Today Caesar did his first ever splash card and achieved the first leg of his Senior Title, jumping 15’3”! This is also only his second time jumping from an actual diving dock. We are very proud of the Big Man!

Nahla and Koda are finishing up their time with us. When we are working with multi-dog households, we make sure that each dog can listen and focus in the presence of the other dogs, even if the other dogs are not being required to listen.

Abbey is doing amazing work becoming neutral in every environment. When she first came to us, she would pull her handler into the street to avoid getting close to this Buffalo hide. It has become a “non-issue” for her!

Hans is preparing for his new life as a Service/physical assistance/protection dog. There are not many dogs who can do it all at a high level, but Hans is the man for the job. Today we took him to his future home to practice his obedience skills and get him comfortable. Just a few more weeks until he starts this new exciting journey!

We have some exciting news!!!

Heart Mountain K9 will officially be opening a resort and offering boarding and daycare services starting February 1, 2024. This will be a high-end, chain link free, boarding experience with play groups run by professional trainers. Our focus is creating a stress-free environment for our clients to board their dogs, and offering personalization options to keep our canine guests comfortable and fulfilled!

We look forward to all of the people and pups this expansion will allow us to connect with. we are currently accepting bookings for 2024! Give us a call to learn more about these services and to reserve a spot for your pup.

Abbey, the German Sherpherd Dog, has struggled with insecurity for her whole life. She is here with us to build confidence and a positive world view. She will be working to care less about the world around her and gain some pretty awesome obedience skills in the process!

I want to take a moment and give a shout out to Leslie and her girl Bean for going above and beyond in our summer basic obedience class. Our lovely girl, Cricket, socializing at beck lake today.

Socializing does not mean allowing your dog to play and mingle with other people or dogs. Socializing is all about desensitizing your dog to various environments. We always focus on teaching dogs to focus on their handlers through the distracting stimuli in the surrounding environment.

You may be inadvertently creating a more distracted dog through improper socialization. Make sure that your dog is getting more enjoyment from you when they are outside than they are getting from the environment! We could never stress the importance of having engagement with your dog enough… Focus on Engagement!!

Shonie, the baby Karelian Bear Dog, will be staying with us for a month to build a solid foundation in obedience and be properly socialized. This training will prepare her for a long career working for her mom in the Wyoming mountains. We are thoroughly enjoying our time with her and we are happy to be a small part of her adventurous future!

If your dog is not focused on you, if he is not engaged with you, then you will have an uphill battle trying to get any obedience. Work on getting engagement from your dog first, and then build obedience skills!

Earl is working on building focus around his toughest distraction. He is leaving the reactivity behind and absolutely killing it!!

Preparing your dog to exceed!

Erwin began his training journey with another trainer. After 5 months of training, Erwin was highly reactive and couldn’t be a field away from another dog without manifesting aggression. That trainer “fired” him from the program. This is what 5 weeks of clear communication looks like on a dog with reactivity that couldn’t be fixed!!! What a fantastic dog he is.

I have absolutely enjoyed my time with Disco! What a lovely lady. The work we put in together has given her the knowledge and understanding to operate more effectively in her future adventures with her family. I am honored to be a part of her journey.

Most dogs will never need to learn the skill of free-shaping. Pet training usually involves teaches the dog to respond to the handlers cues. However, responding to cues to earn rewards has become boring for Erwin and his owners have been struggling with keeping him engaged as Erwin seeks mental fullfillment on his own. He was starting to become complacent during training, not focusing or responding everytime. I decided that teaching Erwin the game of Free-Shaping is our best way to provide him with the mental stimulation he needs. During free-shaping, the dog has to be very thoughtful and proactive. They learn that actively trying is what earns them rewards, not actively waiting to be told. Erwin has not quite gotten the hang of the idea yet but he has come a long way! You will see him have periods of waiting, periods of frustration, and then you will see his brain turn back on and the excitement and success he feels when he is correct! This game will be utilized even after his training with us is over, providing him with lifelong fulfillment and giving his owners a proactive dog!

Earl is starting to learn about duration during his day-training program. We teach all position commands without the use of the word “stay”. This prevents our commands from becoming conditional!

Cerberus, puppy training

👏👏👏👏 What a difference two weeks can make! Cerberus has gone from pulling and ignoring leash pressure to giving freely to pressure and responding to a heel command. What a good boy! If you struggle with your dog pulling on leash or if you have given up trying to take your dog out due to their behavior, we can help!!
