CC: "We want to give a big welcome to Sadie. Sadie is a 7 month old lab. And she is staying with us for our 4 week Board and Train program. Over the next 4 weeks we will be working on solidifying her basics, which includes sit, down, place, and the implied stay. Along with door work, lead work focus work she will also be addressing her dog on dog manners and her impulse control while she is here with us. We took a field trip downtown with 2 of our 6 week Board and Train dogs Sophie and King. Both are in for people reactivity and Sophie also has some dog reactivity. These field trips are a great way to push the dogs out of their comfort zone and gauge where they are with all the work that has gone on at the facility. Welcome to another installment of our Beat the Heat Safety Series! Todays topic: PARKED CARS CC: "Something you should never, ever, ever do on a hot day like this is leave your dog in a hot car. Right now its about 97* 98* outside but in the car its probably about 120* - 130*. I'm already having a hard time sitting in here and it's only been a few seconds. The door is open. I can't even imagine what this would be like for a dog with the car door closed and the windows up. So. Not only is it uncomfortable to leave your dog in a hot car it can also be very dangerous. Some dogs can experience irreversible organ damage or even death when left in a hot car. It is also incredibly illegal to leave your dog in a hot car in the state of Idaho and in the state of Washington. Todays topic: Water and Shade and LOTS of it CC: "Something that you should always do when your dog is outside is to make sure they have adequate water to drink. For example, we have two pools right here as well as a sprinkler that the dogs can play with as well. Something to also keep in mind is to make sure you have adequate amounts of shade for your dog. For example, a canopy like this or a nice shady tree like we have back here. You never want to just give your dog something like a dog house or a shed because actually those are to insulate heat and actually make your dog a lot hotter. So definitely make sure you have open areas for your dog to lie down in the shade. New to the Crew! Gibbs is joining us for our 8 week board and train program. During the next 8 weeks we will be working with Gibbs on his fear aggression towards people. Having bit a number of people already, including Darcey, building the trust account with Gibbs will be our main goal before moving onto anything else. CC: "Finn and Laylas owner came to us with the concern that she wasn't able to walk Finn and Layla at the same time or on the same side with out them instigating any reactivity from each other or not necessarily fighting, but arguing over who got to walk next to mom or go through the door first. As you can see here, we have been working closely with Finn and Layla on walking on the same side of the handler with a split lead while being nice, calm, cool, and collected and being respectful of each others boundaries and not causing any problems. They are doing wonderfully and have improved so much. Today one of trainers helped Hercules on his place! He is doing so well and is able to stay in place while our trainer gets up and walks around! This is an important step in place training, as taking small steps further from your dog encourages them to stay placed while you are doing other things! Place is good for when there are visitors coming over to the house, you are enjoying a meal, or cooking, and when your dog might be getting a little over excited!
