The estate was originally owned by Grahame Wood, founder of Wawa Dairy, and holds significant pedigree. Noteworthy past residents: two generations of the Wood family, including Margaretta Clarissa Duane Wood, a descendent of Benjamin Franklin, and Elise Ravene

Situated on 16 picturesque acres of Pennsylvania countryside just to the south of Philadelphia, Lucky Penny Farm is now home to a small herd of alpacas, three friendly cats, two happy dogs, and a feathery flock of ducks, guinea hens, chickens, and roosters. Since the pandemic, people have forgotten how to behave. We have been barraged with people who think that it’s ok to just show up at our home and expect us to show them around or allow them to walk about on their own. This is our home!! You are trespassing which is illegal! We enjoy the privilege of rescuing animals, many of these animals are sick and/or old and may look to be in rough shape. We do our best to get them veterinary care and keep them feeling comfortable and safe. Also, since the pandemic, we have taken in a lot of pets that were rejected as people returned to work. Because of this, we have less time to worry about your safety if you are here especially if you’re here unexpectedly. With this being said, if you come onto our property, our home, unannounced or uninvited the police will be called. We will be photographing your license plates and you will be arrested for criminal trespassing as we will be pressing charges.

Well, we did a thing again. Delia got to meet the Grinch and Papaya, Mango, Banana, Guava and Blueberry met Santa. All of the fruit kittens are available for adoption. They are the kittens we found abandoned in the Walmart parking lot. Message me if you think you could give one or a few of these sweet babies a forever home for Christmas. Rumor has it that’s what they asked Santa for.

We have some amazing news to share. First, both girls have completely recovered from their accidental poisoning and continue to remain healthy. But the best news was a phone call from New Bolton telling us that Delia’s liver panel labs were all NORMAL. No more liver failure, no more evidence of disease just a happy, healthy thriving little goat (left).

New and improved update on Suzi Q and Delia. They believe that they have gotten through the acute phase of their poisoning!! Woohoo. Neither girl needed surgery today but it's still on the table it they go south again but, Suzi hasn't thrown up since this morning, seems comfortable and has started nibbling on hay. Delia was a little sicker because she is compromised from her liver issues, but she hasn't vomited in 4 hrs and seems more comfortable. She even napped comfortably for a bit this afternoon. She has been on telemetry to monitor her heart because they were worried that she might have an arrhythmia which she did not. Barring any further vomiting, which they don't expect at this point, they will be monitored until their respiration rates return to normal, start eating and can be weaned off IVs. It's a giant step in the right direction. I will keep you updated.

Today’s plan was to share some of the miracles that we enjoy here but sadly, we are once again asking for healing vibes be directed to Delia and Suzi Q. Yesterday while playing in the garden they both ate azalea leaves, unknowingly to us. They were both taken to New Bolton for observation once we realized that they had somehow been poisoned. Today, both girls are getting tracheostomies to protect their airways as they continue to vomit and having their rumens emptied. These are lifesaving measures but they are cautiously optimistic about their futures. Delia is one of our little miracles, hopefully she is able to tolerate this insult.

This past year has been really hard here at Lucky Penny, so hard that it’s hard to justify calling our home Lucky. It’s been a year of losses as our rescue animals are getting older. But this week we said goodbye to one of the best, Squirrel. Squirrel and his brother Snoopy came to be with us 10 years ago at almost 1 year of age. Both boys are special, very sweet, curious and comical. But Squirrel, he was extra special. He loved nothing more than to snuggle up with us while we read him a story or just listened intently as we ranted or poured our hearts out to him. He loved scratches and wasn’t shy about telling you where to take him next. Always a favorite during farm days and with friends and family visiting. He was a true BFF. He loved all animals and took so many babies under his wing, looking out for them keeping them safe and loved. The pigs sleep in a pile with goats on top and alpacas and geese lying next to them.

About a year ago, all of the pigs suddenly lost a ton of weight which terrified us. We were successfully able to treat them and they all regained their weight back, except for Squirrel. We started feeding him separately thinking that he had a problem with his teeth (a common ailment in senior pigs) but it became obvious to us that his teeth were not the problem. We continued to separate him at feeding time and continued treating him for possible parasites to no avail. It became obvious that he had cancer and there was nothing we could do for him except keep him comfortable and happy. So for the past 8 month, that’s just what we did. We spent extra quality time with our him feeding him extra grain, corn, hay and his favorite…fluffernutter sandwiches. He was so happy with the extra attention and reveled in playing jokes on us. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and a grin on his face. He was just so happy. Nothing seemed to ever get him down.

This week, that light slowly went out. He couldn’t get up so we moved him to a stall so we could be with him as he passed. He was able to enjoy unlimited fluffernutter sandwiches, homemade brownies, being read to, sung to and just being spoiled. On Friday August 19, our sweet Squirrel took his last breath surrounded by loved ones. Cancer sucks

It’s been a while since we’ve posted…we’ve been really busy. Too busy, and friends we need a miracle. Little Delia is back in the hospital for the second time in a month. She has been struggling with diarrhea and resistant coccideos which has resulted in a malabsorption infection and liver damage. She is currently on TPN which was started as a life saving effort to help her get the necessary calories and protein that she needs to fight off her illness. Unfortunately, while she is improving clinically, her lab work is suggesting that her liver is failing. Tomorrow we may have to decide to wean her off of this lifesaving procedure if her liver values continue to climb. We need a miracle that her liver stabilizes as she continues to gain strength and hopefully recover. She’s only 4 months old and such a joy.

Her bestie, Suzy Q, has also been a little under the weather the past 2 days. We have been aggressively treating her while keeping a close eye on her should she decline. She is 5 months old so she’s still at a tricky age and very vulnerable to severe illness.

