With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
If the pavement is too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Make sure to be aware of the dangers hot pavement can have on your pet's paws.
Tornadoes form during intense thunderstorms and can reach wind speeds of 200+ mph. Although tornadoes can occur anywhere, they are prevalent in the Southeast and Midwest. Stay informed by downloading the FEMA app and signing up for weather reports and evacuation notices.

We would like to let everyone know that we have seen a recent increase in Rabies cases in wildlife in our area. We have had two racoons brought to our facility recently that had porcupine quills that both tested positive. If you find injured wildlife the best course of action would be to contact fish and game or your local animal control officer for assistance or guidance on how to safely proceed.

The CAVES team could not have done anything better. The degree of compassion and professionalism was unmatched. Everyone - from the reception staff to the technicians and nurses and doctors - they were all incredible. Dr Butterworth even called me on her day off, at her choosing, just to check in. I am so grateful for them all.VCA Russell Animal Hospital

This patient is dealing with a few separate issues and is newly diagnosed with mega esophagus. Which means that the esophagus is enlarged and doesn’t function properly, so she needs to stay upright after eating to make sure everything goes down to the stomach. There is a type of chair that was invented specifically for pets with mega esophagus called the Bailey chair. It’s designed to make the pet sit in an upright position while they eat. It takes some training, but works so well and makes for a great quality of life at home! #vca #vcacaves #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #marspethealth #nhveterinarian #animalhospital #emergencyveterinarycare#specialtyanimalhospital #vcaanimalhospital #weloveourpatients #megaesophagus #baileychair #bernesemountaindog #happydog
This handsome fellow presented to our Emergency Department after ingesting a large amount of ribbon. Thankfully, the owner was able to act quickly and bring him in! We performed an endoscopic procedure and were able to remove the long and thick ribbon! Oh and it was rainbow colored, someone needs to tell him that’s not how you taste the rainbow. He recovered well and was very eager to give all the snuggles to our team! #vca #vcacaves #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #marspethealth #nhveterinarian #animalhospital #emergencyveterinarycare#specialtyanimalhospital #vcaanimalhospital #weloveourpatients #endoscopy #rainbowribbon #mainecoon #emergencyvet #tastetherainbow🌈
Patients with porcupine quills are a very common occurrence. Typically they are not an urgent case, but this patient here had quills in his chest. Porcupine quills can become very dangerous because they migrate through the body before making their way out. NEVER cut the ends off as it makes it a much more invasive procedure to try and remove them. Thankfully, the quills themselves are non-toxic if some end up remaining under the skin. We cannot guarantee the full removal of every quill despite our greatest efforts. This is a 100% preventable circumstance. Sometimes porcupine quills can be a life long battle for your pet if it is bad enough. Please keep your dog on a leash and if you have a fenced in yard, check the area before letting your dog out. Porcupines can climb fences! Spring time is mating season and rainy days bring out more porcupines. They have no natural predators so they are not afraid of humans or pets. They cannot shoot quills out. They are mostly active at night, but definitely still come out during the day. We are always here to help remove quills from your pet! #vca #vcacaves #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #marspethealth #nhveterinarian #animalhospital #emergencyveterinarycare#specialtyanimalhospital #vcaanimalhospital #weloveourpatients #porcupinequills #quills #quillremoval
Have you ever wondered how our triage process works? Coming into our emergency room brings a lot of anxiety for pets and owners. Our triage process is meant to help alleviate some of those high emotions by quickly assessing the stability of the patient. Our hospital has a high volume of patients every day, so to ensure the best care possible we have a triage process in place! This is how it works for CAVES👆🏻🐾🩺 #vca #vcacaves #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #marspethealth #nhveterinarian #animalhospital #emergencyveterinarycare #vcaanimalhospital #specialtyanimalhospital #weloveourpatients #triage #newhampshirevetmed #vetmednewengland #emergencytriage
This cute girl presented through our emergency service after biting into an albuterol inhaler. Once they puncture the canister, they get an overdose of albuterol which can cause tachycardia (elevated heart rate), tachypnea (elevated respiratory rate), hypertension (elevated blood pressure) and tremors, agitation or seizures. It’s important to bring your pet in to a veterinarian if you notice this event happen or notice any abnormal symptoms. This pet here did great with treatment and went home a few days later feeling better! She loved treats, even if she wasn’t the best catcher. #vca #vcacaves #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #marspethealth #nhveterinarian #animalhospital #emergencyveterinarycare #vcaanimalhospital #specialtyanimalhospital #weloveourpatients #inhalertoxicity #newhampshirevet #newenglandvet
