom is a bit camera shy 😉)

Today is both National Animal Advocacy Day and National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. The mission of our Sanctuary is to provide a place where farm animals are friends, not food — where they, along with Dogs, Cats and other typical household pets can live a safe, happy and harmonious life as naturally as possible.

If you plan to get a pet, we encourage you to visit your local shelters — they and the animals they house need you the most.

Advocates are hoping someone’s conscience, combined with cash, will bring forward the person who shot a dog near Catskill last month. A new billboard on Route 9W is advertising a $10,000 reward for information to appeal to the community for help.

This morning our little groundhog friend Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow, predicting early spring. Thank goodness, otherwise we feared a repeat of last year's incident where Winston the Rooster...well, tried to show Phil what he thought of that! (We're not sure where he learned what a LEG DROP is — maybe watching the dogs wrestle??)

We are SO grateful that so many people care about Kolija this much. As a nonprofit Sanctuary we rely heavily on the generosity of others, and what's been shown in the aftermath of this terrible and tragic incident is absolutely humbling. Thank You ❤️

Specifically, your donations go towards paying off the surgery bill, follow-up vet visits, x-rays, medication, physical therapy and building a fenced-in enclosure to limit his activity once he is allowed to be off-leash.

He is home and doing well, all things considered 🙏

Thank You to everyone who has donated and shown support for Kolija so far. Here is the latest update:

Evidence found by the investigation of the DEC and State Troopers, as well as the position and size of the entry and exit wound, strongly suggest that Kolija was shot from the back and at close range — most likely as he was running away.

Since the incident’s exact location has been identified, the ongoing investigation confirmed that the to-date-unidentified shooter was trespassing at the time.

Accidents happen, but with these new details we are not only heartbroken but angry that someone would possibly target our sweet Dog!
