It feels like just yesterday, back in October 2012, when we were glued to our televisions, watching in disbelief as Superstorm Sandy swept over the East Coast, leaving behind devastation across our home state of New Jersey. As 10-year-olds, we felt powerless—what could we possibly do to help our neighbors, especially those out of reach? But one thing weighed heavily on our minds: what was happening to the displaced and abandoned pets left behind, or to those who couldn’t be fed?
That was how the Do It Duo for Pets, Inc. was born. Over the years, we’ve donated thousands of pounds of pet food and supplies—over 5,000 lbs of dry dog food, 2,200 lbs of dry cat food, hundreds of collars, leashes, beds, and even funded free microchipping and vaccination clinics. We’ve helped during Hurricane Harvey, the tornadoes in Oklahoma, and numerous other disasters. And although weather can make a huge impact, we know that when we work together, we can make an even bigger one.
Now, in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we’re reviving our mission. Though Lucy still resides in New Jersey and Alex has since moved to Virginia Beach, her family still lives in North Carolina, putting us even closer to those impacted by these storms. We still believe no pet should be forgotten, and we’re ready to help once again.
We have decided on highlighting three organizations that are making an impact in the areas affected by the hurricanes. Our distance from each other makes it difficult to directly collect donations, but we encourage you to donate to these organizations!

In partnership with Southwest Airlines® and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Greater Good Charities is operating an emergency airlift to relocate over 145 shelter pets from the Southeast to the Midwest. This effort will free up shelter space for newly displaced pets affected by Hurricane Helene, giving them a chance to be reunited with their families.
Brother Wolf Animal Rescue | https://www.bwar.org/
Brother Wolf has lost its shelter and transport vans due to Hurricane Helene, leaving their facility in ruins. Despite this devastation, they remain committed to rebuilding in Asheville and continuing their life-saving work. They need support now more than ever to help the animals and people in their community recover from this catastrophic setback.
Haywood Christian Ministry | https://hcmnc.org/helene-flood-2024
HCM is prioritizing food access for communities affected by the floods caused by Hurricane Helene. They are working with local farms and community organizations to ensure food reaches those in need, while also helping farms recover from the disaster. Their long-term focus is on building a resilient and sustainable rural food system.
Big or Small, We Help Them All—whether it’s the animals we support or the communities we serve. No matter where or when disaster strikes, we’re ready to do our part.
