Response to the potentially fatal respiratory illness in dogs that has been reported in several states across the country. Our office is doing everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of pets in our area. As many have heard, there has been a spread of a potentially fatal respiratory illness. This illness has been gaining more attention in the news and has grown from the beginning of the year.
Although information is limited currently and there is no known widespread testing or guaranteed prevention, our office has agreed to follow the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) recommendations. These recommendations state that dogs should be vaccinated against kennel cough as well as canine influenza.
Our recommendation would be to avoid exposure when possible. Most of our exposure occurs at places like large kenneling facilities. The best prevention we can provide would be to avoid kenneling facilities, groomers, dog parks, and places where your dog may encounter other dogs.
We would strongly advise that all our dogs be vaccinated against canine influenza (dog flu vaccine) and kennel cough (Bordetella vaccine). There is not enough information to know if this will prevent this virus or decrease the symptoms, however, at this time it is the best possible prevention we have available.
With all the information outlined above, Alpine Animal Hospital will still offer limited kenneling for our patients. We have several protocols in place to keep exposure down including an advanced air filtration system, cleaning solutions, sectioned kenneling areas, and no nose-to-nose exposure to other patients in the office.
We will require that going forward all animals kenneling with our office be current on all vaccines. This includes canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza virus, canine parvovirus, rabies, Bordetella, and influenza.
Please call our office to schedule a time to have your pets’ vaccines updated. Our office can be reached at (208) 664-2168.
