MORNING FUN AT THE RESCUE! Spring is one of our favorite seasons; the weather is warmer, but still invigorating, the fog is thick in the mornings.... and God has a way of cleansing away the winter blues, bringing new life to everything! This is not lost on the horses here at LOFF & EER- well, except maybe Red! She says, "I am too old for all your shenanigans!" They, and the dogs (who are also rescues) were definitely feeling themselves this morning! And, it's such a glorious thing to watch! Excuse our mess- we're under construction! And, ENJOY!

Wilbur Update: π
This is not an easy post for me to write, and it's one of the hardest things about rescue- but even more sadly, sometimes one of the inevitable.
No matter how hard you try, no matter how much vetting, food, love, or care is provided, they are sometimes just too far gone. I always say that, when a horse tells me he's ready to go, I will continue to do right by them, and help them cross the rainbow bridge with love, and dignity. And, while Wilbur's generally inquisitive, sweet face, and incredibly loving, bubbly nature told me one thing- his body, over the last day or two, has taken a rough turn and is telling me differently. THIS LITTLE HORSE has fought SO HARD, and has lived a very long life, even in the face of severe neglect and adversity....and maybe he just realized he didnt have to fight anymore? That he was safe...and loved, and could finally be at peace?
Our vet came out to confirm our suspicions today. Please, watch the video for the full story.
I can honestly say we did everything humanly and monetarily possible for Wilbur, but it just isn't going to be enough. I am so happy that he was able to spend his final weeks eating as much as he could, and getting so much love. That he was no longer all alone, in a field, wondering where is next meal would come from....and for that, my heart is full.
But, I am also breaking.
We love you all, so much, for all your support. And I know Wilbur felt it, too. Please say a prayer for Wilbur, and for those of us here at LOFF and EER. It's going to be a very rough week. β€
We would like to thank our donors, who never cease to amaze us day in and day out with their care and love, our amazing vet team at Coastline Veterinary Services for their help and endless question answering- always, our newest contact, Dr. Hiers Kanapaha Veterinary Services for being knowledgeable and skilled enough to make a diagnosis without causing any great discomfort to Wilbur, and our incredibly knowledgeable and skilled E

Morning Wilbur update!! Such a good, sweet boy! He's integrated well, and is well on the road to a full recovery! Remember- Older horses don't have to starve, or be skinny!! #forwilbur #oneatatime

If you haven't been here before- well, here's a look-see! We are a lush pastured 10 acre farm, fenced and cross fenced, set half a mile back from a county paved road- for horse safety! We believe horses thrive most when unencumbered, while still maintaining their safety! Hence- our pastures are not overly "paddocked." Believe it, or not, we have never had a problem with herd integration or feeding agression! We also have a 36x36x14 shaded breeze barn, with 60' round pen, surrounded by 500 acres of pasture land, in a tranquil, quiet setting. Run free, horse friends- run free!
Oh, Wilby, you mischievous boy! This little mister got his ankles wrapped with his special medicine for the severe mud fever we are going to be battling for a bit. He was SUCH a good boy. Never flinched, not even for the scary suran wrap underneath! BUT, he decided he wanted to be in the BIG BOY pasture, with the other ponies. This video cuts short because he was headed for the gate! He juked mama all around the gate and TOOK OFF RUNNING for the other horses! (Well, more like a fast trot....he doesnt have the ability to run right now.) But, the boy has got some spunk left! He got a very stern talking to about how running right now isn't good for him, and how he almost gave mom a heart attack! Literally just talked to him, like he was a human. I think he really took it to heart. Then he got lots of kisses and another meal. β€π
Alllll the foods. Nom nom nom! β€π #forwilbur
