Wombat did great at MedVet today! He was excited and everyone loved him.

Doc thinks we should stay the course with the phenobarbital, but gave us emergency midazolam to have on hand if needed.

She also believes that the hind end lameness is more so neurological, but also believes there could be some spinal malformation causing it as well. Luckily though, she doesn’t believe it’s a tumor or anything scary like that nesting in his noggin!

He goes back in three months for another consult after we’ve had him longer, and will go back into GP in a couple of for updated blood work an pheno levels. Since getting some meds into him he’s perked up and been a lot friendlier with me, poor dude just feels like garbage. 🖤

It has been discovered that Baby Wombat loves potato cakes and cheese sauce. 🫠 at least he took his meds!

I came out to Mr. Baby having an upset tummy this morning. 😥 He isn’t really wanting to touch his breakfast and he’d rather lounge in bed, but at least his breathing isn’t as heavy today. We go into the vet Friday and this will be addressed if he’s not feeling better by tomorrow.

I’m hoping that it’s just from the stress of moving and adjusting to a new life and environment. I do have his previous records and he is up to date on his vaccines, but even so illnesses can still break through, so please send positive thoughts.

When we go in Friday, I will also be asking them to evaluate him for surgery, both for his soft palate/NARES and his cryptorchid neuter. This will no doubt be expensive and nerve wracking, Baby Wombat is definitely a special case and medically fragile, there is always an unfortunate possibility of him not reacting well to anesthesia. We’ve been questioned a lot about “why not just euthanize”, and while I hear and understand where people are coming from, what if two surgeries could literally save his life? What if two surgeries, moderate recovery time, and a few thousand dollars later, this precious creature could do a 180° in life and thrive? I owe it to him to try.

If a loved one has severe asthma, would you not tire out every option to give them an easier and better quality of life?

If a loved one had a stomach ulcer or needed their gallbladder removed, would you not be supportive of their needs and try to help them in their recovery?

If a loved one suffers from crippling arthritis, would you seek out mobility options, comfort care, and pain relievers; or would you tuck them away in a low grade nursing home and say “that’s too bad”?

Baby Wombat is having a better day today. 🖤🌞

He goes into see our vet on Friday and we’re going to discuss our options for his soft palate and cryptorchid surgeries. I am also going to be scheduling an appointment with neurology at MedVet about the seizures and to make sure the phenobarbital is doing it’s job. 👍🏻

His breathing is my top priority and main concern out of all the health issues, knobby ankles and all.
Poor Wombat prefers cooler surfaces to beds, we currently have one cooling mat for him and added a couple to our wish list to put into the rotation.
He’s not gonna be happy about it, but he’s going on a diet too. Shedding some weight will definitely help his breathing, joints, and overall quality of life. To help entice him into his diet food, we’ve found some stinky sprinkles to top his food with! (We’ve also put a couple of those on the list, too.)

I can’t wait to see the transformation this little one makes. 🫶🏻

Thor, or as I’ve been calling him, Baby Wombat, did well overnight. Snoozed in his kennel and didn’t make a noise except for the snorts.

He’s definitely had a jumbled few days, he’s anxious and confused. He’s been nippy and very protective of his kennel space, and that’s okay. ❤️ I’m sure he’s confused and doesn’t understand that we’re here to be a safe space for him. We’re gonna give him all the time he needs to adjust.

I think part of his attitude may also be coming from discomfort. Look at these crumpled breadstick legs 🥐 Lil man is super stubby and just moseys along to the best of his ability. He’s being hesitant to eat, but that’s expected. However, I think a raised feeder will do him a lot of good.

I would like to add that the Baby Wombat was very loved and cared for before coming to us. His people took him from a breeder who was likely to euthanize because of his (the breeder) mutated doings to Thor. His people spent a lot of time, money, and emotion to get him back into a livable shape. Without hesitation or question they met me in Memphis just a few days after initial contact, only wanting the best they could find for him. They even want to help us with his future vet bills or anything else he needs. Life changes quickly - for anyone. Sometimes for worse and sometimes for the better. Thor’s mom moved up in her life and started a company, and like most business owners, her life got very busy and it became a hassle for her to give Thor the special care he needed, not that she didn’t want to, but she recognized that he could have more of a life with someone who understands his needs. They were in no hurry to rehome him, wanting to find the right fit for him. I would like to believe that we can be that good fit for him. 🖤

Baby Wombat is gonna take time to come around, and we’ll take the time to make sure we’re doing everything right by him.

We are still picking up this little man tomorrow afternoon all the way in Memphis 👀 it’s going to be a scorching hot day for picking up pups, but we’re gonna stay as cool as we can. Charged AC, thin blankets, window tints, and cooling mats on board.

Once we pick up this sweet little barnacle and get him settled in, we may add some items to our wish list specifically for him and his needs. We’re also gonna schedule a vet appointment soon just to have him established with our vet and make sure we’re not missing anything. ❤️

Any small donation toward gas money is a big help and very appreciated, too!

I really don’t know how to say this because I’m still processing it.

Our sweet Aggie girl is gone.
I asked the doctor “let’s say money were no object or consequence, and we did everything we could and did everything right, would she likely still need to be let go?” And she said yes.

Her heart was so enlarged and in such advanced failure that even if we could have prolonged her life, it would not have been a quality of life, and she still could’ve left us any day.

I held her paws, massaged her jowls, and she got quesadillas as her last meal. This house somehow feels empty and she’s taken a piece of me with her.

Any donations received for Aggie today will go towards her cremation and vet bill.

Aggie collapsed about 45 minutes ago. Her gums went ghost white and she peed all over herself. I tossed her in the car and sped to Care Center.
She was breathing ragged and I reached around to hold her paw the entire drive.

