The marigolds are really having a moment on our farm right now. 🧡🧡

🌼 I love these beauties: their ruffled petals, their bright saturated colors, I even love their smell!

Getting the timing right to have fresh marigolds this time of year is quite tricky. I feel proud of this achievement of crop planning and the right varieties (short day bobtailed) to make it happen this year.

This timing is significant because these flowers are culturally important for several different celebrations, including Diwali and Dia de los Mu***os. They happen to be on theme color-wise for Halloween too!

We had our farmstand open today from 10 to 6 and it will be open again tomorrow November 1 from 10 to 6. It will be closed this weekend so stock up on marigolds and other fresh farm flowers on Friday. As a reminder, we will not be at the indoor farmers market so this is your chance to get your local flower fix.

It’s not just the app- these heirloom mums ✨glow✨ in real life too!!

I’m so excited for the next round of blooms. Some of my most favorite flowers are on the shoulder seasons when it feels like things are almost over or when they’re just getting started in spring.

Right now we have limited quantities of these so they’re reserved for our wholesale florists and designers. As long as the weather holds out, we will continue to stock them in the farm stand.

Also- I’m toying with the idea of offering some Thanksgiving centerpiece arrangements this year. We used to do a big push for holiday arrangements but haven’t offered them the past couple of years.

What do you think? Do you want these on your fancy table next to your pie?!

In August, I had the honor of speaking at a regional conference (Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers🤓).

As part of the presentation, I introduced Delight Flower Farm and gave a little breakdown of revenue channels/sales outlets for our farm. Our fresh flower growing season is now nearing its end for 2024.

I’m starting to reflect and make plans for 2025. I just referred back to this graphic because it really shows how much we do here as a small business. It’s way more than just growing flowers. 🌸☺️

Thought you might like to see it too.

This teeny tiny bottle is the cutest farm find yet. 🥹

This spot on the farm has so much trash surfacing. We’ve found everything from mattress springs to door hinges to buckets and buckets full of broken glass during our brief time here.

I think it’s a several decades old burn spot. From back in the time when people who lived in the country just burned their trash instead of having it collected or dropped off somewhere.

Although we’ve spent countless hours pulling stuff out of it, we still find things surfacing. This year we decided one of our tulip beds will be located here since we will add lots of compost to the tulip beds. We’re hoping that it remediates the soil a bit.

Over time the rusty metal will return to minerals, and the glass will turn to silica/sand, which will be good for the soil. It’s amazing the little ways the earth can repair itself. In the meantime, all this trash has been kind of a hassle to deal with so finding this intact bottle feels like finding an uplifting treasure! 🍯

🌬️ Both sadness and relief come with the first frost. Each year on “frostmas” I try to get out as the sun rises to witness the fleeting frosty beauty before the flowers thaw and turn to brown mush. A few tears, heavy sighs, and quiet smiles as I let go of the field crops for this year.

In a way it feels like a fresh start, almost like New Year’s Eve when seemingly immediately I am making plans and resolutions for the next growing season. More of this, less of this, won’t do it that way again, etc. It’s a time of year of taking lots of notes, and discussing reflections with my crew, fellow farmers and gardeners.

Frost is also a sign that the time of slowing down is nearing. It’s not quite resting time yet because there’s lots of field cleanup to do and thousands of things to plant in the next six weeks. (~25k on this farm including tulips, peonies, plugs, and ranunculus/anemone corms)

Soon is the too-short season (for farmers) of winter. Which is when I see friends, read books, cook, travel- all those regular people things there’s no time or energy for during the height of growing season! I’m so looking forward to winter! 🧣

At Delight Flower Farm, our mission intersects between the tenets of diversity, sustainability, and an appreciation for the beauty of the land we walk, work, and live upon. As such, we understand the importance of recognizing and respecting the Indigenous, Native Americans that this land was once home to, prior to their forced removal. In an effort to honor the truth of the land we find ourselves on, we respectfully acknowledge that Delight Flower Farm is located on the lands of the Peoria, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux), Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Kaskkaskia, and Myaamia (Miami) Nations.

While this list is not a definitive one due to the malleable borders that often characterized Native territories, it is one attempt to acknowledge those who first traversed the land, the historical context in which it exists, and to do so as accurately as possible. This acknowledgment aims to demonstrate a commitment to the de-colonial process, to the championing of Indigenous stories of the past and present, and as a starting place to change how the land is seen and talked about.

We at Delight Flower Farm will continue to support the BIPOC community in whatever way we can and we invite you to do so as well. 🧡🪶

Thanks to for help researching and writing this land acknowledgment. More info on the “about page” of our website.

*If you identify as such please enter code “BIPOC” when registering for workshops with us and receive a 5% discount.
