Granny B Farms

Granny B Farms Granny B Farms has been sold. The new owners of the farm (now Pleasantview Produce) are selling produce on site Mon-Sat 8am to 7pm. No Sunday sales.

No phone access since they are Amish. We are an organic farm that specializes in asparagus and berries. We have strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries in the field. We have raspberries in high tunnels as well as in the field. We have a smaller amount of specialty berries, including aronia, gooseberry, elderberry, and currants. We also grow annual vegetables.

I just spoke with Sarah about the strawberries. The fields have been pretty heavily picked and we got a lot of rain here last night. She recommended waiting until early next week for picking.

Strawberries are getting so very close!

I have heard that there are now some fully ripe berries but that the majority are still ripening. So you could go today if you are desperate for berries, but waiting until Monday would be safer.

As a reminder, they are closed on Sundays. Please do not include Amish people in your photographs.

I talked with the new owners and looked at the strawberry field. There will definitely NOT be picking this weekend but the plants are loaded with unripe berries and flowers. I would estimate 7-10 days for picking to begin.

Granny B Farms is moving to Massachusetts! Technically, the people are moving and not the land. πŸ˜‰ The land will be in the same location (πŸ™„) under new ownership. Pleasantview produce will be operated by the Gingrich family. They are planning to continue strawberry upick as well as organic certification. Strawberry season is expected to start late May. Because the Gingrich family is Amish, they do not have a digital presence. I will post updates this year since I will still be in Ohio at the beginning of the season, so hopefully everyone will be able to get their delicious berries.

P.S. Amish people have a religious objection to being photographed, so please do not include them in any photographs you take while there. Taking pictures of the scenery and the berries is totally fine.

Clintonville Market is tomorrow. Blueberry season is ending, so this will likely be our last week. We may have some next week also, but it is not certain. We will continue to have raspberries. For vegetables, look for okra, squash, tomatoes, cabbage, beets, garlic, potatoes, and onions.

Market day!

We will have blueberries and red raspberries for sale this morning. We still have asparagus for sale but this season is coming to an end. We will also have kale, cauliflower, lettuces, and spring onions.

Photo: we checked on the new hives and added another box so they will have enough room to store honey for the winter. Before you can ask...we don’t have honey for sale. We keep the hives to encourage adequate pollination of the crops.

Strawberry upick will be coming to an end tomorrow, 6/16. We will be open just from 9-1. There are ripe berries, but they are becoming more scattered. If you are looking for just a few quarts, you shouldn’t have much trouble. If you are looking for a flat or more, you are likely to be hot and cranky by the time you gather that many (but just think of the sense of accomplishment you will have!).

We are not doing raspberries for upick at this time but plan to do so later in the season. We will have prepicked berries available.

Photo: the bane of my existence...Creeping Thistle. It is prickly and spreads like crazy. I have spent many hours cutting, pulling, mowing, and cursing at this plant this month.

We are going to be open today for upick from 10-6. The berry season is coming to an end...almost all berries are ripe at this point. We also lost some berries due to the recent rainy weather. There are still a good number of ripe berries overall, but the fields are starting to get patches with very few berries.

Strawberry upick will be open again today. We are getting towards the end of berry season but the fields still hold a lot of berries, especially the new fields. The old fields started producing earlier and are closer to finishing. The forecast is for sun all day, so we will be open 10-6.

We have decided to open the strawberry fields for an additional u pick day today. The rain and threat of rain has limited our picking and we have a lot of ripe berries. We will be open 10-6 as long as it doesn’t rain.

The ground is wet, but the forecast looks good for picking this morning. We will be open at 10 and will stay open until 6 as long as it doesn’t rain. Current forecast is predicting rain in the afternoon. There are a lot of ripe berries since rain has limited our picking capacity and we are approaching the end of the season. So come pick berries this morning!

Photo: hairy vetch. It is pretty, the bees love it, and it fixes nitrogen into the soil. But it is still a w**d when growing in the strawberry patch.

Water, water everywhere... 🌧

It is raining now and is supposed to keep raining for most of the day, so it is very unlikely that berry picking will be possible. If the situation changes and we are able to offer upick later in the day, I will comment below.

I was picking last evening, and it seems to me that the season may be shorter than I anticipated. We will probably only have berries for another week.

The current forecast is worrisome for strawberry picking today. We will be open from 10 to 6 if the fields are dry.

We have decided to open you pick for additional hours tomorrow (Thursday) from 12 to 6. The weather forecast looks very promising and the berry forecast is also very promising.

Photo: The rainy day yesterday gave me a rare opportunity to actually make something using strawberries as opposed to my typical method of just eating them plain. The kids and I made almond flour brownies topped with strawberries, chocolate frosting, and then more strawberries. They were wonderful (and now almost gone)! Although obviously this is not as healthy as plain berries, we love an occasional treat.

Upick strawberry update:

The weather app that I use gives us a 50% chance of rain at nine but then the risk goes away until afternoon. The sky definitely looks risky for rain. I will post ASAP if it rains but otherwise we will be open at 10. Berry amounts are lower than yesterday, but there are a good number of ripe berries.

The forecast for today has improved, but there is still a high chance of rain between 11 and 1. We will be open from 10 until 6 as long as the fields are dry. There are a lot of ripe berries out there, so hopefully the rain goes elsewhere.

The weather forecast still looks good for picking today from 10-6, though tomorrow is likely to be rainy. We will also have asparagus and other vegetables for sale at the farm.

We will also have lots of strawberries and vegetables at the Clintonville Farmers’ Market.

Note: photo is of an elderberry flower cluster forming. I love elderberries because they remind me of the grandmother for whom this farm was named.

Strawberry upick days will be Saturday through Tuesday 10-6. We have upick strawberries and prepicked asparagus and other vegetables. Picking is always weather-dependent. Check Facebook for updates...if you don’t see anything recent, contact me to check conditions prior to heading out.

If you bring your own containers, we weigh them before and after with berries at $2.80 per pound. With our containers, they are $4/quart or $28/flat of 8 quarts.

We are certified organic. Beyond that, we have not sprayed any herbicides or pesticides on these plants (even organic-approved ones).

Looking at the weather forecast for the next few days and the status of our strawberry field, we have decided to offer a bonus you pick time for strawberries today from 12 to 6. There are a good number of ripe berries in the older strawberry fields. If you can handle the heat, grab a bottle of water and come out to pick berries.

Certified organic!

Mizuna
Mustard greens

Broccoli rabe

P.S. The adorable buckling is for sale, just not at the market. Kiko breed with both parents registered through NKR. PM me if you are interested.

Asparagus is now available in larger amounts. The warm weather has accelerated the growth and we should not run out at this week’s market. We also will have lettuce, broccoli rabe, spinach, kale, radishes, and spring onions. Strawberries are expected in about a month. We hope to see you all tomorrow!

Clintonville Farmers’ Market starts tomorrow. The cold weather gave the season a slow start but we will have kale, collards, sorrel, green onions, and radishes. CSA members will also get baby arugula and broccoli rabe. We have some garden starts also...beets, asian greens, broccoli, and cabbage. Unfortunately, asparagus hasn’t started yet. Hopefully the warm weather predicted for next week helps to get this going. Please come see us at the market!
