Centralia Humane Society

Centralia Humane Society The OFFICIAL page for The Centralia Humane Society. Our application process ensures that our pets will receive great care in their new homes.

Our adoption application and requirements can be found at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt. We are a no kill animal rescue facility serving Marion County, IL. We require that potential adopters have their current/past pets taken to the vet yearly for vaccinations, and that dogs are on heartworm prevention 12 months out of the year. First time pet owners must agree to keeping the animals on h

eartworm prevention and getting yearly vaccinations. We are a small shelter run by a very small amount of people. Please be patient with us. Please also understand that there is only one of each animal and unfortunately only one home can be chosen. We choose homes that best suit each individual animal, not on a first-come-first-serve basis.

ADOPTION FEE SPONSORED! Just need an approved application!

Meet Betty! She is a sweet, 3 year old Boxer mix. She gets along well with cats, kids, and select other dogs. Meet and greet required with any potential dogs in the home.

Betty is a little timid at first, especially of men. Once she is comfortable with you, she’s a great dog! She is potty trained, walks well on a leash, and knows a few commands. No one has ever applied for Betty and she has been with us over a year!

YOU could change that! Apply today at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt.

Please help us help Dottie!

Do you have extra love to give to Dottie? Looking to help a dog in need and watch the process of her starting to trust you? Dottie will be needing a foster home soon. Or a permanent home! She won't do well going back to the kennel environment at the rescue, but I won't be able to keep her much longer. So help us find a foster or permanent home! Food and vet care is covered and I will help you through the process of working with her.

The ideal house for Dottie would be one that has a predictable routine and no young kids. Other dogs should be friendly to people and dogs. Relatively quiet and few people coming and going.

She is potty trained on a schedule, fine in a crate and quiet. She likes to chew on benebones and toys with treats inside. Hasn't shown any resource guarding. She is a flight risk and needs to be on leash or in a secure fenced yard.

If you've ever wanted a cat like dog, Dottie is your girl 🤣 Overtime, she will continue to come out of her shell and become more dog like 🐶 but right now she just exists in the same house mostly. She has been getting more excited about greeting me.

If you want to GREATLY help a dog in need and foster/adopt Dottie, please reach out to me or Centralia Humane Society. Please share this to get Dottie more exposure 🙏🏼

This beautiful blockhead is Sweet Potato! We received her several months ago from a vet clinic where she was surrendered with a severe case of demodex mange. She spent several months recovering fully and growing her hair back but she’s back and better than ever! She is an approximately 8 month old bully breed mix. Her government name is Sweet Potato but she also goes by Potato, Tato, Tapato, Tater Tot, Potato Head, and whatever other nicknames we cook up.

Some Potato factoids (potatoids??!) include her being very smart and a food motivated learner. She knows sit, she’s learning wait (to eat food that she sees- it helps teach impulse control too!) and she is learning lay down as well. Her coolest trick is that she can P*E ON COMMAND 😎 our friends at Solid Rock Vet Clinic started teaching it to her and we made sure to continue the training because it will make transitioning into a home so much easier for everyone involved! She keeps a very clean kennel, so potty training in the home environment should be a breeze.

She loves to be active and with a little bit of work on her leash manners she would make a great walking and hiking buddy. She loves water too! She would do best in a home with dogs that are similar in size to her because she loves to roughhouse and while she doesn’t mean any harm, she gets on smaller dogs’ nerves with her antics 😅 She would do well in a home with a set routine and someone who will put boundaries in place and enforce them. Potato’s a sweetheart, but she is headstrong and in her “teenage” phase!

Please share in case her furever home is on your friends list! If you’re interested in meeting her, call out to the shelter to make an appointment or you can meet her at the adoption event at Thrive Dispensary in Mount Vernon on Saturday! We’ll be there from 11-5 or until it gets too hot for the dogs. Our adoption application can be found at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt and emailed to [email protected]. Message us with any questions!

We had quite the week this week! A few months ago, Crystal reached out to us that she had chosen our shelter to be the recipient of her yearly crochet auction’s proceeds. She has over a million followers on her YouTube channel, and has used her platform to help give back to communities in the area! They were able to raise $64,000 for our little shelter!

