Please read to see if you can help!!
NOTICE: The shelter has had an exposure to parvovirus from unvaccinated pets that have entered our facility. Due to this exposure we have closed off some areas of the facility to the general public. This abundance of precaution is to protect our current shelter population.
Since we are unaware of the vaccination status of animals entering our facility, this exposure was a result of a pet(s) that most likely were not vaccinated and exposed to this virus in the community. This is why it is extremely important for this community to understand why your pets MUST be vaccinated annually against these diseases. It not only affects your pet(s), but it now is affecting our shelter.
We are doing everything within our power to ensure the current population remains healthy at the shelter. We have extreme cleaning protocols in place and are taking extra steps to protect these animals.
However, we do need your help. We still have an influx of pets entering the shelter both as strays and owner surrenders, that have already been scheduled. Many of these pets are puppies that have weaker immune systems, most likely unvaccinated, and have a higher rate of being susceptible to the parvo virus.
How can you help? We currently need people who are willing and able to foster puppies under the age of 6 months. Fosters will need to be flexible and able to foster on short notice for those intakes that will be entering through the shelter. Please visit our website https://mcgtn.org/animal-control/foster to complete a Foster Application online. Those applications will then be reviewed by our staff and approved fosters will be contacted with further instructions and information.
As a note, if you do wish to foster, you MUST be able to bring back the foster animal to the shelter on set dates for weight checks and booster vaccines.
If you are not able to foster but still wish to help in some way we can really use blankets, towels, rags, disposable non-latex gloves, surgical boot covers, and surgical gowns. As always we also accept food donations, treats, toys, bleach, dawn dish soap, liquid laundry detergent, and other supplies.
Foster applications may be completed at https://mcgtn.org/animal-control/foster
