Summer time pet stress!

While not specific to just warmer months, summer is prime time for loud noises that can stress both dogs and cats. We’ll be sharing tips to alleviate stress for your furry companions this month. Sometimes all it takes is some extra exercise and creating a safe space for them to settle into during events, other times they may need a little help with supplements or prescription medication to help manage stressful situations.

Either way, we’re here to help you make the best decision for your 4-legged friends! 🐾

LAH will be closed on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day. We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, May 28th. In the event of an emergency, please proceed to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

Some pet safety reminders for this weekend:

🐾 Keep food and drinks out of reach! To name a few: Alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, and chocolate are all toxic to pets.

🐾 If your pets are spending time with you outdoors, make sure they have access to water and plenty of shade!

🐾A lot of pets are afraid of fireworks and are at a high risk of getting lost. Make sure to keep your pets inside in a safe area and double check to make sure their microchip information is current and ID tags are on.

This weekend we encourage you to share your favorite memory of a soldier that gave their life, let a gold star family know you are thinking about them or simply take a moment of silence to remember all those we have lost. Thank you to all of the brave men, women, and canines that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We will never forget.

According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), 1 in 20 dogs have tested positive for Lyme Disease in Washtenaw County so far in 2024. In 2023, our area was 1 in 30 dogs, and in 2022, 1 in 50! This is a huge increase in recent years. As many of you have likely noticed, there are many more ticks out and about in beautiful southern Michigan! We should expect this upward trend to persist as we continue to experience very mild winters in Michigan.

LAH is here to help make sure your pets are protected against these nasty parasites. Call us today to schedule an appointment for your pets! Our veterinarians and support staff would love to help you choose the best flea and tick prevention option for your pet. We also offer tick-borne disease testing in house or through our outside laboratory. We can also help get your 4-legged friend vaccinated against Lyme Disease.

It’s National Heartworm Awareness Month 🪱

Heartworm disease is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites your pet. After the larvae are circulated through your pet’s body via the bloodstream, they begin to grow into long white worms that look like cooked spaghetti. Those that reach the blood vessels of the heart and lungs cause the most damage.

The good news is that heartworm disease can be prevented with oral, topical, or injectable medication and it’s best to give your pet heartworm prevention year-round!

Does your pet need a prescription? Contact us at 734-475-8696 or reach out to us on PetDesk app!

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. 💐

As a part of our No Lilies for Kitties educational campaign, we're kicking off the series by sharing which species of lilies are toxic to cats. True lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats and can potentially cause severe kidney failure. Check out the graphic below for examples, and visit the link below to learn more:

Don't forget to let your dogs stop and smell the roses!

Walking is just as important for their well-being as it is for our own. Leave your phone in your pocket or leave it at home (if safe to do so) and be present with your 4-legged friend. Try a new route, hit the trails, visit a state park, or walk with friends.

February is Pet Dental Health Month!

Here are some things to keep in mind this month and throughout the year:

· The American Veterinary Medical Association reports 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some kind of oral disease by the age of three. It’s one of the most common problems that our four-legged family members face.

· Check your pet’s oral health this month, and make sure you know how to care for their teeth. It is the perfect time to call your veterinarian and schedule a dental check-up for your dog or cat.

· Pets who are developing gingivitis and periodontal diseases often paw at their faces or mouths, frequently have excessive drool, and may also exhibit unwillingness to eat harder foods.

· As with many health issues, prevention is always the best medicine. One way you can take a proactive role in preventing oral disease is by brushing your pets teeth.

· Use a soft-bristled toothbrush daily to clean your pet’s teeth and make sure to only use toothpaste specially formulated for use on pets.

Lane Animal Hospital is passionate about spreading awareness about pet dental health. We encourage pet parents to have their pets teeth examined at least once a year. With that being said, now until the end of the year, for clients who bring their pets in for their annual visit and schedule their dental cleaning within 30 days of that visit, will receive a $20.24 discount on their dental procedure along with a goodie bag to take home!

Call us today at 734-475-8696 or reach out to us on the PetDesk App to schedule your pet's exam!

Winter has arrived! Lane Animal Hospital wants to help prepare you and your pets. Here are some tips to ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable during freezing temperatures: 🐾

• Minimize your pets' time outdoors, especially during extreme cold. Bring them inside if the weather becomes too harsh. ❄️
• Consider using pet clothing, like sweaters or jackets, when going outside, especially for short-haired breeds or older pets. 🧥
• Snow and ice can be harsh on pets' paws. Wipe their paws clean after walks to remove any salt or ice.🧤
• Keep your pets dry to prevent hypothermia. Moisture from snow or rain can quickly lower their body temperature, especially for our senior pets. 🤒
• Ensure your pets' indoor environment is warm and comfortable. Provide warm bedding and avoid placing their sleeping areas near drafts. 🪵
• If your pets are spending time outdoors, it's important to make sure they're staying hydrated. Keep those water bowls full at all times!🫗
• Make sure to knock on the hood of your car before starting it, as cats and other animals will seek shelter under the hood next to a still warm engine. 🚗

These precautions can help keep your pets safe and comfortable during freezing weather. Monitoring their well-being and ensuring a warm and safe environment are crucial to protecting them from harsh winter conditions.

❗If you see a pet restrained outside without shelter for an extended period in extreme weather, please report it to animal control.❗

January is Month! 🐶

Check out this quick read from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), as it has some great advice for new puppy and kitten owners.

This month is Train Your Dog Month! An important reminder - especially if you recently adopted a puppy - is that socialization should be part of your training considerations.

Socialization is what allows pets to enjoy interactions and be comfortable around people and other animals. You can find more puppy (or kitten) socialization tips ➡️ http://bit.ly/2sk6bHo

END OF WATCH:

K-9 Tank retired after his tour of duty with the University of Michigan Police Department in 2020. He was fiercely loyal and dedicated to serving his community along side his handler, Officer Dunny, who he continued to live with into retirement. Tank spent his last day running and playing outside with the people he loved most.

Keep running, sweet boy. Thank you for your service. 💙🖤
