Cats are nimble, flexible, and quick due to the 230 bones in their body! Despite having an additional 24 bones to that of humans, who only have 206, the skeleton of a cat is very similar to ours. Cats have 13 ribs while humans have 12, and both have clavicles, but unlike humans, they are unattached to other bones. 04/22/2024

Your dog’s size and energy output determine how much you should feed them. A pup with normal activity levels should receive “maintenance energy” whereas a lap dog requires just about 10% of that. An active pupper who exercises outdoors regularly would likely need an additional 20-40% than your average dog. Adjusting portion sizes is normal as you learn your dog’s ideal maintenance amount. Keep in mind that the weather can play a role in how much your dog should eat. Be sure to consult with us to develop a feeding schedule that is best for your furry family members! Contact us at (732) 381-3700 for more personalized care.

03/21/2024

It is important to know when it is safe for a kitten to leave their mom. If you take them away too early, it will prevent them from receiving the nutrients they need from their mother’s milk and could lead to behavioral complications. 10 weeks is usually the safest timeframe since a mother’s milk will start drying up around 8 weeks, and a few additional weeks will give the kitten enough time to get familiar with being away from their mom. Not sure what is best for your cat? Contact us at (732) 381-3700 to set up a health plan purr-fectly tailored to their needs!

Did you know that you can actually help us to treat your pet’s heart disease by counting their breathing rate at home? Watch out for other clues as well such as coughing, weakness, labored breathing, weight loss, decreased appetite, restlessness, and agitation during sleep amongst others. Generally, normal dogs and cats have a breathing rate of 15-30 breaths every minute when at rest. Resting breathing rates consistently greater than 30 per minute are considered abnormal and should be reported to us. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, contact us at (732) 381-3700 so we can investigate further.