Attached is the video she made coming out to the shelter. We are SO thankful and blown away for this wonderful donation, if you watch the video we have a kitty going up to U of I for specialized care this coming week. It really couldn’t have come at a better time.

We appreciate each and every one of you and your kindness to donate. Any amount big or small - makes a difference.

THANK YOU Bag O Day Crochet Community! Go check out her YouTube channel and give her a follow! ❤️

Walter is looking for a home! 🐾

He is estimated to be 5-8 years old. This cutie is around 9-10 lbs. He would do best in a home with no small children. He does well with other dogs, and cats!

He LOVES to play with toys! Walter does have a skin medication that he will likely be on for the rest of his life. It is pretty inexpensive. He had almost no hair on his body when we got him - it appears he had a tough life before he met us. He also has some vision issues and can’t see the greatest.

Walter is a cuddle bug! He loves curling up for a good nap in the sun. He would love to watch TV with you and keep you company!

Everyone needs a Walter in their life!

Apply today at www.centraliahumanesocietyil.org/adopt.

✨ Very special post ahead ❤️ ✨

In early 2018, the little pup you see pictured below was brought into our shelter. He came with a litter of 5 pups - each looking totally different from one another. They were dumped off of Jolliff Bridge Rd. We decided to call this one Sparky.

A few months later, Sparky was adopted! All was well. Until a year and a half later, in September 2019. We received a call that no shelter wants to hear. We were contacted by a shelter in Missouri that Sparky had been surrendered to them. And he was in rough shape. According to the family, Sparky was aggressive, and needed to be “put down”.

We wanted our dog back. And we wanted answers. After following the other shelter’s hold protocol, they deemed him as non aggressive. Actually, they had become quite fond of him. We got our boy back emaciated, and not feeling well. We were heartbroken and confused.

Fast forward after some specialized vet visits we had our answer to all of our questions. Sparky wasn’t aggressive - he was in pain. Sparky was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Poly Arthritis, a lesser known autoimmune disorder. Not great, but manageable. He also needed a major back knee surgery, that came with weeks of physical therapy.

So we continued on the best we knew how. We got Sparky this surgery (he got a glory ride home in the back of Hanna’s mustang), and we started PT. He made a wonderful recovery thanks to the volunteers and staff that dedicated time to exercise, walk, and medicate him.

The road for Sparky was never one that you could see very far down. As soon as we thought we had a medication regiment down, he would decline again. He was on high doses of prednisone for quite a long time. All while trying to find this amazing boy a home.

We finally settled into a routine with one of our local vets. Applicants were few, and always fell through even after they sounded promising. Over the years, Sparky had become the mascot of the shelter. Drive thru workers at McDonald’s, Burger King, the Bank, you name it - they knew Sparky by name and showered him with bacon, treats, and other goodies any time he came through. People around town would recognize him simply from driving by the shelter each day to go to school or work.

Last week, we received not one, but two applications for Sparky. After doing all of our routine checks, both looked good! We couldn’t believe it. But they needed to pass our most important test - understanding his needs, and following through all the way until he made it home with them. A step that many before had failed.

That being said, quite the bittersweet moment we had yesterday. Sparky is on his way HOME!

September of this year would have been 5 years back with us. 5 years of so much love, memories, and plenty of cookies. Our staff and volunteer base has poured so much into Sparky over the years that it was a little bit hard to let him walk out that door. But it’s moments like these that us at the Centralia Humane Society do what we do. No matter what the disposition, no matter the medical problem. There is a home out there for EVERYONE. You just have to find it.

We are so thrilled to watch Sparky in his new home, and are so happy that his new people are willing to share his life with us from afar. 9 hours they drove for our special boy! They are more than equipped and capable to care for him and all of his needs.

As I walked into the shelter this morning, it almost seemed like a shell of what it was with Sparky’s joyful and bossy presence missing. Please enjoy these photos of Sparky over the years of us caring for him. We are overjoyed for his new life that he has! 🐾💕

We would like to thank all of you for donating - money, supplies, etc. All of these things help us continue to help dogs like Sparky. So many resources were poured into our care for him!

Our hearts are full after this happy tail! ❤️
