If your farrier has shod your horse to go rock crushing and brush popping then this doesn’t apply to you. If your farrier has shod your upper level horse for performance then “turnout” is something that must be considered but not taken lightly. If your horse has any type of corrective measures being applied then turnout might not be possible.

Let me break this down. If I’m shoeing your 14.3 quarter horse with lite rim shoes and a toe clip and the horse has pretty darn good feet I’m not really worried about your horse going out in the pasture or turnout. I’ve fit him tight… he’s on a good schedule. I’m pretty sure we’re ok. If I’m shoeing your 14.3 hands quarter horse and he’s got sliders on the back well that changes that entire situation . He’s fit for a certain job and it wasn’t turnout. Can he be turned out? Of course but considerations must be made .

If I’m shoeing your 4th level Ferrari and due to its needs i have him in wide webs, length behind, etc etc that horse is absolutely not shod for turnout. I can shoe him for turnout if you want but you won’t be happy with his performance /soundness at test. Or i can shoe him for test and you won’t be able to turn him out (without considerations).

I’m absolutely not saying don’t turn out your horse. I believe they need it and are healthier for it. I am saying that how and when they are turned out can absolutely positively impact their overall success .

Race cars have race tires… mud trucks have mud tires …. Etc etc. if you have a Ferrari as a horse and it’s shod to be a Ferrari then it needn’t and shouldn’t be hanging out in a mud hole.

Lastly it’s abscess season… pick your horses feet daily. And not that it has anything to do with abscesses but don’t let your horses get fat on this spring grass, or worse , founder on it.
