☀️🦟🪱 How do you know if your dog has heartworms? Understandably, this is a question that most dog parents worry about. In its early stages, when the microfilariae are migrating through the body, this disease may be difficult to detect. However, later in the disease, when the adult worms are invading the heart and lungs, dog parents may notice symptoms such as:

Mild or persistent coughing
Shortness of breath
Nosebleeds
Tiring easily during exercise
Lethargy
Fainting spells
Decrease in appetite leading to weight loss
If a large number of heartworms develop in the same blood vessel, they can block the blood flow and cause Caval Syndrome (also called Vena Cava Syndrome). This is a life-threatening situation that can be marked by severe difficulty in breathing and collapse. Caval Syndrome requires immediate emergency medical and surgical intervention to try and remove the blockage.

Heartworm Disease is a complex and life-threatening health issue, especially as it progresses. Remember that we are talking about parasites that are up to a foot long, causing severe damage to the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

06/03/2024

Check out this microfilaria under the microscope we saw today, unfortunately this kiddo was heartworm positive.

🦟❤️🪱From teacup-sized Terriers to large Labrador Retrievers, dogs of any age or breed can contract heartworms from the bite of a mosquito carrying microfilariae.🦟❤️🪱

Breeds with very heavy coats are also susceptible to this disease. Dogs who are older or have existing medical conditions, such as heart or respiratory problems, may be more severely damaged by this parasite.

Cases of heartworms have been found in every state across the country. Areas with hot and humid climates, such as the Ohio and Mississippi river basins and the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, are especially endemic. That’s because they are good breeding grounds for the mosquitos that transmit the disease.

While all dogs are susceptible to Heartworm Disease, the greatest risk for transmission in dogs is during mosquito season, even for dogs that live primarily indoors. Besides protecting your pup from mosquitos, learn some additional ways to keep your pal safe while they are outdoors.

☀️🦟It’s Heartworm season. ❤️🪱
As the name suggests, heartworms are worms that live in the heart and lungs of their hosts. Dogs are the most common hosts for these worms, but other mammals (such as felines, ferrets, and wild canids) have contracted these parasites. Humans are not a natural host for heartworms, so you don’t have to worry about contracting them.

Heartworms are not directly contagious to other dogs since the parasites transmit through mosquito bites. Here’s how it works:

A mosquito bites an infected animal and picks up microscopic heartworm larvae, called microfilariae. When this mosquito bites another animal, it passes the microfilariae into the bloodstream of the new host.

The microfilariae then migrate through the bloodstream toward the host’s heart and lungs. It can take up to six months for the microfilariae to reach these organs, so detecting this disease early in the course of the infestation is challenging.

Once in the heart and lungs, the microfilariae mature into adult heartworms and can grow to over a foot in length.

Call the clinic today to get your pup in for their yearly Heartworm test and pick up preventative. ☀️🦟😄

🐶🐱🌎Happy World Veterinary Day! 🌎🐱🐶

Today we celebrate the veterinary field as essential health work. It is a Veterinarians job to not only protect the wellbeing and health of their patients, but their owners and the community too. All graduated veterinarians have unergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible, for promoting public health and food safety and security.

Special love to our Doctors here at ABAC, Dr. Dorsett and Dr. Benn. Thank you for all you do!!

Hello Austin Bluffs Family,
Some of you may have noticed someone very dear to us has been missing. Our sweet house cat, Shivers. In late November we had to isolate him because he was fighting an infection. He recovered at the beginning of March, and then not even two weeks later he was sick again. After noticing his food and water were being touched less, we did a physical exam and found a large abdominal tumor. Our boy was hurting, and with his best interest in mind, we helped him cross the rainbow bridge. 🌈
We know you all loved him just as deeply as we did, and we will all feel his loss.

RIP, Shivers the Menace 2005-2024

Dear Austin Bluffs Family,
It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from active practice. My last day will be March 26th. It has been an honor and a great pleasure to have served you and your pets over the last 34 years, and it is not easy for me to give it up.
This practice started modestly in 1990 when I purchased it from Dr. Barton after working for him for a year. The fact that it grew to the practice it is today is amazing to me. I cannot adequately express how blessed I have been to have taken this journey with all of you. I thank you for trusting me with the care of your family members.

Over the years I’ve gotten to know many of you. We’ve shared a lot of stories and have enjoyed some wonderful conversations. Thank you for your warmth and kindness. It has enriched my life and I have many fond memories. I treasure our friendship.
I’ve also had the pleasure of working alongside other dedicated veterinarians and support staff members. Their assistance to me has been invaluable and I’m confident that they will continue to provide excellent care for your pets. Many of you have come to know and depend on Dr. Dorsett and Dr. Benn. They will continue to work with you as full-time doctors at Austin Bluffs.

While I will miss serving as your Veterinarian, it has given me the opportunity to grow as a person and I hope to continue to serve in other capacities as needed. I look forward to spending more time with my wife and family and pursuing other passions.

I have valued our relationship greatly. Thank you for your loyalty and friendship over the years.

Best wishes for your future health.

Sincerely,

Dr. Monyek.

01/15/2024

❄️ Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, please heed the following advice from our experts:❄️✨

❄️Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, paying special attention to his feet and in-between the toes. Remove any snow balls from between his foot pads.
❄️Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is long-haired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals and de-icing chemicals that can dry his skin, and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.
❄️Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals—and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.
Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse.
❄️Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible.
Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
❄️Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide much-needed calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her well-hydrated and her skin less dry.
Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.
❄️Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

An update for our clients about the unknown respiratory virus and an update on our protocols and procedures.

At this time, there is still very little that is known about it. The recommendations for prevention are still the same and are as follows

- Make sure your pup is current on the Bordetella and K9 Influenza vaccines

- Avoid boarding and grooming facilities

- Avoid dog parks or dog friendly spaces

We are taking all the recommended and necessary precautions to protect your healthy pets, while still treating your sick ones.

We are not allowing dogs into the building, that are presenting any symptoms, until we have direct access to a room for them.

We are sanitizing our lobby, scale, and the entire room with specialized cleaner after a contagious pet comes into contact with them.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (719)598-7879
