CANINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAK:

Within the last few days, several veterinary clinics and kennels have confirmed the presence of a highly contagious canine influenza that is new to northeastern Oklahoma and the surrounding areas. There is a vaccine available for canine influenza, but it is not routinely given to pets in areas that have historically low incidence of the virus. Most of the dogs in our practice have not been vaccinated for canine influenza.

Unvaccinated dogs can become infected with the virus if they come in contact with other infected dogs. Most dogs will show mild to moderate symptoms, similar to those experienced by humans with the flu (coughing, sneezing, lethargy, fever, eye and nasal discharge). However, a significant portion of these dogs will require medication and some will require hospitalization. Canine influenza has been known to cause death in 1 -2% of dogs that are infected.

We recommend keeping your pets at home and away from other dogs at this time in order to prevent transmission of the disease. However, if upcoming holiday plans include traveling with your pets or boarding, we recommend getting your pets vaccinated as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, like nearly everything else right now, the canine influenza vaccine is in short supply. Veterinary orders are evaluated and allocated each week. If you would like to protect your dog from canine influenza by vaccination, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can justify our vaccine orders and have the best chance of accommodating our patients’ needs. We do have a few vaccines on-hand which will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call our clinic at (918)782-9552 if you have any questions or if you wish to reserve vaccines for your pets.

Thank you so much. We look forward to partnering with you to keep our pets safe and healthy into the new year!

Please do everything you can to protect your pets from heat stroke!

Short-nosed dogs, long-haired dogs, and young pets are especially susceptible.

Rock-star veterinary technician needed for a busy one-doctor practice minutes away from beautiful Grand Lake in northeastern Oklahoma. We need someone who is confident and competent in all surgical and medical areas, but also loves to communicate with clients and works well as a team member. This individual would need to be comfortable in a fast-paced environment and be dedicated to providing excellent veterinary care and client services. The ideal candidate must be responsible, super-organized, friendly, outgoing, have excellent attention to detail...and yet likes to have fun and enjoy working with other team members! This is a full-time position, working four 10-hour days during the week and rotating Saturday mornings. We offer very competitive pay, paid time off, and generous pet-care discounts. Other benefits are negotiable. We would prefer a licensed veterinary technician, but would also consider somebody with extensive on-the-job training and experience.

Are you a student who wants a flexible summer job? Or an adult who has some evenings and weekends available?

We are looking for a self-motivated individual to care for our boarding and hospitalized pets, in addition to cleaning and sanitizing our clinic. The best candidate would have knowledge of basic animal care and handling and a desire to learn about the veterinary field. We are willing to cross-train the right individual in basic veterinary assisting and reception duties as well.

If you would like more information about this position, please send inquiries and resumes to [email protected]. (Please, no phone calls as our phones are already super busy!)

*This position does require evenings/weekends/rotating holidays.

Please text or leave a voicemail to 208-660-6106 and he will return your call. For non-emergency issues, feel free to text the clinic number at 918-782-9552.

This is just awful. Distemper is a terrible life-threatening illness that is very contagious, especially when dogs are in close quarters. It is one of the vaccines that are always required by boarding and training kennels, etc.

This is a good reminder to make sure that your dogs are up-to-date on their distemper vaccines. If you have any questions, please call us 🙂

City of Tulsa Animal Welfare will be closing indefinitely to stop the spread of canine distemper virus (CDV) after several recent cases were confirmed.

Did someone say National Cat Day??

Tink says that everyday is Cat Day when she’s around 😂, but she would like to recognize all her other feline friends on their special day.

Post a picture of your favorite feline in the comments. (Tink might just get around to looking at them after her sixth nap of the day…..)

We need to normalize the grief experienced after the loss of a pet.

(Tissue alert….)

When my yellow Lab died last spring, I was flattened by an overwhelming sadness that’s with me still. And that’s normal, experts say, because losing a pet is often one of the hardest yet least acknowledged traumas we’ll ever face.