She’s stable and in oxygen. There is some free fluid and the doctor is concerned about heart failure. She wants a full work up done, to get cardio involved (obviously), and look into an echo.

Let me be transparent for a minute - a few months back I was made aware that I owed a substantial amount of money to the hospital, mostly due to Jimmy’s hospitalization, and that I should only bring dogs in when in dire need. And while this sucks, I do understand it. I’m sorry to sound like a broken record begging for spare change, but yet here I am.

I am going to be speaking with our payroll department and essentially offer them my entire paycheck. I’ll still get my insurance and they’ll get paid quicker. But we desperately need some help to save our sweet girl. We brought Aggie home March 5th, she deserves to know kindness for eternity, but we’ll settle for at least a few more years.

Donations can be made directly to Aggie at Care Center by calling (513) 530-0911, under my name/account Sydney Perry. They are open 24 hours a day.

Beagle lovers! This is Mabel and Ruby, a senior pair that would ideally stay together, they’ve known each other forever and are each others comfort.

We are looking to find a rescue placement for them, or even a foster if we can’t find another rescue. Located in NKY/Cincinnati area.

Share, tag, comment.

We are open to fosters within 2 hours of Cincinnati, and I will transport them anywhere within 6 hours of Cincy if rescue can be secured.

Higgins is doing great! He’s slowly but surely starting to warm up and show bits of his personality.

This little old fox still needs a dental and neuter, but in the meantime he’s enjoying his wet food and lovins.

He gets along great with the other dogs. The belly band is a precaution since he’s not fixed and was left to roam free before being rescued, so he hasn’t had house training structure in a while, but he is smart and getting the hang of it!

Higgins will be adoptable after his surgeries and he would make a great companion!

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

We get asked a lot how people can help/volunteer. Because we’re run out of our own home and foster homes, it’s a bit of a difficult question since we don’t have a facility. We are always in dire need of laundry doers, whether it be your system or a laundromat. (I’ll give you quarters) Transport help with getting dogs to and from things like the vet back to their foster.

With that said, though, I have a potentially strange volunteer opportunity for about two people.

I would like to bring on two “Guardian Angel” volunteers who would pick up our passed on pups and guide them to the crematory, retrieving them when they are ready to come home, and ushering them back to their respective homes. This would be somewhat of an “on call” position, but you would be alerted ahead of time when any dog in our care starts to decline.

Most of our fosters are within the Cincinnati/Hamilton area, as well as one currently in Dayton.

Higgins and Aggie have just been hanging out and being buds.

Huge thank you to Misfits Pet Spa LLC for removing all of his mats and sprucing him up for the first time in who knows how long. He was strutting when he got back! Higgins continues to be skittish and apprehensive of human touch or getting too close. That’s okay, we’re in no rush and will go at his pace.

I did manage to look at his teeth the other day and there is a fistula that opens clear into his sinuses, much like our little guy Frito. So far it’s only one side of his mouth, but it looks like another could be forming on the other side, or his tooth could possibly be causing issues.

We definitely need to get him into the vet for shots, blood work, and a dental consult.
This little foxy man has a lot of potential even in his old age, he deserves to know love and comfort for the rest of his days. We could really use some help with the vet costs.

The best way is to call our vets office directly to leave a donation for Higgins under A Soft Landing account.

* We’ve worked out a game plan with the foster, but we need an adopter! *

Spider is being returned from foster, and truth be told I really have no place to put her with all of the dogs we just took in. An adopter would be prime, but I would really love to find her another foster home in the meantime.

Spider is SO sweet and loving. She’s energetic and loves to be by your side. She’s the perfect summer dog.

GETS ALONG GREAT WITH EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. She is spayed and UTD on everything. Roughly 3.5 years old, around 35-40lbs.

Spider is fantastic and deserves a forever home, and someone would be so so lucky to have her.

Located in Cincinnati, Oh. Please reach out if you can help, share this post so others can see and network.

Fozzy got breakfast in bed this morning! I don’t think he was too unhappy about it. ☺️

Foster has been doing really well! He already knows where the door to go outside is and he’ll tell us when he needs to go out, he loves all of his beds and toys/we haven’t had any incidents of ripping up, and he loves being out of his room for cuddles or just any human interaction in general. 💕 We’re working on the barking and separation anxiety, but we’ll get there. 💘

It is with unbearable sadness that we share this, but these are true and beautiful words from ARAS founder, Perla Medina-Kinne. We hope to continue on the beautiful work that Perla has started, by dedicating ourselves to help the most in need and vulnerable dogs.

We will always strive to make the remainder of life any dog in our protection has the best, most loved and cared for life that they have ever known. 💖

My parting words...

The first night home with Foster went great. 🥰 he very quickly figured out that he could sleep right next to me, and even lay his head next to mine. Woke up to his lips over top mine and drowning in kisses. 😌❣️We love you too, Foz.

Just like with all of our new kids that we’ve brought home, I have made a bed next to Foster’s and plan to sleep beside him until he feels comfortable and at home. 🏡💓🐶

Annnnd last, but certainly not least, Foster!
Well, what can we say, we just love Fozzy and his big flappy lips so much that we brought him home! Foster was unbelievably the only dog left at ARAS without any idea of a home, and of course we loaded him up and made him apart of our pack! Just like we said we would. 💕

Foster is old, has some rather serious and uncomfortable health concerns, and has lived more than half of his life in an enclosure in hopes of a furever home. Well, now he’s got it. We love him. We are going to do everything for him to help him have the best rest of his life, no matter what! We love you Fozzy Bear.
