Fall 2018: The Clayton Dog Park is closed for construction. Stay tuned--we'll be back wagging our tails before you know it...

News from the Clayton Parks & Recreation Department:

Last week we met with the Contractors who are building the MSD Deer Creek Tunnel and have been informed of their timeline. You may already know that work began on this project in late 2017. The contractors will begin construction in Anderson Park in November 2018 and anticipate completion by February 2021. This will result in the closure of the park from November 2018 through February 2021 for a total of 28 months.

As a result, we will be selling memberships that will be effective from April 1 through October 31 this year. These will be offered at a 50% discount due to the shortened season.

While I realize the Dog Park has been a wonderful park amenity for you and your dogs, and will be sorely missed during the construction, the good news is that upon its completion we will have a newly built dog park. During construction please consider joining one of the surrounding dog parks (Brentwood, Creve Coeur, Maplewood and University City); all have indicated they have the capacity to take some of our members during the closure.

New Entrance Gate

We are also in the process of replacing the Entrance Gate at the Dog Park. We are installing a gate that will utilize a key fob for entry. Each of you will need to get one of the new fobs once they are available. While this will help control entry, it will not address issues related to someone who opens the gate and lets others come in with them. Again, we ask that, in order to ensure that the Clayton Dog Park facility remains safe and secure for its members no one is allowed entry without their own key fob. This is a precaution intended to maintain the integrity of a membership-only park, where member dogs are medically pre-approved for the health and safety of all park users.

2018 Season Memberships

Memberships for the 2018 season will go on sale once we receive the key fobs for the new gate. Current dog park members will be contacted via email when sales are available. Look for an email around April 1st with details. Until the new gate is installed and key fobs are ready for distribution, your current membership will remain active.

News from the City of Clayton:

Based on member feedback, staff has been hard at work planning and implementing improvements to the dog park this year. Members may have also noticed the removal of the two sweet gum trees as well as the new bone shaped splash pool area. This summer, a large portion of the large dog area will be surfaced with decomposed granite to help with the mud issues. Dog parks across the country have turned to decomposed granite because it can withstand wear and tear and manage pet waste while keeping a manicured look. During the resurfacing, a tunnel will also be added to the large dog area. Exact dates and closure information will be sent to members when it becomes available. These updates have been funded through donations to the Clayton Century Foundation.

News today from the City of Clayton:
Clayton Dog Park Status Update

As you know, the Dog Park land was acquired through a FEMA/MSD buyout due to flood issues for the previous residents. To mitigate the issues, we have completed several storm water management projects including a retention pond on the north side of the park. Despite our best efforts, the unusually wet spring has continued to push back construction of the new Dog Park.

Due to weather delays and the upcoming holiday, construction on the Dog Park will resume on July 8. The opening will be moved to July 29, weather permitting.

All Dog Park members will be issued a credit due to the postponement. The final amount of the credit will be calculated once the Dog Park is open and will be based on the exact number of days delayed.

While we are disappointed by the continued delay, we appreciate your ongoing patience and dedication to the new Dog Park. We will continue to keep dog park members updated on the construction and opening festivities as information becomes available.

News from the City of Clayton: The opening of the new Dog Park will be delayed due to the extremely rainy weather over the last several weeks. Need a week or so for the area to dry out, so that the contractor can set the fence posts in concrete. Once the construction gets started, they do anticipate moving along fairly quickly (weather permitting, of course). At this time, the City is hoping to open the park in mid-June. Stay tuned for more.
