5 ways to decrease risk for lower leg injuries:

1. Balanced feet. Stay on schedule with your farrier.

2. Warm-up. A 15 minute walk prior to any other warm up has been shown to significantly decrease lower leg injuries.

3. Condition your horse. Tired, fatigued muscles increase the risk for tendon injuries.

Tendons are an extension of the muscle. They’re one long piece of the same tissue. If the muscle is too tired to work, the tendon isn’t stabilized correctly.

4. Cross train on un-even surfaces. Walking on new, uneven surfaces increases their awareness to the feet and strengthens stabilizing muscles.

5. Good nutrition. Nutrition is the foundation of all happy and healthy soft tissue in the body.
