Over the last few weeks we have seen an increase in leptospirosis cases we are treating. Here is some helpful information about lepto. Lepto is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed from animal to human. AAHA has updated their vaccine guidelines to include lepto as a CORE vaccine rather than being considered elective. Contact your primary veterinarian if you have questions regarding if your dog is currently vaccinated or if you would like to schedule the vaccine.

VCA CAVES was happy to help last Friday with educating our local EMS and Fire crews to an introduction to basic education in Emergency Care and BLS for the K9. This presentation was put together by our Clinical Educator Hailey who holds her CVT and RN and was happy to help bridge the gap with both her passions for helping people and animals. She was happily accompanied by the Technician Supervisor and Leads of our Emergency and Critical Care department Christine, Alexis, Renee and Maddy. Nicely Done team!

Canine influenza, or “dog flu,” is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can be passed from dog to dog. It typically starts with a cough and can be mistaken for the more common and well-known Bordetella. In some cases, canine influenza can progress to pneumonia.

Our hospital is participating in the ACVO National Service Animal Eye Exam event this month. This event provides complimentary screening eye exams to Service animals across the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico and the UK. Here our Ophthalmologist Dr. Buechner is preforming ans exam on sweet Esprit.

We would like to let everyone know that we have seen a recent increase in Rabies cases in wildlife in our area. We have had two racoons brought to our facility recently that had porcupine quills that both tested positive. If you find injured wildlife the best course of action would be to contact fish and game or your local animal control officer for assistance or guidance on how to safely proceed.