On a happier note, Ellie May has begun to smile a little. She spent the first few days after Jethro’s passing sitting and sleeping at his grave site. Now she rarely goes into the field and when she does it’s only with us and she cries the entire time. It’s so heartbreaking for us to see her so sad, she’s an old girl, her time left should be happy. Which she appears to be when she is with our younger dogs and helping us out in the barn.

Our hearts have once again been severely broken with the silent passing of our beloved guard dog Jethro yesterday and the feeling of hopelessness as we try to comfort his bonded companion Ellie Mae as she grieves his loss. Ellie and Jethro (they have always been a pair) came to be with us over 7 years ago from Arkansas. They had worked together for over 3 years as livestock guardians, diligently protecting their herd of goats even with very little food and no shelter. They were then abandoned by the only humans (I use this term loosely) they knew with no food and a small family of their own. The biggest insult for them came when the only “home” they knew was rented to new humans who didn’t want them. They in turn arranged for their puppies to be taken from them at 6 weeks of age and sent them away to a rescue. They arrived here, skinny and scared not sure they could trust anyone. Jethro was the first to make our acquaintance followed shortly by Ellie. Jethro loved and trusted us with all his heart and lived to keep us and his herd safe. Jethro was the powerful, ever vigilant force in our fields while at the same time he was a gentle sweet giant. He had a job and he took his responsibility very seriously. He lived for his work, his Ellie and his herd. We’ve watched for the past year as he slowed down but refused to quit. He never wanted to rest or take it easy. We respected his wishes all the while watching for any signs of needing to stop, but they never came. Yesterday, he completed his normal perimeter check of the field and greeted us in his usual way, never letting on that his time had arrived. Then, at some point during the day while we were distracted by other things, he quietly walked to a remote corner of his pasture where no one goes to lay his weary head one last time.

RIP Jethro, we love you buddy and thank you for your years of protection.

Squirrel is in dire need of warm wishes and healing vibes. We’ve had the year from hell with resistant parasitic infections and nearly everyone else seems to be recovering, except our sweet Squirrel. He also has neurological symptoms that suggest something else is going on, most likely cancer. We are praying that his lab work comes back with a resistant parasite we have to give him a fifths type of dewormer. Our hearts are breaking and we are spending as much time with him spoiling him with his favorite foods, fluffernutter sandwiches and marshmallows. And we are grateful that he does not seem to be in any pain or suffering, just us. Thanks, he’s the best pig ever.

Check out their page and hopefully in about 5 months they will have lots of pictures of cute kids. For now, we are just happy to have him home, we missed you Clover.

Ugh why am I still awake? Oh, let me just rant a minute. I’m still AWAKE because I can’t stop thinking about the item shown in this picture, an innocent hitch pin clip. Why is a hitch pin clip keeping me up you ask? Because some selfish (insert choice expletive) stole mine! They cost less than $5 at most hardware stores and a few years ago I bought a bunch so each of my hitch pins would have its own pin clip so I would not have to borrow one from one place to use at another for example take the one off my truck to use one the tractor. I just never wanted to get into a situation where I couldn’t find one and have to drop everything to buy a replacement.

Well, Friday morning I found myself in one of the very situations that I had not really anticipated but had planned AGAINST!! Someone, unknowingly to me, took the clip off my hitch pin and didn’t, at the minimum, have the decency to place the ball hitch and pin in the bed of my truck. And for friends unfamiliar with these pins, they are not easy to remove, by design. But by leaving the hitch in place, I was lulled into the false security that my hitch was ready to go at a moment’s notice such as Friday morning when I found myself having to rush a newborn alpaca cria and his mom to New Bolton. As I was driving, about halfway there I felt a tug on my truck and looked in my rear view mirror to see my now unhitched trailer, carrying a freshly postpartum alpaca, careening out of control and threatening to completely disconnect from my vehicle. I was able to slow down and come to a stop on a shoulder barely as wide as my truck. I cringed as my trailer smashed into the back of my truck because of some horrible law in physics. I had to pull forward slightly to get the front end of said trailer out from under my car. I then had to accept that I needed help because it was to dangerous for me to stand between my truck and trailer due to the traffic passing me by at 60+ miles an hour. This alone made remedying the situation alone a potentially deadly accident. I then climbed back into my truck and waited for over an hour for the police to come praying that we didn’t get hit because the thought of my farm help being injured from someone else’s hateful deed was unbearable.

I know many people think that petty theft is nothing, what does it matter that someone stole a $1.50 pin from me, I can afford to replace it. I’ll tell you why it’s not ok…because there is always someone on the receiving end, maybe a shop keeper who has to decide between raising their prices or closing their business or maybe it’s a parent who works long hours and has to shop online for their child’s Christmas gifts or maybe your seemingly “harmless” act could result in someone’s death or severe injury. Let that sink in a minute.

I apologize if I sound angry, I am. I believe that none of my friends would be so careless as to take something as vital as a bloody hitch pin, but someone did. Please if you ever trailer anything, check that your hitch is completely intact, especially if you are as a**l as I am and have a designated clip for every pin.

Millie’s little Grace came into the world this morning just before 9 am and sadly went to sleep around 11:15 am. We are heartbroken and trying to process this loss.

If any of our friends are traveling north on route 1 toward Kennett Square, we are in dire need of help. Long story short, Millie had her baby and Scrapple tried to eat it. We were rushing Millie and baby to New Bolton when my trailer unhitched. If someone is in the area that can run Kayla and the baby to the New Bolton while I wait for help to get Millie there it would be seriously appreciated! Thanks in advance, prayers are also helpful.
